Anyone listening for an actual argument in this presentation will be disappointed. He even opens with a direct contradiction. I am an atheist who wishes there were a god. Hitchens stated that he does not understand this thinking. I believe he just does not go far enough with the imagination required to make a god. I would like a god who is fun-loving. He laughs a lot. He does not require such things as worship. The god I would want would operate under the understanding that the only way something can be immoral is if it hurts others. Consequently, sexual activity between consenting adults is moral, be it gay or straight. Assault, robbery, etc. is immoral. Hitchens is correct to see scriptural accounts of God as a form of government. However scriptures are quite clear that our forms of government fail over and over and all of the advances we have made have not done away with racism (for example). It is not totalitarianism, it is the ideal form of government and power structure that scripture attempts to reveal to us... Love and yes, constant connection. "It is not good that the man should be alone".

If you watch the entire debate you'll quite clearly see that Chris lies, is corrected by his brother (and the expression on his face when Peter does so says that he knew that Peter was right), and then he repeats the lie later. The rest is selective editing of the facts and misinterpretation of the texts. This is not Christopher's best performance. It is, rather, an exhibition of him liking a 'good row' and enjoying being a radical, even if he's not right. Winning an argument is more important to him than being right.

Those who love God, are only in love with their own reflection. Narcissus, not seeing the lake, but only his reflection and finding love in the water only for it's reflective capabilities. Your version of God only describes how you feel about yourself, your views, your values. When a ripple goes across the lake and disturbs your narcissistic pursuit, you dismiss it. You have confused your love for yourself for a love of God. You speak to your reflection to reinforce your viewpoints. Under normal circumstances, talking to yourself to validate your opinions is an insane activity. In religion, it is considered a spiritual activity.

As a child I grew up, so to speak, in a devoutly religious family. Observing as I did with a childs' wonderment, I often had questions about RELIGION. It wasn't until my adult years that I finally realised that, you can be religious about anything. If everyday when you wake, the first thing that you do is put the kettle on, then that is a religious act. Plainly put, to be religious is just to be repetitive. To have a sense of spirituality is a whole different thing.
