Hey, Billy. I know I'm not alone in feeling this way, but I truly appreciate all the hours and skill you put into EDITING every video to give us a good balance of the good and bad that virtually define fishing for all of us. You recently told me in a reply to one of my comments that the halibut fishing has been dismally slow this summer. That said, I hope that you soon hook and land a HUGE one as a much-deserved reward for all your patience and persistence. Tight lines, Chris (Maine, USA)

Great video as always Billy. I love that you show the frustration of fishing as well. I have lost so many big cods and big pollacks to the kelp. And at times have I really hated the kelp, but it is hard to stay away as many big fish love to hunt in and around the big kelp. I remember one time many years ago when I fished with very light gear as I did not expect any big fish. I had a 5-12 gram rod and 0.12 mono when I hooked into something much bigger than I expected. And of course it swam into the kelp, and I waited for it to swim out and it did before it again returned to the kelp and after some time it went out again to only return shortly after. This lasted for a very long time, but finally it got to tired and I managed to get it to where I stood and I could grab it and and bring it up from the waves. And it was brought home to become fish cakes. It was a 7.4 kg Pollack and still today, I can't believe how lucky I was to not lose that fish. I don't know if you have tried to fish with coalfish as bait at that spot, but often you can find wolf-fish in places like that and coalfish are great bait for them in my experience. Looking forward to your next video!

good video, might i ask why you use a jig with hooks at the top instead of an "butt" hook? I would think the butt hook would have a better hooking change?
@Billyfishing_watch
@Billyfishing_watch 5 ай бұрын
There are a few reasons why I fish the hooks in this orientation. The first is it does not hang up as often, the second reason is it damages the fish less often. You should remember that most fish feed by vacuum, and suck the entire lure into its mouth. So when you strike the hooks set in its mouth rather than in its throat. I changed to this method a few years ago, it is much more effective in all these ways! Thanks brother 😁👌

hi Billy, noob when it comes to fishing, I went fishing in Stavanger recently and managed to catch some Pollack from the shore.... but depending on where I went it was a bit hit and miss with a lot of locals mentioning depth and too shallow in certain parts...... do you have any advice regarding depth amongst other factors when short fishing with lures.... bare in mind, I am noob ... any advice greatly appreciated from any experienced folks... thanks
@Billyfishing_watch
@Billyfishing_watch 5 ай бұрын
Hi bud. In honesty there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to fishing! You can catch pollock from 30 meters down, or even on the surface! But they are generally in places where there is at least five meters of water or more! But these fish generally haunt along the edges of structure! They can be deep or shallow, so if they're not in the deep, then fish the shallow too. Thanks Brother 😁👌

So frustrating for you Billy. Losing all those big fish must have driven you nuts. Sound advice about how you’re going to land your fish. I fish my local pier regularly mainly because of my mobility problems and the amount of people who come and ask to borrow my drop net to land a good fish. Surely they know what they are likely to catch ie smoothound or rays and yeti they come unprepared. Don’t get me started. Catch you next time Billy 🐟🇳🇴

@Billyfishing_watch could you explain why, unless I’m misunderstanding, your leader has a high breaking strength then your main line. Wouldn’t flipping it mean minimizing lost tackle to snags and breaks? Not doubting your setup just trying to understand the setup a bit more. Thanks!
@Billyfishing_watch
@Billyfishing_watch 5 ай бұрын
Hi Mike. Leaders are always heavier than the main line. As an angler we tried to find the perfect balance! between casting distance, and durability. In this case the circumstances demanded this type of tackle. If you're suggesting a heavier mainline than a leader, what will happen is! You won't be able to cast so far. The current will pick up your jig and it won't sync to the bottom, you will also not have the distance to reach the fish. Or get enough line on the reel to be able to fish that depth of water. Hope this helps out, thanks Brother 😁👌

Hi Billy, would a long surf casting rod work to get them up quicker?
@Billyfishing_watch
@Billyfishing_watch 4 ай бұрын
No! The kelp shelf was too wide, and the deep water ran right up against it. What would have helped was some elevation. There is no room there for surf gear. And past experience the fish would have done the same thing anyway. They were not 10 lb fish! They were closer to 30 lb fish. It is even difficult to land them from a pier when they are this size. Thanks Brother 😁👌

@@Billyfishing_watch haha, i have never seen anyone jig like that, ive been fishing allot in sweden and norway, been on 100's of tourboats and stuff, closest thing to this is was a arabic man who went down into squat position and almost jumped up to pump his rod. Anyway im gonna give you a tip, A wiggler torsk or gnosjö, its a flat piece of shiny metall (theres with colours too) with a off-center wieght so when u pull it in a slow long pull it spins upwards in water and when u let it fall it will slowly dance from side to side and kinda slowfall and the fishes cant resist these type of lures, all scandinavic oldschool fishermen knows about these lures and exsisted for a very long time and u can take a rubber colourfull squid to pull over the hook if they want that, they come from 28g uptowards (what ive found and have) 600grams... if theres currently allot of small sej wich theres normally is in norway i suggest use the biggest 3wayhook in the box to get throu the scholl. Take it as you want becuse from my experience the fish your fishing (apart from makrill and salmon/trout) like it slow can bite at fast speeds sure but i think you missing ALLOT of fish doing it that way.. cheers and skitfiske!
