In Tasmania grapples like this can often be used to de-bark and split the timber when it's for a pulp application in native or re-growth timber when the wood is too big for a processing head. The operator rubs the bark off with the side edges on the grapple and uses the hydraulic powered saw on the left side of the grab to cut the wood to the right length. Our chip mills can only take wood up to a certain size so they use the grabs to split the logs down to the right size specification.
