So with Golda’s story, traditionally a linen chemise would be worn under a corset/stays. This absorbs sweat and protects the corset. It also protects the skin. From the footage I’ve seen of other actors where the corset is visible they don’t wear the chemise underneath. I get that this is a choice by the producers but if it’s not visible then a chemise should always be worn. It has a functional use. Women used to wear corsets/stays all day for centuries, doing manual labour, women worked out how to wear them as well but it often feels like this knowledge is lost. It’s not Golda’s fault at all for not knowing, but the costumers should know better and raise a red flag on something like this. Corsets should not be torturous. I do want to credit the production crew for rescuing Golda when she needed it, so they are doing a lot right for health and safety.

@@anniestrooo oh I agree they’ve thrown accuracy out the window. But it’s not hard to tuck in a chemise under a corset so it isn’t visible (or even tack stitch a temporary linen lining in).

Thank you so much for saying this!! From the very first scene of season one episode one, when we see Daphne being laced into her corset and there are red marks visible on her skin, this has bothered me. And then we see the same thing in the next scene with Philippa Featherington. While I understand that Bridgerton is not attempting to be historically accurate and that for some scenes it's more practical and visually appealing forego a chemise (sex scenes, for example), it makes no sense whatsoever to not put the actresses in one if it won't be visible. There is an actual purpose for wearing them and Golda's story illustrates exactly why. Not only that but the chemise helps to keep the corset clean and dry. Why the costume department is allowing their cast to work 12 hour days in a structural garment without the protection of a chemise is something I don't comprehend.

It actually makes me really angry that happened to Goulda, because it shouldn't have. REAL corseted dresses should ALWAYS have a linen chemise underneath to absorb sweat, provide a layer between the corset and the skin, and prevent exactly that from happening. I know the costume designers don't care about historical accuracy for the show design and aesethetic, and thats 100% fine, but they SHOULD care about things like that which had a very real practical purpose, it would not have taken away from the design of the queens dresses to give her a chemise for her own health and safety.
