Bhanja dynasty originally came from Mayur Bhanja in sea route at about 13century . At that time Bhitara Kanika was a dense forest and known as Panchamuka . Bhuja Bal Bhanja stayed in the jungle area and has declared himself ruler . At that time Chhamuka which is present Kanika was ruled by a oil men (Teli) family . Bhanja dynasty of Righa Garah started acquiring one by one village Rajkanika ( that time it was known as Chhamuka)side starting from Bajarapur . At that time those oilmen community had found a girl child in a wooden box floated in the river with royal dresses in side that box . They took her to their house . After some years this news has been intimated to the Bhanja ruler and ultimately one of the Bhanja ruler recovered that girl from the oilmen family and had married her . Her name was given as Kanika by which name the Killa Kanika came to exit . That girl was originally born in the Kujanga sandha ruler and her mother had floated her in the river to escape evil eyes of Maratha rulers . There was not a single revenue village named as Kanika or Raj Kanika in the entire estate . Before Kanika it was called as Panchamuka - Kerada sashana and the western side was known as chhamuka .
