What an amazing story. It is definitely one of the most interesting tales from WWII and a favorite of mine. I am surprised it hasn't been made into a movie. Anyways, great work! Thank you.

'The Eagle has landed' (1976) is as close as you'll get to a movie about this event. It basically starts in the aftermath of this mission, with a follow-up mission to abduct Winston Churchill.

Check out the role of Otto Harald Mors in this rescue mission. Many sources actually credit him with planning it (under Student), though Skorzeny was a more colorful character and got most of the credit.

If you visit Ascoli Piceno, the other side of the Grand Sasso on the plain of the Adriatic, there’s a stained glass triptych depicting soldiers in German uniforms. I don’t know why, but it’s a fascinating thing to see in an 12th century church. A few years ago there were some seriously bad earthquakes around there and old churches were damaged so I’m not sure what state it’s in.

Skorzeny had nothing to do with the planning of the glider operation. Student allowed Skorzeny to go along with some of his men but without any authority and subordinate to Major Mors, who was in command of the forces. Your presentation of the operational events is incorrect.

Could we get some information about Ernst Kaltenbrunner, head of the RHSA. Very little information about him. Any good information on his friendship with Otto Skorzeny.

How did the rest of the german soldiers make it back home?

FYI Gran Sasso is just 2 hr by car from Rome, so should not be too difficult.

They drove out on the Italian roads. The Germans hadn't wished to risk Mussolini being recaptured by the Italian army or partisans, so they flew him out. The German soldiers didn't seem worried about trouble from the Italians, army or partisans, so they just drove back toward Rome.

In the footage from the event everyone but Mussolini is in good spirits

It is quite incredible they photographed the whole event and the photographs are in the public domain. The German propaganda machine certainly had a field day in the aftermath.
