As time has gone on, it has become more and more taboo to play the character of Hitler. There was about 30 years after WW2 in which people wanted to see Hitler re-enactments to grapple with the recent past, but since then the mood has changed. It’s almost like black face now. You just don’t do it, because it will stir up a mob, and if you already did it then don’t talk about it.

Anthony Hopkins is a marvellous actor, but it's impossible for him to lose his natural warmth and geniality. This sits strangely with the character of one of the most evil men in history.
