ECE 22.06 and FIM are the same safety funnily enough. Update: FIM has started stage 2 testing which is better than 22.06 as of the 2022 Moto GP season.

If you look at the HIC, standard linear impact and rotational impact force values between ECE 22.06 and FIM they're the exact same, however FIM do use a more realistic head form with a higher coefficient of friction thus simulate real rotational acceleration values better. So FIM although is great and its tests are up to top standard, is based on the raw values, potentially no better than some of the newer 22.06 helmets (shoei NXR2, arai rx7v evo, arai quantic, ruroc atlas 4.0 and a couple more...) (i think rotational threshold shouldn't be as high as 10,400 rad/s^2 for ECE and FIM, as typical TBI rotational acceleration studies show it should be closer to circa 7000, but I think FIM update their standard more frequently than ECE so thats a bonus) So hopefully with all the helmets moving towards 22.06 we will have helmets with race standard impact test values as standard.

Ngl, Brandon and Spurg are amazing reviewers here in Revzilla in regards to helmets and all the gears. But I do really wish, this review was Anthony Bucci. I already bought 5 helmets total thanks to his review since 2014 lol. Especially when he reviewed RPHA 11 Pro, it was da bomb! So much energy in his review. Joke aside from marketing and sale point of view. He was really excited about the brand and also the type of helmet and when he nominated RPHA 11 Pro as the best race helmet in 2017, I immediately bought it. No second thought..

would love to see a everyday/touring FIM option for regular riders who want to be safe as possible while still enjoying riding

fim is extremely, extremely hard to pass for a helmet, it's designed to test for race incidents at super high speed. Not really necessary for the street (not that its not a good thing to want) if you want a more comfortable street oriented helmet, that is also really safe, anything with the new ece 22.06 rating is going to be super safe, but a little less stringent allowing for more creature comforts on the street. I don't see a manufacture making a touring helmet with the fim rating anytime soon, it's just not necessary or worth the cost in most cases, the only helmets being fim rated are helmets already being tested for riders in wsbk, motogp, etc.

@@NoHope_ hey, the 22.06 and FIM actually have the same impact threshold values and test the same way, so 22.06 is actually the same safety as FIM regardless of speed. (275g linear impact at 8m/s, 10,400 rad/s^2 for rotational, HIC values are around the same) and BRiC (brain injury criterion) values are identical. The HIC values for ece 22.06 are actually slightly better in sample 2 testing. (Page 25 of ECE 22.06 standards) Otherwise FIM in its current stage 1 state is a little over glorified, but equally 22.06 is just really really good. So yea 22.06 helmet or FIM helmet, same safety based on actual impact values required to pass the test. :)

@@Fuzzbox1000 could you share some details about Ece 22.06 versus the Snell M2020 standard? My main debate is between the Shoei Rf1400 and the AVG K6. Shoei is Snell M2020 but not Ece (supposedly the euro version of the Shoei rf1400 is Ece cert so we’d assume it would pass ece if they wanted it to). On the other hand the AGV k6 is Ece but not snell rated. Just want the safer helmet but I’m sure I’m over thinking it and either premium helmet would be a great choice.

@@bigbrown2690 hey, thats a great question. From reading the Snell M2020D and M2020R files, I personally would still opt for the ECE 22.06 certified helmet (the K6 is only 22.05 as of now) I won't bore you too much with all the stats and figures and stuff but basically the snell testing doesnt take into account rotational acceleration which is a big no no because 70 odd percent of motorcycle head trauma deaths relate to the brain rotating relative to the cranium within the cranial vault, causing torsion of nerves and vessels etc and posing a more potent threat than more simple linear forces causing subdural haemorrhage etc (of which is what snell only tests for). ECE 22.06 and thus FIM both test for the rotational acceleration and incorperate brain injury criterion figures into their testing (BRiC) which is vitally important. Snell testing also means that the shell of the helmet is often too rigid and less flexible, thus reduces it's ability to dissipate the energy over a larger area of EPS foam, however the rf1400 actually has a very flexible shell which sort of negates this problem so don't worry about shell rigidity problem i just brought up with the shoei rf1400 because the shoei is actually great. (I think fortnine goes over this) In terms of the K6 as a helmet however, i have my own opinion on it based on the research i have read. Basically they have made the helmet lighter and in doing that have reduced the amount of EPS foam within the helmet. I understand they have compensated for this by adding multiple densities to it but i still don't believe reducing the thickness of the EPS foam in order to reduce weight is ever a good idea. None of the 22.06 helmets so far have done this and i can only assume for a good reason. Equally if you make a helmet significantly lighter, it needs to have a very low coefficient of friction in order to reduce rotational accelerations when it impacts the ground, this probably why we see typical FIM helmets actually around the 1400-1500 gram mark (like the HJC RPHA 1) not the 1200 odd gram mark that the K6 has. In saying all this, the key is to find the helmet shape that fits you best, and then finding the safest helmet with that shape. Fitment is really important so dont forget that. I work in a motorcycle apparel shop when not studying and the safest helmet we have (and that i have seen the best test scores from) is the arai RX7V evo, although incredible, is quite an acquired fitment thus difficult to get customers in, so can seldom sell them to a lot of people. If safety is the key, try go for something with 22.06 and or FIM, I'm sure that rf1400 would be very safe and they have a fantastic track record as well as some great shell technology in the rf1400, im unsure personally whether it is snell M2020D (snell and DOT) or snell M2020R (snell and ECE) but you did say you saw something saying it could be ECE somewhere? Where did you see that? Would love to learn more. If that is the case then thats awesome! But in saying all this, shoei is a fantastic brand, they make really good helmets and i would not be fearful in crashing in a rf1400. maybe also have a look at the shoei NXR2 as well, that one is 22.06 certified, but overall i would probably pick the rf1400 over the K6. Hope that rambling made sense :)

@@Fuzzbox1000 Hi Jam, much appreciate the great lengthy response and taking the time to do so! As an update I ordered the Shoei rf1400 due to the fitment feeling a bit more snug than the AGV I tried on. Could not find a HJC RPHA 1 to try on locally and thought about ordering that one also and seeing if that or the Shoei fit better and returning the one I didn’t like as much. For the Shoei rf1400 and the ECE certificate, it’s confusing - I’m going to email Shoei for their response but from what I’m seeing, the Shoei rf1400 is the EXACT same helmet as the Shoei NXR2. Nxr2 is for the Europe market, and rf1400 is for the American market. Nxr2 is ECE 22.06 certified (yay!) but the American rf1400 only displays the snell2020 instead…..logic is they are the same helmet so potential both snell 2020 and ECE 22.06 certified which would be awesome. However if it was also ECE certified why aren’t they advertising that here in America? It would certainly make the helmet more desired….Leads me to believe it’s either a slightly different helmet material in America - or it’s a certification game where Shoei isn’t required in America to do ECE testing and the ECE certification in Europe doesn’t mean it’s automatically transferred to their American helmet, unless they send the American version to the American ECE testing and since it’s not required, they save money and don’t do it? So overall the Shoei rf1400 is “potentially” ECE 22.06 certified and Snell2020 certified. I will update if Shoei responds on Europe vs.American helmet model and the certification gimmicks! Sorry for the rambling on this reply!

Just got it. The wider peripheral vision is great, the vents do an incredible job and the aerodynamics are so good, my ride home was amazing. Tho issues im having personally are the chin is close so the nose guard makes contact with my nose, i wouldn’t say i have a large or protruding nose so ive taken that out. The padding behind the ears are a bit sharp so if you have ears that poke out a bit then it may be annoying or even painful. Then an issue that isn’t because of my face is that the chin curtain is a bit wider than the part it attaches to so youll have a strange time putting it onto the small amount of fabric you are given. I went from a size M RPHA70 to the size M RPHA 1 and it was perfect. A small amount of pressure on my forehead that the 70 didnt have at all tho but nothing serious or painful
