I love the visual design of both the HK tanks and the HK aerials, they are really original. I don't know if Cameron had clearly thought out this idea, or it's just a coincidence, but I have a suspicion that Skynet intentionally gave them red and blue lights, similar to those of police vehicles. When rolling out the first versions of these killing machines, these lights could easily attract unaware humans, making them easy targets. Imagine walking through the ruins of a nuked city and seeing red and blue lights in the distant dark. "It's a police car, or a chopper!" you think, "Maybe they'll help me!". Nope, HK blasts you away as soon as you get within firing range.
@tristanbackup25366 ай бұрын
It's an in-canon reason so Skynet can keep secondary tracking between units within visual range instead of relying purely on radar & wireless tracking so other units can see it. Helps finding such assets also from satellites if the Resistance jams wireless-tracking live feed so Skynet & other subroutine systems fall back to using visual tracking with the red & blue lights to know where it is to send additional reinforcements to aid the tanks given how they are big targets. It's the same reason why planes today have flashing lights despite having tracking & radar systems making lights redundant, it's a fall back system so we can visually see it to know where it is if such systems fail which they can & had before.

one advantage the AI might see in mounting the HK tanks to the wall, is it cant go anywhere. the humans are operating asymmetrical warfare, so pulling units away from the actual target with distraction attacks was likely the norm for the humans. so the AI likely started with all mobile units, and then noticed that it couldn't adapt fast enough to the unconventional human tactics and was getting caught without units to fight them again and again. so they just made them immobile. cant be pulled out of position and will always protect the facility.

There's another possibility for that stationary/turreted HK tank in Terminator Salvation, perhaps it started out as a fully functional tank but took too much damage and was thus made to perform as a turret either until it could be repaired or Skynet didn't want to scrap it until it was a total loss.
@sigmacademy5 жыл бұрын
Could also be that as the Resistance inflicting more damage on the supply lines and assembly plants, SkyNet had to rely on more older and more numerous models and variants for in-depth defense and attack missions. More advanced models would take longer to create and roll out and you would need to use (and recycle) older units to fill the gap left because time and resources spend on more powerful units. :)

That image of the tracks grinding human bones to dust stuck with me as a kid, and is still powerful to this day. When it catches sight of that other fighter with Reese, and instantly obliterates her, it struck such fear into me that you just need to make one mistake and be seen, and these things will wipe you out without hesitation. The one thing that I'd like to know more about, regarding the tank and the Aerial HKs is, how intelligent are they? Are their CPU brains like that of a Terminator, do they "think", strategise, communicate with each other? Or are they simpler, more akin to sentry guns with a friend-foe target recognition system?

H-K tanks and Aerials, specifically the ones in the first and second movies (and some of the books and comics) can sometimes think for themselves when their "autonomous mode" is active, but Skynet rarely set them to that mode for the same reason as Terminators of the 800 series and up being set to "read only," it doesn't want them to do a lot of thinking. other than that, they're not to bright. usually, they're set to patrol an area, search and destroy, or defend a location. pretty much like worker bees, ants or hornets. interesting fact about the Aerial H-Ks of the first and second movies: they're design is based on hornets, they even have insectoid legs for when they need to land. though it was never shown in the movies, it was mentioned in the first Terminator book. H-K tanks can also access satellites for additional information of an area, or use them to detect Resistance bases and movements. they are built to have some communication with other units and even Skynet itself, being able to send terrain and targeting data to other H-K tanks, Aerials, and most Terminator models of the 600s series and up. the sensors of an H-K tank are razor sharp, but having searchlights in addition to those sensors proved to be a real problem for the Resistance. in the original timeline (and other timelines) the more advanced H-K units developed as the war neared its end would be able to link with each other as a hive mind. some H-K units, such as the Centurion, a fast moving four legged gun platform capable of raising or lowering its body, was a supercomputer itself. it moved around the battlefield, rising over terrain or buildings to fire at targets before moving to another location to fire again, or digging its legs into the ground and serving as a sentry platform.

In Terminator 3 the Redemption video game, the HK tank had been completely stream lined and retro fitted. Instead of a head and body on just one end of the tank, the body was placed dead center between the four treads on the frame of the tank. The head was removed, the body was made bigger and in the center instead of 2 praying mantis like arms, a massive plasma canon was added. So it had the two arms with plasma guns but a huge main canon that fired a huge single plasma blast. You even get to take control of one and its a great vehicle to kill other machines with.

You know, if Skynet is a super-intellgent AI, you would think it would know it would know you don't send armored vehicles into built up areas without infantry support (endoskeletons). I've defeated thermal imagers with a cardboard box, when I was working as a badguy in the nuclear security industry. It worked, but the plexiglass foldup contraption I built worked better. Then we built one that was camo painted to cover us in the visible light spectrum also, with a little viewport with a coat of matte clear-coat. So it was non-reflective. Then we made one with insulated handles, so we wouldn't heat it up with our hands, or have our fingers visible on thermal. After that one of my guys suggested carrying it in one of those nylon collapsing coolers, so it wouldn't differ from the background thermal signature. Next, we scalloped the edges and added fake plant stuff from an arts and crafts store. And it worked a trick. It was so effective we were ordered to stop using it. Which burned my butt, after how much time and effort we put into developing it. But as adversaries, we honed those good guys to a razor's edge. And by the time we had a graded 3-year evaluation from the Feds, we stopped the national adversary team cold. I think the only drill they actually breached the perimeter, the one dude made it, maybe, 15 yds, before he got smoke-checked. Everybody else was "dead" outside the wire. I did figureout, the math one time, and for about a 23 month period, something like 87% of drill-kills were adversaries playing bad guys vs adversaries playing good-guys. I was team commander by then, so I told my adversaries, "push out info to anyone willing to listen". Myself and my XO actually had the privilege of training with recently retired Delta guys, and we passed that info down to the regular officers who wanted to learn. I established a personal fund, out of my own pocket. "Best pistol score, best rifle score, best night fire score, best combat course score, etc., you get a $200 gift card. Charlie team's scores went through the roof. Even my slackers , who were like, "I won't win anyway, so why bother trying," gave it the old college try, and their scores improved dramatically. A little bit of leadership, a little positive reinforcement, and you can work wonders.

Didn't we see HK tank treads in the very first Terminator Salvation trailer? I remember cause seeing those treads got me so hyped and seemed like it was actually going to be like James Cameron's future war.

Now I want to play T2: The Arcade Game...look what you have done. Though Terminator on the Sega MegaCD was better.

@@Godzillafan1980 game is the stuff of legend. I actually still have the cart for Robocop VS. The Terminator. Feels good playing on actual hardware.

In T2 there were unused storyboards with an advanced HK tank that had a 4 legged chassis and greater intelligence

I'd say as far as efficciancy it makes sense to mass produce the top of the HK and use it both on the tank models and as stationary turrets.
@sigmacademy5 жыл бұрын
True. If you have dozens of variants to produce at the same time, you need different kinds of factories to produce different parts for a specific unit, not to mention specialized assembly lines. If you follow a simple army composition, you can have multiple factories creating the same or similar "troops/units" and adapt a simple basic chassis with an infinite number of combinations for specialized tasks; which means outnumbering and outgunning your opponent in the intermediate or long term future by simply flooding any battlefield with a never ending flood of reinforcements.

Skynet is at it's best when using a verity of models. Even tho there is only the HK and T series. The HK line is more flexible out of the two.

Big problem with the HK Tanks: their profile is much too high. They'll get better visibility than a conventional tank design, and they certainly look intimidating. But they're also an easy target for anyone with an RPG. Perhaps in the future, RPGs and other heavy weapons are rare enough that Skynet considers the trade-off acceptable.

I don't know that I agree that near future or future-possible sci-fi is the truest form of science fiction.
@sigmacademy5 жыл бұрын
The problem with far future or alternative future scifi is it can kind of drift so far away from scifi that it barely resembles scifi anymore - it becomes more like a hybrid of other genres with technological elements, like the classic later Planet of the Apes films.
@markdsm-51575 жыл бұрын
a fixed position HK Tank (should be called a HK turret IMHO) would be more cost effective without having to give it a drive train, batteries/dedicated power generator . Skynet could possibly produce up to 3 turret models for the same resource cost of one HK tank. Look at modern tanks, most of the tank is the hull, not the turret.

In the first movie, during the future war, right before Reese and his team heads into the underground bunker you can see at least 2 or 3 destroyed HK Tanks around the battlefield, almost blending in with the ruined buildings.

It's probably serving as either camouflaged cover for defenses, sentry towers or natural barricades against other HK tanks.

After their experience with urban battles, the Russians made their BMPT "Terminator", which had exactly the ability that tanks from the films are lacking: to engage targets on the rooftops. I guess, the hk tanks are easy targets when there're buildings around.

Idl0021 I hope he also covers the HK Spider that appears in Dawn of Fate and the two bi pedal machines that appear in Terminator 3 the Redemption, the FK Reaper and FK Titan.
