I think the thing that set Hitch apart from other Atheist debaters was his offense-first mentality. He doesn't even entertain the premise that Atheists have any explaining to do. "How do Atheists have a standard for morality?" "I am not even discussing the Atheistic origins of morality until religion apologizes for slavery, the submission of women, the slaughter of our innocent human brothers of every stripe, and the ongoing ancient conflicts that have the entire world in a nuclear standoff. You dare interrogate MY morality when this is the legacy of every religion that claims to promote love, civility, and peace? Perhaps we can discuss this further once you've washed the blood off your hands." As it turns out, the Harlem Globetrotters get by just fine without defense don't they? LOL!

That's men's tragedy, isn't it? We all long for a loving, joyfull world where each and every person gets what they want, without having to hurt others. It's an immense struggle, to stay aware of all the "evil" in the world and to what lengths some people will go to get what they want and at the same time staying aware of everything that's beautiful and good. When I was much younger, I used to be such a shameless positive person. I thought:"Well, in my view, for everything bad that happens, there is another person, or group of people, that made their lives about battling against the "bad things"". For instance: there are people that treat animals like sh*t, abuse them or just don't care. This is horrendous. But there emerges, in reaction, a group of people that dedicate their life to protect and cure these animals. There are aweful wars on, at the moment, but there are a lot of doctors, nurses andsoforth, who put themselves in mortal danger, to help the victims. Now at 61, I'm not so sure anymore. Just watched a documentary about a family of 9 (including the parents) in the biblebelt, Oklahoma. 5 of them were stabbed to death, by the two eldest sons. These children were homeschooled, because the parents were afraid of the big, bad, outside world. But they DID condone PC's and internet. Of course without any parental advisory. How effing ignorant, no, plain stupid, can you be?? To NOT realize, how much unfiltered, dark and horrible stuff you can find, there. Both boys were playing video war games with extreme violence. I don't blame those games, persé, but I do blame the parents. I suspect, there was something genetically wrong with those boys; even at a very young age you just can tell by the way they looked out of their eyes, there was something very wrong. I realize, that so much pain, annihilation and suffering could be avoided, if a lot of people were better educated, less ignorant. But since the last "diagnose", that we globally are all getting more stupid through internet, instead of better informed, I'm beginning to loose hope. As long as there are still people, that don't "believe" in evolution, it's hard to think where to start, when it's about creating a better world. There are too many different interests for different people.

People are absolutely welcome to believe in God and everything else mystical as much as they want. I cannot, for my part, say that there is or isn't such a thing. The only problem comes when people try to take that subjective faith and enforce it as objective reality. It's what is annoying about the right wing in America at the moment. They'll readily say that a man cannot be a woman. OK, this is understandable. But don't then turn around and look for certain religious doctrines to be enforced as education in schools or have any enshrined position in public life. The latter can be argued to be at least as delusional and is therefore the absolute essence of hypocrisy.

@@thomascanfield8571 Do you even remotely know how many beliefs much less religions there are in America and your saying they all deserve EQUAL time so as to not disenfranchise an aggrieved tax payer? Think again. Yes, you have the freedom to send your child to your madrassas or parochial school as long as no tax money goes with them. Religion is faith and is best done at home and in your heart. Yes, show your faith but do not make it part of mandatory public education. Sounds fair and reasonable for all. It's workable.

His second agreement was actually very good. It’s a valid point and a proper critique of how religion creeps into the legal system when it doesn’t have to. Even as a religious person, I would say we should only try to impose our values on others, legally speaking, if we believe the lives or welfare of the innocent are at stake. His first argument, though, like usual, miss understands the moral argument. Moral ontology, my good friends, not moral epistemology. It is self evidently true that people of any belief can construct a moral system and act moral apart from Christianity. The strength of the moral argument is of the grounding of more values. God grounds moral values in something outside of human beings. If you take away God or somebody with sufficient authority over humanity, morals become humanly dependent. Therefore, they lose their objectivity. This effectively undermines what most people mean when it comes to right and wrong

“Where do you get your free will from?” is such a nonsense question. (I’m paraphrasing, because it annoyed me so much, i’m not going to re-listen.) And i’ve heard Rabbi Wolpe trot it out multiple times, while clearly thinking it’s super smart. But i’d need him to first defend the question. I think it amounts to a category error, because free will (if we have it) surely isn’t a _thing_ that you would get _from somewhere_ . “Where do you get your free will?” is as good a question as, “Where do you get your realness?”

The _"true-believer"_ or theist's final rebuttal upon encountering someone who is a non-theist or an atheist often ends up as the superficial ultimatum of, _"Well, so what DO you believe IN?"_ and this gets to the crux of the matter, and is therefore tantamount to asking, _"Well, so then where DO you get your superstitious and nonsensical ideas from?"_ Therefore, BELIEF itself is not the real problem: The problem with theists more properly begins when they _"BELIEVE IN."_ - j q t -

Incorrect. If a divine being existed, they very well could have "set the rules" and then remained hands off. However, the rules are internally consistent as far as we know them and thus don't require an outside force for the universe to function, thus as LaPlace and Hitchens say "it functions without that assumption" (that there is a god or gods).

I spent a lot of years thinking i knew nothing. I spent a lot of time thinking and believing there was no god, no purpose, no design, no morality, no ethics, no truth. I eventually realized that line of thinking is bs as well. I would much rather be on the planet with people who believe in a higher purpose, who believe in truth, right and wrong, morality, and above all love. It just so happens that i think godly people are the best people to be around and I think hitchens is an angry and elitist man who doesnt have love. I wouldnt want to be around him.

If you field religion or god as a moral compass you disqualify yourself. Or do you sleep with your daughter, kill your son based on a command received in a dream, find slavery acceptable and prohibit women from executing same rights as men by threat of eternal hell? If you do you are not allowed to claim any morality but I hope you do not which means you begin to break your religious shackles.

Your flaw in thinking is that god, any god has something, anything to do with "truth, right and wrong, morality and above all love'. None of the Abrahamic gods teach any of it. They are about murder, betrayal, genocide, misogamy, incest, infanticide, slavery... and one is required to surrender all cognitive faculties to get to and remain in their good graces.

It is reasonable to believe in Christ and our Creator. I'm extremely grateful that my sins are forgiven by Jesus' sacrifice and my acceptance of His gift.

@quill444 Are you being sarcastic? If so, ha! If not, you're suggesting no one believes in anything, as anything being believed requires belief. God bless, and thanks.

When children are brainwashed into believing in things such as _burning bushes,_ or _talking snakes,_ or _flying horses,_ and in things that have _magical powers that defy all logic and reason,_ then as adults, there is virtually nothing they cannot be persuaded to believe in. 🐍 _"We're living in the End Times,"_ said no one ever who has been right. _"Cognitive dissonance is a QAnon science-denying, anti-vaxxer finding more supporting 'evidence' on a hand-held invention that contains over ten billion transistors."_ 🤔 - j q t -

No, it is neither reasonable nor sensical. Firstly you have to select which if the 1000’s of proposed creators / gods / deities to believe in, and no, not just the one your parenst told you to believe in. Then you need to look at the evidence for said entity existing. Then you have to question it’s motivations and cruelty. Pick diseases, cancers, parasites and ask why it created them and such pain and misery. Ask why it’s creations are so fundamental flawed. Putting such poorly designed and fragile organisms on a vulnerable rock in space, unable to survive outside their tiny habitat in a vast universe and placed next to a nuclear star that is destined to explode and destroy it entire creation. Utter madness. Or their are the perfectly rational scientific explanations.

I have no use for people who believe in fantasy. You can watch Star Trek all you want. You can go to conventions, buy the merchandise and wear the apparel proudly. But don’t try to convince me it’s real. In fact, I wish all “believers” wore their nonsense (clothing, crucifix, tattoos, etc) all the time. It lets us know who the crazy people are.

@@HonestyOverEverythingbro…if God struck this man down and gave him throat cancer for speaking out through his own free will (peacefully) which God himself gave him, wouldn’t that be a red flag of like…a non perfectly loving God. Why couldn’t God talk to him directly and do the whole “I am God” thing??!

@jaredyaretz3035 He didn't give him cancer, he chose to smoke, but if he was a Christian, maybe he would've quit smoking. So God "let" it happen. God loves everyone but he gives us free will.

No it was esophageal cancer Quite often associated with alcohol and cigarettes which is sad in his case as we lost a very astute mind and orator way to soon as so much he had to say about events now he addressed with accuracy many years before

Cancer is man-made as well. Therefore, if man himself doesn't like another man "speaking out" against him, man can "make things happen" to certain men.
