Any tips on using renoise in a live application like this? It looks like you organize your music a specific way. I’ve been using renoise for the last 10 years or so but I feel like my songs are all over the place so I have no idea where to start to get this kind of workflow goin.

Hey friend. For me personally, I tend to create percussion patterns to start with. I will render patterns of drums I've created into instrument slots. I will do my best to add some variety to the sound timbres (process things differently) for each loop. Usually about 10 samples is nice to start with. Once I get nice rhythm rolling with the loops in this 'Song Instance', I will open a separate instance of Renoise in the background to work on some basslines. So I get the rhythm playing in the Song instance and then in the second instance of Renoise I will audition basslines by hitting the spacebar at just the right time. It's easier than people think - you really don't need to sync anything. Next, I render my 8 bars of bassline to WAV, and make another 8 bars..etc. I like to use the 'randomize notes' tool for inspiration sometimes on my existing bassline. Great tool. I just chose a particular key and scale - and make some additional tweaks as I go. Also, when rendering, I render 'each pattern to a separate file'. That way each exported bar of my bassline can be imported into an instrument slot in the song instance of Renoise. By getting my bassline in chunks it can easily be referenced, sequenced and mixed up using the sample offset command (OSxx) in the pattern editor. Perhaps I do this because I'm a control freak and like to be able to access the bits easily. Using one bar loops with OSxx works for me. Sometimes when I'm working on a new song, I'll become completely stumped for ideas. No problem, I just make some new drums at the right tempo (without even listening to my song). I used Korg Gadget LE App on my phone today to make beats and it was wonderful. I added them into the song and was pleasantly surprised at how well they fit. Recently I've been stressed out and I make fast music because it seems to calm me down. I think I read somewhere, if you want to get a project done quickly hand it off to someone who is already busy. They will surely complete it fast. Maybe if I wasn't so busy, I would be less inclined to produce. Stay busy!? lol I have no idea, friend.

@@hitoritori thank you so much for the reply!! I’m definitely going to explore the idea of writing different parts in different instances of renoise. Been looking into the more generative aspects of renoise too. Seems like I could do some interesting stuff with probabilities on sequences and phrases.
@hitoritori
@hitoritori 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds nice and I think that will be a great way to go:) I’m interested to hear what you’ll try. Red Hoot Oboe Monger’s generative use of phrases has been pretty inspiring so far. He has kindly shared a few of his generative song file examples on the Renoise forum. I’m sure you’ve likely checked those out already, ha. Keep in touch friend!
@thinthinwalls
@thinthinwalls 3 жыл бұрын
@@hitoritori yes that’s what piqued my interest! I was trying to do more generative works in Renoise a few years ago with random lfos applied to different effects but found it pretty difficult to make anything sound good haha. I’m also exploring tidalcycles a bit too to see if I can incorporate that with renoise somehow in a live sense. Maybe like cutting a break via tidal while renoise plays a sequence of melodies. Haven’t gotten a chance to dig too deep into that yet, but I’ve seen ORCA working in tandem with renoise and it looks like a fun tool.
@thinthinwalls
@thinthinwalls 3 жыл бұрын
I remember I made a doofer tool that could chop drums using the stutter effect and that was pretty good for generative drums in renoise. The new probability command takes that to a whole new level!

do you manually map the scenes to the controller? i have a similar midi controller and wanna try something similar
@hitoritori
@hitoritori 4 жыл бұрын
By scenes, I assume you mean instances (copies of the Renoise application open). Yes, I map them manually and those mappings stay locked to the songs after saving. When mapping, I personally recommend using a different colour theme for each instance. By keeping your midi assignments consistent to the left or right side of the controller it will make things easier. It also helps with hand-eye coordination / ear-to-hand coordination.
@untilde
@untilde 4 жыл бұрын
@@hitoritori Thanks for the heads up! I'll try it with renoise 2.8 soon. I'm completely stunned by your work! Never seen anything like it before - at least not with Renoise, which is not very used for live performances.

What controller are you using to play? I'm looking for something similar that could control 16 channels - can this controller do that? If not, can you please recommend a controller that can? Many thanks. BTW, some crazy playing. With such fast hand movements, you should be able to pull some crazy moves on a joystick playing fighting games!
@hitoritori
@hitoritori 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. This does feel like a game to me sometimes. The controller is an OHM 64 from Livid Instruments. They don't manufacture these anymore, however you might be able to find a used one online somewhere. In terms of 16 channels, I've used this controller to control 8 stereo channels - with two channels mapped per fader. As you can see there are also potentiometers that can be assigned to your channels as well. It's really just a blank slate and you can assign your midi however you like. For a full 16 individual midi channels you could try an Allen & Heath ZED R-16 as your Control Surface.

what do the buttons do?
@hitoritori
@hitoritori 4 жыл бұрын
Buttons!! Yes friend. Most of the grid is assigned to trigger 'play next pattern' in the green instance. The triggered patterns are very short and each contains 1/8 of a drum break. Each break is spread over 8 patterns using the offset pattern command. The top row of buttons on the controller will solo a particular track. There's even a MIDI track devoted to the Electribe Sampler with audio coming back via soundcard and line-in device (set to midi return mode) . All of this is happening in the green instance. Other buttons are assigned to trigger various effects in all three instances (red, blue, green) of Renoise.
