Coming up, an interview with a true 80s icon, Huey Lewis and the News on one of the biggest songs of the 80s. The Power of Love from the 1985 blockbuster Back to the Future. He was in the midst of a huge album in Sports that had 4 big hits Heart and Soul, The Heart of Rock and Roll, I Want a New Drug and This is It. Then he got invited to sit down with the biggest director in film history, Steven Spielberg, who wanted Huey to write a song for his new movie because as he explained… the main character Marty McFly would be a fan of his band… Huey had never written for film before and was hesitant… He told Robert Zemeckis and Spielberg he didn’t want to write a song with the same name as the movie. The director said fine just send me the next thing you write… He did just that and it became a #1 smash… Only problem is the filmmakers didn’t capitalize on it and they missed a window to have a big soundtrack album…up next is the story of how this singer gave 10% of the song’s royalties to an old friend for coming up with the title of the song. Only problem is the title was the same as 2 other hits at the time. also how he had a cameo in the movie… See if you remember next….

Hey Music Junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If you remember spending entire afternoons at that ancient dwelling known as the mall you’ll dig this channel of deep musical nostalgia Make sure to, subscribe below right now so you always get our latest interviews and stories You’ll love what we have coming down the pipeline. Especially today.
I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations - where featured artists take us for a magical deep dive, exploring their greatest songs and albums. Stories and points of view you won’t find anywhere else. Well, today is a special one. This was my favorite song when I was 10 years old. It came out in the glorious summer of 1985. It was the main song from not only the greatest blockbuster of 1985 but maybe the best film of the 80s and we’ve got the master behind it with us today. I’m talking about the Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News from the magical time travel classic Back to the Future. Truly the Wizard of Oz of our time…
It's a movie that our kids watch… It’s not quite in that category, yet but you get what I’m saying. So apparently Huey Lewis was called into a meeting with the biggest filmmaker in the world Steven Spielberg who was producing the film along with Director Bob Zemeckis and his partner Bob Gale who both wrote the screenplay as well. They told Huey they wanted him to write a song for this movie because the film's hero Marty McFly would be a fan of Huey Lewis and the News. Huey was flying high at that moment in time with Sports having spent 1 week at #1 on the album charts in the ultra-competitive year of 1984 where the least amount of albums went to #1 ever.
It was the year of 3 of the biggest blockbusters ever with Michael Jackson's Thriller still riding high, and Prince's Purple Rain that spent 24 weeks at the top, along with Springsteen’s mega-seller Born in the USA, not to mention The Footloose soundtrack…

Huey Lewis and the News changed the 80's. Sports alone would have been enough, but collectively, they released one great song after another. 1985 will always stay fresh in my mind as a year of epic films and soundtracks, but none could top The Power Of Love.

Back To The Future is my all time #1 move. I LOVED Huey's cameo, I got "the inside joke," and I think the song DOES tie in with the movie, however unintentional it was. Its the power of love that kept Marty and his siblings from fading out of the photo, which translates to out of existence. I have seen this movie so many times, that I watched it on a plane once with no headphones and it didn't matter I couldn't hear the dialoge. And I also LOVE Huey Lewis and the News, and I saw them when they first came out. SUCH A GREAT SHOW, and Huey, I think you are the nicest man in music!!

I was working as a bouncer at the Marriott in Worcester. The bar phone rang and I picked it up and it was Mr Lewis’s mother. Mr Lewis was in the lounge and I walked up to him and explained his mother was on the phone. He casually walked over to the phone and talked with his mother for probably over ten minutes. Mr. Lewis was the coolest rock star to grace the lounge Cahoots in Worcester.

It's so refreshing to see a major music star be as humble as Huey. Every time i see him in an interview, he just seems so down to earth. And he has no problem telling you who wrote what or who did what. And it's rarely himself. He said it in this interview "It was a group effort, everybody had input."

The 80s was such a great time to be coming of age! The music was bright and original, it could make you fly or make you cry. Almost all the previous decades from the 1950s to the end of the 1990s were probably the best years in music history. There will never be another time like that. Kinda sad...

I live in the UK and there aren't that many of us HLN fans over here, but I've loved them since I got a copy of Fore! when I was about 12 and Stuck With You was in the charts. Not being as big over here, they played smaller venues later in their career, which meant I could hang around stage doors and meet them, which I did a few times. They have so much time for their fans. After a gig in Belfast I was in the bar of the hotel they were staying in which is attached to the theatre they had just played. In came the band. I bought Huey a Guinness and had a chat. I also sat with Johnny and Marvin for a while and talked. Later I sat with Sean. I'm a big jazz fan and we talked about them having Stan Getz play on one of their tracks and how Stan just blew them away with what he came up with on the spot. I am a pianist, so Sean and I talked synthesizers and Hammond organs. He very kindly invited me backstage for their next gig which was the next day in Dublin. I was at the theatre when they came and I thought he might have forgotten (he was pretty drunk at the bar!) but he came straight towards me, said hello and got me in. He showed me around his keyboard rig and I met his keyboard tech Merritt Pelkey. At the end of the night, the band said goodbye to me, including Huey. They are just so nice. That was a really happy time for me and I have some great photos to remember it with.

One of the tightest show bands in rock history. Adam, you are going to love this true and verifiable story. I lived in Spokane Wa. and a concert that featured Bruce Hornsby and Huey Lewis and the news. It was winter time and Bruce was stuck in Denver. Huey picked up the slack and played for four hours without stop, so we didn't get ripped off. The show began with Jacobs Ladder. This man, and his band because my personal heros, because they didn't have to do that. Ask them, they will remember as it was one of the best shows they ever did. They did every single song.

This is one of my favorite episodes. I was 16 in 1985 and in the beginning of the prime years of my life. The music was cool, the culture was cool, and the movies were cool (but maybe cheesy). I think most people look back to their teen years as their favorites. I saw Back To The Future, and Huey live in 1985 and still remember the thrill from both.
@b.g.5869

The key word here for all of the above is cheesy. Huey Lewis seems like a great guy and he obviously had a lot of success but his music is completely soulless bland 80s pop. There is music that I don't like but I can understand how it could appeal to someone, but I find it impossible to understand how anyone could think the sort of uber commercial 80s pop that Huey Lewis so epitomizes was "cool". It's like getting into the background music of a car commercial.

I remember the first time I heard the song, we were at the lake fishing and camping. The song was blasting at the 4th of July. I also remember driving to Dubuque the weekend the movie opened. Half the theater was girlfriends sitting on their boyfriends lap and their were still people sitting in the aisle. Never been to a movie that sold out so much when it first came out. Other movies sold out but they packed the theater the Friday night Back to The Future opened. Fun days I could fill the gas tank on my T-Bird for $10 and everyone just wanted to have fun. Just friends of every mix no identity needed.

Agree 100% that “Back in Time” is just as good and iconic as “The Power of Love”. From the moment the guitar kicks in, it’s as if your brain gets flooded with the entirety of Back to the Future all at once; it’s akin to Neo getting uploaded the memories of having watched the film in an instant. It’s the quintessential ending credits theme song. One of the better saxophone riffs too, in an era that had many. The song is the perfect opposite to The Power of Love, in that it directly addresses the events of the film, whereas The Power of Love is agnostic - and of course it would be, as it’s featured towards the beginning, when the events hadn’t happened yet.

Germany to my next duty station.I loved it so much, that I had my parents buy the VHS 17:52 copy of the movie when it was released ($65.00). It turned out that I was the only person on the base who had it . I was also lucky enough to catch both The Boss and Huey Lewis & The News when they were on tour in W.Germany. I was also 10 when I saw Back to the Future. I absolutely loved it. I still do. My mom loved it the most in our family. Part of its appeal was its ability to capitalize on the nostalgia of the 50s by juxtaposing it with the modernity of the 80s. Huey Lewis perfectly captured 80s pop-rock in both songs and gave us a nod at that with his cameo in the film. And now the 80s are nostalgic for us like the 50s were nostalgic for my mom. A perfect combination of art, film and song.

Hey Adam, as always, I love your show...it is really awesome. I usually try to guess the song or movie that you are going to cover before you give it up, and this one after you a gave a couple of clues...I knew it! Huey Lewis was definitely great back in the 80's. However, you missed one of the most beautiful songs called "Lady". I am a huge Styx fan and love you mentioned it (when you said the song you were going to talk about that had multiple names and was kind of a common name for a song, I first thought of "Lady" - Styx, Kenny Rogers, The Commodores and my favorite, The Little River Band from 1978! But, I didn't know of a movie in 85' that had any of those songs. Anyway, loved the video and really loved that photo of you and your mother dancing to it! Great job, again Professor!

Professor, nailed it with this episode. It’s my favourite movie. The 80s had the best music and the best movies - and they tied them together so well. BTTF vs Top Gun is often a topic in my friends group. That’s another great soundtrack, but there were so many - Dirty Dancing, Cocktail, Days of Thunder etc. It all went downhill when the 90s rolled in. Terminator 2 (1991 with GNR you could be mine) is almost the last hurrah, and could have easily been an 80s double hit. Last movie soundtrack I bought was Twister. There hasn’t been anything worth buying since. 😢
