The atmosphere in the bunker must have been surreal. An alien world behind thick steel doors; a coffin for some, a prison for others. Inside the smell of sigarsmoke and liquor, flickering lights, dirty water and fear - outside the world they knew crashing down without mercy. It was enough to drive the most intelligent generals mad.

The phone operator changed the details of his story quite a few times over the years. For example, he originally asserted that he heard the gun shot and that it was he who opened the door to Hitlers room and discovered his body, in later years however he claimed he never heard the shot and that it was someone else who discovered Hitlers body.
