You play the bass in such a melodic way Paul. And your bass lines in both the Black Album and Strawberries are sublime. Both albums are so under underrated in the context of composistion and Complexity in my opinion.. Well done mate..:-)

theres no bass tabs Gassy as my playing is virtually untab-able...impossible to explain how I play with a bunch of numbers! Personally I think tab is a load of bollocks, I've never seen an accurate one yet. Use your ears and heart, I never ply the same way twice anyway...by far the best way!

discovering that Paul Gray has a youtube channel totally made my day. Huge fan of the damned, Eddie and the Hot Rods, and the albums you've done with Captain. Quite a cool channel and enjoying seeing you play these songs.

Many,many thanks Paul, big fan for years, I've always loved your bass playing, really melodic and energetic. Police Car,Life on The Line,Stranger on The Town and this are some of my faves. I always thought you were the perfect fit musically for the Damned,that was the last great Damned line up for me.

Finest song from the Gray line up, just my own opinion, my favourite ever Damned track, is Limit Club. He NEEDS to show us all how to play bass on it. You have to show us all the old repetoires you played live. New Rose, Noise, Melody Lee, Smash It Up et al.

Yeah, "Strawberries" is a good album but, probably their last good one for my taste. I've heard bits of "Grave Disorder" and that sounded pretty good but the band finished for me after the Paul Grey era finished. Album wise, in order of preference: 1/ "MachineGun Etiquette" 2/ "The Black Album" 3/ "Damned, Damned, Damned" 4/ "Music For Pleasure" 5/ "Strawberries" Single wise they rarely put a foot wrong until after "Lovely Money" (including most of the B-Sides). Other than "Nasty" and the Love cover, I couldn't be doing with them at all during the Bryn Merrick period ("Grimly Fiendish" Jesus!) and, as I say, other than bits of "Grave Disorder" I've not heard anything since that time that did much for me either. I have, however, seen them live a couple of times over the past fifteen years or so and they are still good fun as a live band.

Paul would you be able to put up some bass tabs for damned songs? There's literally only like 3 on the internet lol.
@Ronno46917 жыл бұрын
GassyNewYork It's not very 'punk' but learning scales and arpeggios and different styles of bass playing in other genres helps with your understanding of what pro-level musicians are playing....keep learning!
@Ronno46917 жыл бұрын
Paul, do you remember from whom or where Sensible got his Ibanez Iceman six string from in the early 1980s? The Black Album is a great melodic rock album!
@troublebrewing21218 жыл бұрын
Nice. Intersesting for me to note that you hardly ever use your pinky on your fretting hand. Guess that's part of what gives you your unique style sound and way of playing. Awesome.
@paulgraybass8 жыл бұрын
nope, never...and yes well deduced, by sliding up/down to the next note rather than fretting it straight as you would with your pinkie I tihnk it gives a whole lot more character
@troublebrewing21218 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply Paul (made my day) I did see you with the Damned a few times, up close and personal at places like the Fulham Greyhound but was so caught up in the chaos of those evenings never really studied your playing at that time, other than it sounding great. :)

The Damned's faster version is punk while Eddie & the Hot Rods original slightly-slower version is more R&B-inspired. RIP Barrie Masters (1956-2019)...

Which band recorded it first?
@l.salisbury12535 жыл бұрын
Eddie & the Hot Rods demoed it in 1979 while Paul Gray was a member. That was never officially released until the 1990 comp "Curse of the Hot Rods" (an EXCELLANT album!).

@@l.salisbury1253 thanks, I always presumed it was a damned original... Also didn't realise PG brought so much creativity to the band.

The Hot Rods' version IS on KZbin. Just-for-fun play 'em back-to-back. (I read that Paul Grey did NOT like they way Captain Sensible & Co. retranslated the song...!
