The little metal tool with hole and screw (which can easily be made out of a piece of wooden dowel) is no good for covered strings!

You are correct. I’ve not had too many bass strings break at the hitch pin. If that happened I would splice on a loop from a discarded bass string, or replace the entire string.

Look at the loop you are replacing and go that same direction. Also make the tail that lays on the plate go the same direction as what you are replacing.
