Hjalmar Schacht is a largely forgotten figure. And yet, Hitler’s rise to power depended on him. Adapted from the novel The Devil’s Banker by Jean-François Bouchard, this documentary paints the portrait of a fascinating character, at once intellectually brilliant and imbued with an icy cynicism, and who, paradoxically, was never a member of the Nazi party, despite being one of its pillars.
Documentary: Inside Hitler’s Killing Machine : The Banker of the Third Reich (2016)
Director: François Pomès, Quentin Domart & Angèle Berland

Ja! Schacht was a canny one!! One of my favourite anecdotes from the Nuremburg trial concerns Schacht. At the very beginning of the trial, whilst he was in his cell, he said to his guard (he spoke fluent English): "Young man! Do you know why I am here?" "Sure...You're an indicted war criminal on trial for war crimes!" "NO!....I am here so that your Mr.Justice Jackson will have at least ONE defendant who will be acquitted, to show the world that this is a fair trial!" How's that for confidence?!!

Much of it started during school integration and forced bussing. Millions of southern Democrats left the party and joined the Republican party. Then the Democrats got infested with far left liberal socialist thinking. The Republicans infested with the far right religious moral majority. I lived through every bit of it and I don't have a centered party to vote for.

He also had an IQ of 140+ which is considered genius-tier. Even Julius Streicher, who scored the lowest among the IQ tests performed on the remaining leading figures of the Third Reich had an IQ of 106, which is still above average in virtually all countries.

140 is very high for average people but not for world leaders. Google the IQ of American presidents, for example. I'm sure you will find that some presidents you despise and consider unintelligent are actually far more intelligent than you thought. Anyway, this banker may have had a high IQ, but his strategy was essentially to artificially inflate the economy through deficit spending. There is no intelligence in that. Your next door neighbor might be eating lobster and driving a new car, but when it's paid for by a credit card they cannot pay off, and have to invade Poland to try to plunder resources to compensate, well, you get the idea.

This central banker belonged to the Brotherhood of Private National Central Bankers and automatically was a misfit within the Hitler regime. It was inevitable that this conspirator with Montagu Norman (Britain) et al would be cashiered. A.H. thought him a traitor, and, no doubt, he was in regard to the National Socialist regime. Given his views on banking, he, if honest, should have resigned soon after A.H. assumed power. Instead, he remained and tried to detour A.H. policy onto the preferred course set by the Brotherhood of Private National Central Bankers. His firing set the course of wholesome banking, allowing the German people to escape the Great Depression. Under FDR, America was not so lucky.

commenting on Schacht did not know what Nazi party was up to is like saying an investor into one's venture or business is not aware of the one's business plan lol. In other words, he knew, if not himself developed the overall plan, which provisions included installing military presence and superiority over jurisdictions of others with lesser power and might or influence. Just my opinion )

There was a left wing in the early party, pre-hitler, the term was left in the title, the party, though, albeit with some elements of, was not socialist - curiously in the very title of the party, there was the contradiction of ‘national socialist’, the German Workers Party adds further to the confusion.

The title "the devil's banker" pretty much sums it up. The details of Hjalmar Schacht while interesting does little to change the fact that this brilliant man was complicit in participating in the worst humanitarian horror in history. Albert Speer, another highly intelligent man also knew better, but he chose the path to fortune and power when he knew of the likely humanitarian consequences... We can all talk a good game but in the end we make our own choices.

Read history. The National Socialist Party, i.e; the Nazi Party had absolutely nothing to do Socialism. They used the word in their name because Socialism was the most popular form of politics in Germany post WW1. It was a massive lie in order to fool the working classes into voting for them. The Nazi Party fashioned their Fascism on that of Fransico Franko, the Facist leader of Spain.
