I really appreciated this video and enjoyed learning through watching. Thank you for posting. It would have been neat if you'd explained strategically why you were placing pieces as the game was progressing, but I do appreciate that you explained a bit of that in the end.

Another benefit to the beetle being on the opponent queen is you can potentially place pieces directly next to the bee :)

That is very true Warlord DK. If you manage to get your Beetle on top of the opponent's Queen placing pieces directly beside her is a great way to help surround her!

Hi Argon! We'd love to hear your strategies for Hive. What would you have done? Thanks a lot for the comment. Would definitely like to try out the pieces from the expansions!
@argonwheatbelly6373 жыл бұрын
@@AllAboardBoardgames : My strategy is relatively basic, with an initial spider deployment, and judicious use of ants. But the pillbug changes the tempo of the game. It provides a restructure of the total hive in a less-than-predictable way, since you can roll away key elements, and cause your opponent to spend more than a single move to regain the initiative.
@AllAboardBoardgames3 жыл бұрын
@@argonwheatbelly637 It certainly sounds like the pillbug can change the whole game and could pull the Queen out of some tricky situations! I'd like to try using it. I think it would add a lot to the game!

Thanks, very good playthrough and fun, approachable channel. I wanted to see more examples and slower movements for more movement clarity (particularly gap dropping pieces) but in general, I'd recommend this to new Hive players like myself. Thank you!

I'm new to Hive. I bought it about the same time you uploaded this. I loved this playthrough, it felt really honest. Will subscribe. My favourite piece so far is the beetle because it's a sneaky little devil 😉

Anaphase, thank you very much for your comment. We're delighted that you enjoyed the playthrough. Haha - yeah, the Beetle is indeed a sneaky little devil. It's great if you can get him on top of your opponent's Queen to block her from moving and then work on getting your pieces around her, dropping in the Beetle to fill in the final space!

I just got the game and my partner and I are loving it! I have a question: at 7:39 when you move your beetle down, can the queen bee move outside of that or is that an ilegal move?
@AllAboardBoardgames3 жыл бұрын
Hi MJ. Glad to hear that you are loving Hive! It's a brilliant game! As for your question, the Queen Bee is not able to move from that position. There is no space to move without pushing another tile out of the way. The pieces have to be able to move smoothly into the new spaces. Hope this helps!

I am learning to play hive and I learned much from you lovely video. One question though. I thought the move at 8:11 would be an illegal placement since its adjacent to the opponent's tile.
@AllAboardBoardgames3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph. Thank you very much for the compliment. It's great that our video is helpful to you learning the game! Glai moves her ant at 8:11, but it is not an illegal move because it was a movement, not a placement. The rules say that when you place a tile, it cannot be placed beside an opponent's tile, but you can move it later. Glai actually placed the ant around 6:21. I hope this helps!

I’ve always wondered what the point of the spider was when the ant seems objectively better than it and there are more ants than spiders.
@AllAboardBoardgames7 ай бұрын
The ant is certainly the most powerful piece in the game, but you need to be able to use the other pieces to your advantage too in order to win.

Thx your video. So, pieces not can move on table, before Queen Bee is on table? Can Beetle going up on Queen Bee? How high Hive can be?
@AllAboardBoardgames10 ай бұрын
Hello there. Thank you for watching our video. Correct - pieces cannot move on the table before the Queen Bee is placed. The Beetle can go on top of the Queen Bee and there is no limit to the height of the Hive. Hope this helps!

We just got hive and my wife and I are confused over the 'pieces must physically slide but only if they have enough room to do so without causes other pieces to move too'. Are you able to shed any light?
@AllAboardBoardgames2 жыл бұрын
Hi Owen. Sure, that rule just means that when you are moving the pieces into position there needs to be enough space for them to slide into. If you try to move into a space and you have to move a tile out of the way to get into the space, then it is an illegal move.

Can the beetle land on top of the queen???
@AllAboardBoardgames2 жыл бұрын
Hi Staci. Yes it can and it is a great way to trap the Queen so she cannot move.

Isn't it so that all the parts of the hive have to stay connected all the time? So the grasshopper shoudn't be able to jump away from the it's on hive and become separated.

If the beetle is on top of a bug can the bug still move? And can a beatle move on top of a beatle while its on another bug (3 pieces high)??
@AllAboardBoardgames3 жыл бұрын
Hello Samurai Scyther. Any piece under a beetle is trapped and cannot move until the beetle moves away from it. This is often used as a strategy to stop your opponent's queen bee from moving. There is no limit to the number of beetles that can be on top of each other. A beetle can move on top of another bug, then another beetle can move on top of the first beetle and so on. The beetle can move several levels up or down - it does not matter how high the pile is. However, when first placing a beetle, it cannot be placed on top of another bug. It must be placed on the table following normal placement rules. In the case of a pile of beetles, the tile is considered to be the colour of the top beetle for placement purposes. Hope this helps! :)

@@AllAboardBoardgames yup. And it's always nice to see symmetrical games. White and black pieces representing good and evil. Funny anecdote: The northern saints gave chess to the indians during the pilgrimage to the Camp back in the millennial reign, guided by their magnetic compasses, like every humble visitor and servant of the Lord that made an act of presence, bringing offerings as well. Take care and think things trough. For the earthly clock is ticking 😊 🙏

I still am just confused - I think this is such a strategy thinking game that if you could like carefully explain why you are placing each one - I have idea why you moved the ant there or the hopper there etc …
@AllAboardBoardgames9 ай бұрын
It is indeed a strategy game, but after a couple of plays you start to come up with ideas on how to surround your opponent's queen. Usually you place pieces where they will be easy to move into an attacking position to either surround the queen or stop your opponent from getting into a good position. You have to take into account the movements of the pieces when you place them to see where they can potentially move to - the ant can pretty much move anywhere, but the hopper for example, needs to be able to jump over another piece, or a line of pieces to get into position. The best way to learn this is to play it a few times and each time you play you will learn something new. Hope you enjoyed the video!

Can white actually move the queen on her last move instead of putting the spider to surround the black queen?
@AllAboardBoardgames2 жыл бұрын
河馬先生, no this is not possible because there is no space for the Queen to move out without pushing aside other pieces.
