I used one in high school and college in the late 90s. I had access to computers but really liked it. I think around 2000 I switched entirely from the word processor. Windows and Word had gotten pretty good by then and it made sense to just use a computer

Like my former computer instructress advised me that "with a personal computer (PC), you can do more," that fact makes me want to aim forward and never to look backward anymore.

I had 2 of these!! Even the same keyboard! 1 at home and 1 at schoo. It was sooo slow! Try spellcheck. Saving a doc took ~30 sec and printing gave vets flashbacks! I dumped the floppies I had my schoolwork on but haven't managed to read any of them. Man, that homing sequence noise just made me time travel! Unfortunately, I don't think I have the black disk that came with it. I vividly remember it. I don't even have the machine. If I find it, I'll update this.

I used one of these for many years while living in Mexico. Bought it at the Acapulco Walmart decades ago. Finally left if with schoolgirl when I returned to Holland. Before that I had a Philips Videowriter, but they quit making print tape cassettes for it. Now I would like to have something like an e-ink laptop.

Great video and you have given a very good overview of this typewriter. I was watching the most recent Technology Connections video about the correcting feature in typewriters (incl. these electronic ones) and became interested in looking up if I could find my old one. I think I have found it in this video. Those are so amazing machines. Btw, if you're still interested in the thing, I'm German and could probably help you out with the help screen/manual.

My favorite thing about this Brother word processor LW-30 is that its keys have an excellent touch like the IBM Wheelwriter. The LW-30 could complement my keystrokes. The LW-30 produces excellent print that is nearly identical to the typeset-quality of a laser printer. I hope you will be able to obtain more printer typeface daisywheel printheads to go with the 10-pitch Brougham typeface. If you cannot find anymore daisywheel typefaces, you may want to make a Dell microcomputer your keyboard, and a Canon printer your writer. Both can be helpful and handier do lots more for you so that you will not want to look backward.

I had one of these in high school and college. Printed a lot of papers on it. A US version with a different model number I can't remember but essentially the same. Thanks for making this video, it was fun to watch. Edit: Figured out what mine was, it was a WP-1400D. Had spell and grammar check. Pretty sure it did more than 11 pages and had a print preview where it would show the layout of the pages. Maybe a bit newer than this one, it would have been around 1992 when we bought it if I remember right. Pretty primitive by today's standards but hardly any of my classmates had their own computer back then, especially away from home in college. They would have to go to the computer lab to work or use a typewriter so it was pretty nice to have one of these. Then by 1995 or so everybody was getting PCs and these were gone not long after.

I think the LW-30 is the Swiss version of the WP-1400D. Also, if you still have the typing tutor / mail merge / spreadsheet app disks, I really want them! ...I did actually just use mine today to type out and print a letter, and they're still way better than a printer for putting addresses on envelopes.

This was great! Me in 1994 - Computers are for people with no friends, they'll never catch on, I hate them, I need a glorified typewriter (Sharp word processor) Me in 1995 - If a computer can do even more than my Sharp and most of my friends have them, I need a computer. I'm half way there already (I was nowhere near half way as I discovered when I tried to read the floppy discs I had saved and jump straight into Windows) Thank you for uploading the vid

i enjoyed your video very much. thanks for providing such information, i got a LW-35 from ebay today for very little money and in the meantime i am watching your video to get a first impression of what i can expect. i wonder if and how i can reasonably transfer the written texts to my computer or how the text files can be converted. i am also thinking of installing a gotek drive for the floppy drive. let's see if that works. so thanks again for your video!

It'll be a lot of work to use a Gotek --- this thing uses a completely nonstandard drive, pinout and format. You can read and write floppy disks provided you are willing to build or buy the hardware. cowlark.com/fluxengine/doc/disk-brother.html

@@hjalfi i understood from a german wikipedia article (see de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brother_LW-Reihe ) that the LW-30 model is indeed incompatible with anything but the later models (from LW-35 on, like mine) will use standard ms-dos format. so i was thinking a gotek could fit...

@@DirtboxJams Oops, sorry, got the 30 and the 35 mixed up. In which case you should be in luck. ...assuming the hardware inside is anything like the 30 apart from that, and you're into low-level Z80 programming, you might be able to port my LW-30 version of CP/M to it! cowlark.com/cpmish/

@@hjalfi i am actually not into low level z80 programming, i’m no programmer at all tbh ;) but i thought a brother LW machine would be a great way to finally have a distraction free writing solution which makes me feel like being a great novelist (or just to have a reason to turn off my computer screen). so thanks again for your video!

Hi. I uploaded a video of playing Tetris on my Brother LW-30. I thought you might find it interesting since you have the same model of typewriter.

Hey, I have got a brother lw 30 too. It is a great typewriter but I have tge same problem with it like this in your video: the Display has some white stains from inside. Do you know what this could be and how I could fix it??
@hjalfi
@hjalfi 3 жыл бұрын
I believe it's caused by delamination of the layers of the LCD, and isn't fixable. The only thing to do is to find another compatible machine, preferably a broken one, and swap screens.
@seno408

@@hjalfi okay. Maybe you have right and additionaly I think it is really complicated to open the Display. This is so constructed that you have no chance to disassemble it without to damage something. I tried it and stoped the work. The products of the 80s and 90s really great, I love them because they are from my childhood but they are build for a nuclear war.
