I own a PPQ. I finally had a chance to shoot the VP9 side by side with it for an extended period of time. My buddy and I tested and evaluated both. We agree it's close. I prefer the cosmetics of the VP9 ever so slightly, however we both felt every function (including accuracy) favored the PPQ by a small margin and trigger was a no contest win for the PPQ. If you didn't shoot them extensively side by side you'd be thrilled with either. However, just an opinion.... We both favored the PPQ definitively at the end of the comparison. Your results may vary.

@@gutadin5 PPQs that I have shot and owned in the course of training have eaten anything. I have switched guide rods, springs, triggers, all without a problem. A VP9 owned by one of my training partners had a lot of jams with lighter grain bullets until a long break-in with higher grain 9mm. Once it hit its groove it was also reliable. There are some good torture tests of both on other youtube videos. The VP9 didn't fair as well. Both are top notch guns, but I have experienced nothing to dissuade me from considering the PPQ to be one of the best mid-sized combat pistols available 10 years after its release. It should have gotten a significant amount more marketing and attention since day one but that is gun industry politics.

@@M3hammerdown Yeah, it's really strange how Walther continues to be a bit of a "dark horse" compared to the other brand-leaders in spite of Walther's history with the James Bond series, Hitler, etc. I own the PPS and the PPQ .45 SD and they are both what I'd call "super-guns" because of their overall ultimate quality. NutNFancy calls his Walther PPQ long-slide his "sniper pistol" because of its accuracy. The NutNFancy PPQ long-slide youtube video review is awesome btw. He always goes out into the high desert and does war games with all the gear he's presenting. He's worth subscribing to [and so is Justin Opinion IMO].

@zanelittlegray try a PDP. Best of everything. PPQ in .45 had more recoil than my other .45s, which was emphasized by the higher bore axis. That gun would be the outlier in the family that I would pass on. 9mm is not noticeable.

@@M3hammerdown I'd love to own a PDP. My next gun on my wish-list is the no-longer-made Beretta 950 Jetfire. It's only .25ACP and is a mouse-gun, but oh what a ton of fun it can supply! I'd also like to have a Walther PPK - not to carry, but because of the history behind it. But you're right, I definitely need to try the PDP. Who knows, eventually Walther might offer it in .45 like they did with PPQ.

I own both guns and love both. I'll never get rid of either gun. I like them that much. Sold my M&P and XDM after shooting these two. I honestly shoot the VP9 slightly better as of now. The gun you shoot better should be the gun you choose if you only plan to own one of these two quality firearms. You really can't go wrong with either one!

Great job of comparing and contrasting these pistols. I bought both the PPQ and VP9 within a month of one another, but kept the PPQ and sold the VP9 four months later. I think the PPQ 's trigger was the deciding factor for me. It appears my PPQ trigger might have less pre-travel than yours, and combined with the lighter pull and short reset, the PPQ always performed better for me than the VP9 on paper targets . I actually like the looks of the VP9 better and appreciated the minimal recoil and flip compared to the PPQ. Also, I really liked the charging handles and the smaller European mag paddles and hope that more manufactures start implementing both. I would buy a smaller version of the P9 should H&K manufacture one similar to the newly released smaller P30 design.

If you look at the back straps of each gun, the VP9's hump sits a little higher, giving you a quicker higher grip and better control and softer recoil on shots, where the trigger breaks is also a plus for the VP9. My duty weapon is a Glock 22 and edc is the g19, I have the PPQ m1, M&P9, G17 and FNS 9, the VP9 is the best gun I've shot of the group. If it was the same size as my G19 it would be my edc. FYI there are plenty of torture test on Glocks failing, they have never failed me, neither has the VP9. If you want to film a torture test, and you try hard enough you will get any gun to look bad.

The important dimension for trigger reach is the dimension at the break. That’s where you’ll see the difference with the PPQ pulling further to the rear before it breaks than the VP9. It’s subjective but for me, having the trigger break further forward increases my accuracy/ precision. The farther back I have to pull the trigger the more chance I’m going to pull to the left as a right hand shooter.

I have owned my PPQ M2 Navy since August 2014 and have lost no love for it. I have handled and dry fired the HK VP9 (After asking permission at the gun store first of course) and really like the ergonomics and trigger on the VP9. I do like the trigger reset slightly better on the PPQ but the VP9 is still awesome. I really hope that H&K comes out with a HK VP45. I used to own an HK45 (not USP model) and loved everything about it except the cheap feeling manual Safety/Decocker and "spongy" trigger. I would buy a HK VP45 in a heartbeat if they ever release it.

I've owned the VP9 (sold it) and I currently own the PPQ M2 Navy. I simply don't see how the VP9 is the "better" or "higher quality" gun that some folks purport. In fact, I am of the opposite opinion. Firearm preference is certainly no objective measure; however, the trigger pull on the PPQ is noticeably smoother and has a much shorter reset. Also, I, for the life of me, cannot understand how HK thought their cheap right-side slide stop was a good move. Ambidextrous features are good in theory, but I think HK failed to execute on the quality that their brand suggests (much like the loose fitting levers that permeate their current line-up). It looks and feels like an afterthought. In my opinion, the Walther PPQ supersedes the VP9 in design and quality. To each his own, though. I'm sure this comment will rustle some feathers. With all of that said, I'm considering giving the VP9 another go. In no way do I think it is a "bad" gun. I just expected more, I guess.

+Wells Bibo I agree with you. I bought the VP9 due to internet reviews. I found it to be inferior to the Walther PPX. The PPX is just 1 step below the PPQ in Walther's line. I'm getting rid of the VP9 & getting the PPQ in either 9mm or 45ACP. The PPX trigger is like heaven. It is soooo smooth & crisp there is nothing compatible. Word has it that the PPQ is just as good or even better. VP9 is the inferior weapon. I agree with Wells Bibo.

I have both pistols. I've had my PPQ for nearly 2 years and I just picked up my VP9 yesterday. My initial impressions is that the PPQ has a MUCH lighter trigger break, but the reset is very close. The VP9 had some creep at first, but after dry firing it a bit, the creep is going away. The PPQs break is like breaking a VERY thin icicle. Whereas the VP9 is like breaking a big, fat carrot. Both are crisp, but the PPQ is the clear winner in trigger. Granted, the VP9s trigger will break in more the more I shoot it. So, I won't cast too much judgement at this point. The PPQ also feels a tad more comfortable in hand to me, but I haven"t played around with the grip combinations for the VP9 yet, so my opinion may change on that. The one area I believe the VP9 wins though, is build quality. The VP9 just seems to be slightly better made. It's more tight for sure. All in all, both are great and I can't say which one I prefer until I have some range time through the VP9. Thanks for your review Justin!

SIG-504 Funny, because someone recently mentioned that "people were saying" the VP9 wasn't up to the normal H&K quality... and I disagreed with that. I think they are both very well manufactured - I see your point about the VP9, but it's a close call. Thanks for the comments!

I agree with you. I have experience with a P2000 and a USP. The VP9 seems every bit as solid as those. I think some die hard HK fans look down on it simply because of the economical price tag. It's trigger is certainly an upgrade to most other HK pistols. FWIW, interestingly enough, I also own a Walther P99 AS and the build quality on my example of one, is just about equal to the VP9 IMO. It's just a little tighter than the PPQ. It's really a subjective thing though as they are all superb. Keep up the good work!

There are many personal preference aspects of a firearm (best trigger reset, most ergonomic grip, weight, trigger pull, sexy looks, etc.) However the benefit of VP9-Polygonal rifling over PPQ-conventional “lands-and-grooves” rifling as far as quality is that Cold-hammer forged barrels are made from CANNON grade steel with polygonal rifling are more durable, stronger, easier to clean, and retain their accuracy much longer than any other barrel. Awesome! I've been waiting for you to do this comparison and you didn't disappoint. Great job. I do have a couple of questions though, and pardon me if I missed the info as I was making breakfast during part of the video. First, do you notice a difference in recoil, recoil pulse, and/or muzzle flip? Second, do you feel one grip is grippier than the other? I know you mentioned the swells were helpful on the PPQ, but I know some reviewers felt the VP9 was more aggressive. In other words, does the texture or shape give the advantage to either pistol? Lastly, I understand you'd be equally happy, confident, and effective using either pistol, but if you were going to split hairs, and consider what Nutnfancy calls first and second kinds of cool, and the government was going to take all your guns away save for one pistol--and it had to be either a VP9 or a PPQ--which one would you, as subjective of a choice it may be, keep and why? lol

Agreed! I’m blessed enough to own both, a Walther Q5 March and an HK VP9 Match. The Q5 was a dream gun for me, it is superb in every way. But then I got my hands on the VP9. Stylistically the VP9 Match wins hands down. It might be the extra 1/2 inch of barrel and those beautiful slide cuts. After using the stochastic texture on the VP9, I find the texture of the Walther a bit comical - but both are fine. The Q5 is an extremely accurate machine. The VP9 is a superbly accurate machine! Again it might be because of that extra 1/2 inch barrel and added site radius. I find I also prefer the paddle release on the. VP9. And of course there is nothing like the Walther trigger. Anyone should be pleased to own either of these pistols. Just my opinion … the VP9 Match is struggling tp become my favorite, and I think it’s winning ground.

VP9 is having better grip adjustability: back sides and side panels are replaceable. There are three sizes of them available. What's important regarding the side panels is that you could install them in different sizes at different sides of your gun. Say: a large side panel at the right side and a small, or medium one at the left. This way you could make excellent VP9 grip to be very hand-filling and unique.

Excellent comparison my friend, the best video comparison out there. Two things I would like to mention, you know from our previous correspondence that I own a ppq m1 classic, paddle mag release since 2011 and when the vp9 came out rented one and did an extensive comparison. Walther still produces the m1 classic paddle mag release version and it is available, and you forgot to mention that the other Walther mags you found are extended and are 17 rounds mags as there are only 15 round mags available for the vp9. My conclusion was that both are extremely high quality German made pistols that will both serve you well , and this debate will simply come down to preference. In my opinion the ppq has a better trigger and better and shorter reset, the vp9 had slightly less muzzle flip. So seeing as you can get them both with the paddle mag release, those are the only significant differences between the two pistols. Again which ever one you choose you will be well served. For me I prefer my ppq ,and I am well vested in mags and other gear and simply prefer the trigger and reset of the ppq. Thanks for posting such an excellent comparison video.

ACMAGNUM1 Thanks for the great comments. Actually, the magazine I showed for the PPQ is still just a 15-round, but has an extended baseplate on it. Justin Opinion Correct, the m1 mags will not work in the m2. That is one reason why I would not buy the 5 inch m2 ,because I have a lot of m1 mags, 15 and 17 rounders. Myself and others who really prefer the m1 paddle mag release wish Walther would make a ppq m1 5 inch for those 2 reasons , previously purchased a ton of mags and mag release preference. Someone had previously commented about the BT guide rod, yes, I replaced mine and the small weight difference does slightly help reduce the muzzle flip. I truly do love my Walther ppq m1 classic in 9mm.

In the polymer world I am definately a GLOCK dominated guy and own 19 GLOCK pistols covering most of their lineup. I also own 3 S&W M&P pistols. I am going to buy "something" else to add to them in the future. I've read and watched all kinds of reviews on the Walther PPQ M1 and M2 with nothing but praise given to them. I was pretty sure how my decision was going to go until I saw and handled both a M1 and M2 this last weekend at the gun show. To my supprize they were "clunky" built and didn't fit my hand worth a damn. Granted I haven't fired one yet, but this initial impression didn't impress me much being a GLOCK and M&P owner already. The HK VP9 sitting near them on the other hand did. It felt much much better and looks better too. HK build quality was top notch so no worries there either. I also think the resale value and customer support with the availability of parts will be better on the HK. I haven't fully made up my mind for sure yet, so I am not going to buy either until I do. However at the present time it is leaning more towards the HK VP9. I just think it is a better overall pistol in general from what I have seen and discovered so far. One thing is for sure, BOTH of these pistols have some pretty big shoes to fill when compared to the tried and true GLOCK line of pistols. I've been a GLOCK owner and shooter since the early 1990's. I had 8 S&W M&P pistols and am down to just 3 now. The other 5 didn't hang in the same league as my GLOCKs, so I sold them off keep only the 3 that have proven themselves as stellar examples. GLOCKs don't vary nearly as much as other pistols do from "great" to "good" to "bad" to "lemon". They are pretty consistent and you rarely get one with a lousy accuracy problem that can't be corrected by adjusting sights. The others.....hmmmm.....you take your chances and pay your money rolling the dice. It's a gamble and also why I rarely ever buy used guns secondhand. Someone unloaded that firearm for a reason usually. I also keep that in mind when considering buying one used. Unless I am pretty confident the owner was just in a financial "situation" and had to sell for "financial" reasons....I usually just PASS!! Let some other guy buy your lemon or turd..........

Years later and HK still hasn't made the smart move to offer a button mag release version like Walther did. Not saying it's the right choice, but people like options. Walther was very smart to offer the M2 version. I tried both side-by-side and ended up with what I personally believe to be a superior product and thankfully had the option to get the M2 button release which i prefer.

PPQ for me simply because the VP9 is a bit too big for what I'd need it for. I want a ~G19 sized gun and the PPQ just barely fits that profile. The VP9 is a hair too big. It's fractions of an inch, but it makes a difference. The PPQ also has a better trigger.

HK is definitely on to something with those charging paddles. However FN did it earlier with the 5.7. But HK made it "optional", because the paddles can be removed isn't it? It's a fine touch of innovative production.

i just got the ppq m2 long slide... that is the best striker fire trigger I've ever fired... my only gripe is the grip isn't quite as long as i would prefer; but that was remedied by purchasing Walther's 15+2 mags with the grip extension... well make that 2 gripes, because those mags were $45 a piece; but hk mags can run double that... i actually traded my vp9 to purchase the ppq m2...

vtec1277 I think the PPQ is ever-so-slightly snappier in terms of felt recoil and muzzle rise - but on such a small scale that I still consider them pretty equal in that regard. It is also somewhat subjective because different gripping styles will make a difference.

I believe you should buy firearms that have similar controls, in comparison Glock and the PPQ M2 have similar mag releases, if you train with one type of firearm its best to stick with firearms that have similar controls, in a stressful situation that could mean the difference between life or death! If you pull the mag out of each firearm and turn each firearm upside down you will see a major difference, the polymer walls are considerably thicker on the grip of the PPQ around the magwell as where HK seems to have skimped in that area, yet the PPQ is slightly is lighter. The PPQ M2 can use 15rd or 15+2rd mags, VP9 has 15rd capacity. More welds are visible on the VP9. The locking block area of the VP9 is clearly stamped and welded at the seams. The PPQ uses a solid, one piece machined locking block for their system, additionally, the VP9 uses a number of spot welds to attach its components. The Slide Release shows the first of these welds at the joint. The PPQ M2 uses a bolt so tell me again who ran out the door on a Friday...lol. There is a lot more going on in the guts of the VP9 trigger system, there is twisted wire inside attached to the trigger bar as where the PPQ uses a much simpler Glock like design and much more end user friendly to work on. VP9 is a bit "blocker" than the PPQ M2 so I think the PPQ M2 has a sleeker design. The PPQ M2 rear sight has a shelf so if you lose the use of one hand you can use it to rack the slide with a finger or against a surface instead of the "ear" system that the VP9 uses. VP9 cost slightly more than the PPQ M2. While I'm not dissing the VP9, IMO the PPQ seems to be a bit better quality and overall engineered a bit better. If you need to have something major done to the HK good luck finding a certified HK gunsmith. Both are made in Germany and are fine reliable handguns though. Thats my two cents...

+Oscar Delta I believe that this operator bull is just that, bull. I can pick up either of my carry guns, a PPQ M2 or my PPS with paddle release, and never even have to think about the magazine release. Personally I prefer the paddle and never felt any kind of learning curve. There is no difference in mag change speed either. The other thing is that if you need to have a magazine change in a life or death situation, outside of wartime, then you probably (99.999% of the time) should have made a better choice in what situation you have place yourself into. That said I agree that the PPQ is a higher quality gun that outperforms the VP9 for a slightly lower price.

How am I a keyboard commando when l say that a feature on a pistol is intuitive and that l dont subscribe to the "operator" crap. Or that avoidance of an adverse situation is the best option. I think you have misinterpreted my statement. Not to memtion that wishing an ill fated situation on someone is seriously uncool.
@oscardelta1257
@oscardelta1257 8 жыл бұрын
Sweater Dood My reply post said nothing about wishing an ill fated situation, you have a reading comprehension problem... Of course avoidance is always best unfortunately that isn't always an option AND if someone did have a need to use more than one magazine in a stressful situation and unless YOU have personally been in a stressful situation how in the hell are YOU going to know if YOU or another person will not fail to eject a mag by reaching for the wrong area to eject it? According to what YOU said, people should only have a need for one magazine because no one will ever need to load a spare magazine in a firearm unless they are in a war zone...I assume by your post you only carry one magazine then... Nothing in my original post even remotely suggested about people needing to be an "operator". A good portion of people go to the range to train and build muscle memory in the event they may actually have to use their firearm to defend themselves or others, however, if a situation occurs out in the real world, its not going to play out like being at the range AND that was the point of my post but YOU took as "operator" BS...I hope you never have test your theory in a real situation...

I have vp9 tactical gift from wife brother has 3 we both shoot competion. Plus I'm an leo instructor and been to many schools I slightly prefer it for accessories plus metal sights. But I also own ppq 5 inch again wife knows I like long slides. We estimated the ppq to be 1 lbs lighter but hk crisper. Now to m1 or m2, as instructor I teach shoot with them plus other instructors. I like the paddle release but have seen under stress some accidental discharges with it. Unless you really train and work with one real platform... I believe trigger finger has one job. Swat s.r.t and other trigger pullers not an issue. But hey its reliable I shot 100 rounds yes it's an issue. I should note my duty guns are ed brown and nighthawk but as instructor I must be good with other platforms. Walther will not compete for contracts or advertising versuses hk new headquarters in u.s. both beat glock or s&w or xd in my opinion. But buy a glock you want aftermarket or holsters no comparison I'm also a ffl I sell more hk vp9 guns by just saying play with them. What I'm mad about why no u.s. company listens and competes. I want good trigger accurate reliable and fits my hand. You want 1911 heres many. Oh heres an varying quality plastic fantastic and we blued it... um bluing doesnt equal reliable nonrustung. Its frustrating s&w could build it but doesn't but walther or glock here it is despite being in countries no guns self defense and hard to get.

One thing you failed to mention is the narrowness of the handgrip near the top. From the video, the VP9 is quite a bit narrower there, the PPQ does not have this. I am, right now, a fan of the PPQ, however, I do need to compare them both. I think I'll go with PPQ because of the trigger. PPQ also has a 5" barrel version.

Many firearm related channels on KZbin aren't and many are too subjective due to their "fanboy syndrome", which is quite annoying, at least to me. Keep up the good work and thank you for your efforts in order to produce quality content for firearm enthusiasts. I own a PPQ, gen. 1 and I am on the verge to get a VP9.
