I had the opportunity to ask the German people I interviewed about Hitler and being Nazis, and all but one women said they didn't get involved in politics. I would say to each one ... "Then who were all those people that lined the streets in parades with Hitler and had their arms uplifted and straight out?" They either chuckled or sat quietly and stared at my desk.

As with bullies in a class or an office, it takes one sociopath and a couple of their boldest followers to turn the place around, and get the herd to follow, regardless of the deeds. Only a fraction of people have enough mental integrity to not be influenced by the (perceived) majority and not give in to intimidation by numbers.
@jjns56008 күн бұрын
It goes beyond that actually with regards to the rise of Naziism in Germany. Militarism and national strength comprised European identity for most of its's history. Among the European nations, Germany especially felt shafted by the tripe 'entente' (England, France, Russia), as well as by the U.S. after Versailles. A proud people having lost WW1 (though not really on the battlefield), the Kaiser, a symbol of national strength abdicating and fleeing, the failure of a new Democracy (Weimar), hyper-inflation, the Depression, sky-rocket unemployment all under the growing threat of a potential Communist takeover...Hitler's message (false though it was), presented a promise to all things progressive again. Now because this was a dictatorship, which manipulated government, had a powerful propaganda machine, etc., yeah, they did what all dictatorships do in terms of subjugating, "bullying" and silencing the opposition. So it's not just a case of "bullying". Didn't you listen to the documentary in its' fullness??

If they only did one on Stalin but i guess that incident in Ukraine didn't matter
@kieranororke620Ай бұрын
No accredited historian has ever claimed that Stalin's crimes 'didn't matter'. The Nazis and Soviets were Europe's two worst ever dictatorships and they were often very similar in their disregard for human rights and lives. But you've just made that up to try and take the focus off Nazi crimes, which presumably you want to whitewash. In case you haven't noticed, there are plenty of documentaries about the crimes of Stalin's regime against his own people and others, whereas this one is about the Nazis' crimes against their own people and others. Do try and keep up at least.

The winners asked the German civilians and soldiers about their responsability ! Did the countries that defeated Napoleon Bonaparte ask the French civilians and soldiers about their responsability ?! People don’t appreciate the depth and convenience of antisemitism nor the strength of conservatism and the Prussian military tradition that had not been erased in ww1. Ww2 could have been averted if we had not agreed to an armistice until we held German ground and the German nation realized they had been defeated by the Allie’s and not back stabbing Jewish communists.
