Trance Dance where originaly a protest against the style of bands like Modern Talking, Ben and Pelle wanted a tougher style but still following the theme to fill in a missing gap that was previously empty at the time. When i was a kid in the 80s they where as big as they where in the 90s which is super cool in my opinion! There often tend to be a slight gap between kids groing up in different decennias, but not at all here!

Let's face it, "Maria Magdalena" was basically a hit everywhere outside the English-speaking world. All of mainland Europe, Latin America, Africa, East Asia, etc. Not knowing this song basically outs you as being American/Canadian/British/Australian. It's almost as if Sandra is playing a game of Truman Show with the Anglosphere. It feels weird for me to be an American who knows this song (and is a Sandra fan in general, with several of her CDs special-ordered from abroad!)
@yossarian6799
@yossarian6799 8 күн бұрын
Sandra was hugely popular in South Africa, an ostensibly English-speaking country. She was out-selling Madonna at her peak. Alphaville and Modern Talking also had many hits in Sunny S'effrica. That country has a long history of English-language hits by European artists. Amanda Lear, Luv', Peter Maffay, Maywood, Linda Williams, Shuki & Aviva, and one-hit wonders like Ruschda, Pierre Groscolas, Titanic, Jeronimo, Danyel Gerard, Cyan, and countless others, including, and especially, Left Side's "Like A Loco-Motion", which was a big hit in Portugal and Brazil and one of my personal favorites! The Dutch were cranking out some seriously bangin' sh/t in the 70s. And all the UK acts that had hits there but were all but unknown in the UK. 1970s acts like Duffy, Kincade, Keith Hampshire, Shabby Tiger, and Big John's Rock 'n' Roll Circus. The Edgar Broughton Band had a huge following there though not so much on mainstream radio. And remember the "Second British Invasion" that swept the US when MTV exploded? Half those songs weren't hits in the UK, or didn't do nearly as well. "She Blinded Me With Science" comes to mind. Wang Chung and The Outfield also did way better in the 'states than in Blighty and Naked Eyes never once saw the UK Top 40!

Interesting. I do recognise many as totally dominating the radio here in Sweden. I know two bands that could also qualify for a list like this: CCS and Les Humphries Singers. CCS did chart in the UK but generally lower than in Sweden. In particular, their wonderful rendition of "Sixteen tons" was a top 10 hit in Sweden but marginal in the UK. While CCS was a UK band, Les Humphies Singers was german, which can account for them AFAIK more or less ignored in the UK while getting a range of top 10 hits in Sweden including two #1 ("Mexico" and "Kansas City"), and also scoring many hits in other parts of Europe.

One cold rainy day it came on radio, three seconds after I started my father's Land Rover Discovery (V8, 5-spd manual, MY '96) and I felt like a king that could conquer any steep mountain in Scotland. The only thing that worked properly in the car was the Sony stereo and the V8. It seems like this hit had the same success in the UK, that British cars had in Sweden.

The easiest way to show England is weird is Depeche Mode are Gods around the world since the 80s basically, and England talks about them like some tiny band thats just started. This is a band that are way bigger than U2. Coldplay or anything else for that matter. Played for 20.000 people in the mid 80s and since early 2000s can gather 44.000 people every single tour in Denmark. No one can do that date after date after date for 20 years or so. And also play several nights in Denmark in different places on the same tour. No one does that here.. So thats proves that UK are not that sussed when it comes to their own stuff.. Adam Ant having sold out tours in England to this day even though people dont see him anywhere is also interesting. Hes seen as the best live act in the 21st century by the Americans. Rolling Stone magazine did a thing about that in 2004 or so. 😊

@АндрейМягчило the status these guys have around europe is insane. I lived in England for most of the 90s and they hardly mentioned them. From jan 1994 to nov 1999 i saw them on tv two times. One was a late ITV special centered around the release of ULTRA and the ither thing was some 80s tribute thing. I read one article about them. And that was about Dave Gahan thinking he was Jim Morrison and having a Jesus complex. It was about the whole Faith and Devotion period. That was a very long tour. It basically had two parts and therefore have two different tour programmes. It the the second tour i never did since my first in 86. But too much stuff was going on around that time. Splitting up with an important girl took so much out of me i ended up wanting to hide for a while in England where no one would ask about her a year later she left... So moving to England didn't set me up for DM Concerts at all. Even when working i jist didnt have the same money as on the dole in Denmark... So i only saw one act in 6 years in England whereas here it was more like 70-80 bands a year... But that Article was very anti DM. Not a great band, they're a joke, all that just doesn't fit the press in Europe where it's basically The Best to Come Out of England Since The Beatles... So it's so weird to go over there and the whole thing is just reversed almost...

"Highland" by One More Time is a fantastic song. I had never heard of it until I moved to Czechia, where it regularly appears on the radio. That's one song the UK really missed out on. Twisted Sister's track is great too. "Shame Shame Shame" by whoever this Izabella is, wasn't a hit in the UK in 1992 because Sinitta had a top 30 hit with the song. It's amazing how artists like DJ Bobo, Kate Ryan & Sandra were huge across the rest of Europe and never had a single hit in the UK. With Bobo, it was probably connected to how stupid his name sounds in English (e.g. Bobo the Clown).

In some cases, it's not strange at all, it's simply too bad lyrics for someone whose first language is English. Swedish musicians have gotten much better at it, but in the past it could be really bad, when it could even mean something completely different to an English speaker than to someone who has learned English as a second language. If I'm being completely honest, I think most of the list is shit, they probably had better music in the UK.

Evils Toy later just T.O.Y. did a harder version as well that i have on their album Silver Tears. Secret Service was a forgotten treasure that brought back great memories of youth club trips on a friday evening. Army of Lovers was a very important one as even all my new wave friends loved that one. I didnt at the time, but came round 10 years later. It was too camp for my liking. This shows just that UK doesn't have a good taste when it comes to music and why Sweden owns the Eurovision song contest and UK sucks at it.

I am honestly more impressed by the fact that so many Swedish artists even made it to the UK list in the first place, even a low rank in the UK is honorable in my opinion, it is always much harder UK is both much, much bigger and a foregin nation with obviously native Ennglish speaking people, especialy concidering that kids in Swerdish shools where not even teached English before the 4th class until the -90s. In Sweden one can easily get away with very much made up English in song texts, but not so much in the UK i think.

And most UK artists are only great in the UK 😂 Let's see I know of Anastacia, Oasis, The Beatles, Sex Pistols, Spice Girls, James Blunt and Amy Winehouse from the top of my head. Is there any UK artists (outside of Eurovision music) that had an international hit in the past 5 years?
