@@detroitpolak9904 1) According to Wikipedia, the writer, an American raised in China, and the director (or the studio head, I can not verify now) wanted an all-Chinese or Chinese-American cast, but the latter admitted the public was not ready. 2) You know, I watched the John Wayne on TV, when I was a pretty young child. Maybe it was because I did not know yet who Ghenghis Khan had been or what he should look like, but it fascinanted me. In hindsight, it was not John Wayne's finest hour. Didn't he play a Scandinavian sailor too? 3) Muni played Pasteur, Chopin, Zola, Juaréz (just to mention historic figures), etc. He played everyone!

I remember Hopkin's as uneven in his portrayal but it's an interpretation of Hitler rather than an impersonation. The 1975 book that it's based on (The Bunker - James O'Donnell) is better.

As time has gone on, it has become more and more taboo to play the character of Hitler. There was about 30 years after WW2 in which people wanted to see Hitler re-enactments to grapple with the recent past, but since then the mood has changed. It’s almost like black face now. You just don’t do it, because it will stir up a mob, and if you already did it then don’t talk about it.

We are supposed to imagine that the English coming out of Sir Anthony's mouth is actually German in the world of the film, and it would be the German of a native speaker, not some odd non-native accent (which is what German accented english would be!)
