I have had encounters with people who would regularly get drunk, but then apologize for whatever bad behavior they did. Saying "I'm not a bad person, I was drunk." Many people say "I forgive you", and then keep getting abused (by whatever the drunks are apologizing for). I tell them, "Clearly you have a problem with drinking, so if you are really sorry, get into a program, or simply stop drinking.", only one person has. Apparently, he was truly sorry, and wanted to make a change. I am so proud of him. The rest? I get them out of my life as quickly as possible. I have had people say "You are too judgemental!" I smile, and put on my best drunk face and say "Sorry... I was drunk. *HIC* Enable me."

In case anyone was wondering, he had to be taken to the hospital for medical clearance because of his high BAC. He was a .302, which is EXTREMELY high for the average person. It also shows you how much and how often he drinks, that he can function at this level with a .302 BAC. That’s a tolerance built up by years of heavy drinking. The average person who isn’t a big drinker would be in a snoring coma at that level. Just for reference, a BAC level of .400 is generally considered fatal for most people.

These OWI consequences in Wisconsin and other northern states completely blow my mind. I live in Texas and getting just ONE will completely upend your entire life for many, many years. By the time you’re done with court, fines, and legal costs it’ll cost you between $10k-$15k. Then it stays on your record forever, just like if you had committed a heinous felony such as murder. In Texas all you have to do to get a DUI is be sitting in the drivers seat with the keys in the ignition. The car doesn’t even have to be running and you can be in a parking lot. The law states that that shows “intent to drive” and that’s all they need to convict you. The fact that Wisconsin treats your first OWI as a traffic infraction instead of a criminal charge literally blows my mind.

"I'm not a bad person...." Yeah, this is the equivalent of drunkenly waving around a loaded weapon while walking down the street with your finger on the trigger. I had a friend when I was a kid, he was riding down the side of road on his bike when a drunk driver smashed into the back of him, throwing him 20 feet and ripping half his skull off. Funny thing is that this drunk driver had 5 D.U.I's and had his license taken away. Magically the state seemed to think this would dissuade a POS from continuing to drive let alone drive drunk. Theses people need prison time, not a fine, AA meetings, and a license taken away. These people are literally a danger to society driving around in a 2000+ pound machine. By the 3rd D.U.I., if that person is not spending 5 years in prison, then the judge is doing something wrong.

I have lost many loved ones myself…all of my grandparents, both parents, a brother, two sisters, and a nephew, so I know loss myself. My father died back in 1986, when I was only 21, and I still grieve for him to this day! This Christmas will be VERY difficult for you, so my only suggestion would be is to surround yourself with those loved ones (and friends) that you still have, and LOVE ON THEM. Let them know you love and appreciate them for who they are, and what they mean to you. Expensive gifts don’t mean much…it’s special memories and TIME SPENT that mean the MOST to people! Anyway…I am so, so sorry for your loss, and wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, and a Merry Christmas my sad friend. Just remember that JESUS LOVES YOU, and is ALWAYS there for you!
