I had a girlfriend whose mother was from Chile and she used to tell me about being a teenager in Santiago in the 1970s. Despite hardly anyone speaking English, most of the songs on the radio were English-language hits and rest were the bigger artists from Spain and some local acts, with a few Italians thrown in here and there! She introduced me to two songs that were popular in Chile that I'd never heard of: "Jakaranda" by Lally Stott and "Wild Safari" by Barrabas. And she introduced me to old "Musica Libre" clips from Chilean television. I really enjoyed watching those teenagers dancing choreographed routines to the hits of the day and it was very interesting to see which songs were popular in Chile in at that time. Cyan "Mama Papa"... Giorgio Moroder "Arizona Man"... and Jungle Jim "Big Fat Oranguman" which the Musica Libre kids danced to at the Santiago zoo.

one has to keep in mind that Germany was most of the time the 'travel master' country in the 20. century (and still today among the most traveling nation). And the likeminded countries around (Austria, German-Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Northern countries quite similar). This also means that many hits were also exported all the time to the traveling destinations all over the world as kind of additional source of publishing. Thats why you often have hits which are known in Europa AND Latin America, parts of Africa, Middle East and Asia but less for instance in the US, Canada or Australia. And some hits were also imported (or lets say got an additional push) - for instance from an Italian trip etc. Apart from that, there are also some hits which were not that high in the different charts but kept going all the time in the mainstream or bigger bubbles - and became iconic this way, which then creates over time the feeling they had to be a 'nr. 1' hit, because so famous! Its a bit like Star Trek. When it came out it was rather a flop - but over time it became iconic and mainstream knowledge.

"Please don't go" from "Double You" would not have been a flop in the UK. Unfortunately, an English record company not being able to distribute it in the UK, because it was already in concession to others, had an identical version made by KWS, boycotting the song of the Italian group on the market. Later they were convicted of plagiarism but by then the damage had been done. Then many Italian Eurodance songs were successful in Germany but not in the UK. (An example is Mo-Do's song "Eins, Zwei, Polizei") But also Italo Disco in the eighties was very successful in Germany but little in the UK. (an example is Gazebo's piece "I Like Chopin") Both songs reached number 1 in Germany.

@dahooliiiАй бұрын

@@PolarbearKA Modern Talking ever was garbage! From UK comes from early 1980ies 'til middle 1980ies very much of the best pop music ever. In these era in Germany charted the top10 for examples: Vader Abraham&Die Schlümpfe, Mike Krüger, Gottlieb Wendehals....and so on! All Nonsense 'Music'! And non important things like Modern Talking, Sandra, CC Catch or boring american Mainstream Music ("Classic Rock"). In Germany always was the musical taste very different or strange!
@christophpreuss3058Ай бұрын
Interesting compilation, but I think since it´s the pre-streaming era you´ll have to consider that you had to ship vinyl records into the stores. I guess a lot of songs in the early years weren´t released in the UK (like Camouflage or the Rainbirds songs).

I've included only songs that received a full single release: 7'', 12'' and promo in the 70s and 80s and CD single in the 90s. I'm ignoring songs that had limited release.

With many German singers I'm not surprised when they didn't reach high positions or weren't released in the UK. Different with famous British/American etc. artists. Guess there were other songs topping the UK charts back then...

You don't have to forget that the promo was different from one country to the other. Some songs were a TV-Theme in one country or in a TV-commercial-spot or sometimes the impact of a live performance in a TV Show could have a big inpact in the charts of the countries.

There’s a reason why Germany ranks among the top 3 music markets in the world. That’s why so many bands, including those from the UK, aim to make it big on the German charts. At least 30 years ago… I believe now the UK ranks higher than Germany.
@publicminx17 күн бұрын
Germany is still the bigger market. More people and richer people right in the center of Europe which is also influencing all of its neighbors and so on.

@publicminxАй бұрын
maybe you have German origins? - and I dont talk about the Anglen and Saxons back then ;) ... but serious: a bad or no Chart ranking did not automatically mean that one could not listen to songs in radio/TV, at friends, clubs - or at a vacation spot in another country. And especially if one liked certain bands then most songs of an album (sometimes no song) were never in charts - but known to a certain bubble, sometimes even famous without charts to a mainstream due to other ways. Actually, if Germans and British were not that separated in for instance Mallorca then many hits might have been more shared ;)

If that was true then record companies wouldn't drop off any artists from their labels, but that's not the reality of how success is measured.

The English people just understand the lyrics of the songs.
@publicminxАй бұрын
you both are wrong. first of all, those tracks are not shit and basically none of those had a better versions in UK. thats just bullshit. Secondly: its usually irrelevant if lyrics are understood or not. And the lyrics of most songs in all countries are no high literature. Means: thats also just bullshit. Typical wrong projections. A real difference is that Germany was and is the biggest economy right in the center of Europe (and it was most of the time travel master - likeminded countries around similar) with masses of borders to all kind of countries around. This means it had more relations to Italy, Netherlands, Scandinavia, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, even to the cold war separated East - and so on. This means you had all the time a much higher traffic and fluctuation of all kind of people. For instance: masses of Germans and likeminded around travel to Italy and bring back an Italian hit and/or influence a German hit there. Similar in Spain (for instance via Mallorca and co). Similar in Greek and so on... Thats why you had much earlier in Germany are more multicultural song variation and all kind of accents were common - as well as also singing in English. There is a bit more homogenization between most European countries with Germany than with UK (except one of the many famous UK bands with international reputation - but also here are sometimes detail differences. Barclay James Harvest for instance had more success in Germany than UK). Another aspect is that Germany and its suburb countries is a much bigger market than UK which also means slightly different priorities regarding cooperation, marketing, timings, concerts etc. - UK was also more focused on the US/Canada/Australia and vice versa which also had a certain impact.
