A couple things: 1) It's much easier to work on this if you remove the motor (with two blue wires) in this area is not in the way. With a small flathead screwdriver, GENTLY pull back on the single, FLAT (not the two angled ones) BLACK plastic tab touching the WHITE center of the motor spindle. While doing this pull up on the motor and it will come right out. 2) The fix proposed here is going to disable the printer from doing a manual feed. This is because the purpose of that "white tab" is to tell the printer that the auto feed paper tray is closed. The paper tray has a tabe that pushes this white tab in and that in turn pushes the gear up so the front roller (the one that pulls paper from the auto feeder) can pull sheets. When you pull the tray out the spring is SUPPOSED to push the WHITE tab back effectively cutting off the function of the auto feeder. So, if you remove this spring and push the tab in so the gears are always engaged the printer is ONLY ever going to be fed from the auto feeder. You are forcing your printer into auto feed mode. If you lost your spring then this might be the only option. If it's still there you should set it up so that it pushes the tab back toward the front of the printer when the paper tray is pulled out. 3) Make sure to lay the printer with the side you are working on facing UP because if you disengage the white tab from the gears it can fall right out (yes seriously) and it is not fun to try and get it back in (guess how I know). Hope this is helpful to someone.

More importantly is to understand how that white tab is kept from shifting while pushing in the tray. Everyone's problem is that the tiny arm on the tray side of the white tab has warped or broken off and keeps sliding off the rail when inserting the tray. The spring is to the left so naturally it gets pushed in that direction. Hooking the white tab onto that smiley face shaped slot so it doesn't shift away from the tray is the key. No need to remove the motor. Am I a mechanical engineer? No. Just a college dropout using amphetamines to treat his ADHD who had five minutes to spare. Okay ten. It took me ten minutes to find the root of the problem. But without you and the creator of this video it would've taken me at least a few hours. Thank you.

A thank you to you. I was able to get the white tab back into place and the printer is working fine now. Once the tab seemed to be in the correct position I inserted the paper tray while the printer was on its side and the side panel still off and was able to ascertain that the gear was pushed up and engaged. When I removed the tray, the gear dropped back down. Thank you for your clear explanation.

This worked easy. Yeah it disables the manual feed but I never use it anyway. It's a $4 laser printer that should do what I need until it dies. Great explanation. Flat head will do this quick. I just shoved a small piece of paper folded a few times so it was thick enough. Worked instantly.

Many thanks for this video--I had some important documents to print and this worked a treat. Hey - wow, this fixed my printer. Specifically in my case, the upper gear seemed to be recessed into the printer and therefore not near the outside where it can engage with the lower gear. (The upper gear transfers drive from the motor to the pickup rollers). I found it was helpful to remove the small metal panel (embossed with "5" just above this area, that give me much better visibility into this area). In addition to the wedge technique described in the video, I found I had to pull the upper gear towards me to help with the engagement, also with then wedging to hold in place. The weird thing is, once I had everything lined up, and did a test print, my wedge popped out, but the printer continued to work. With the #5 panel removed, I could see there is some sort of spring behind the upper gear, that seems like it is supposed to keep this engaged - perhaps there's some sort of lockout that disengaged.

Nice video - did not have this problem but had paper from tray just starting to feed then stopping or not picking up at all- cleaned all rubber rollers including tray rollers and underside foot/kick rubber roller but still did not work - found that the rubber/foam pad just next to the roller in the front of the paper tray was not giving enough friction to the foot roller that kicks/picks up the paper and pushes it into the 2nd set of rollers - added a small piece of electrical tape (cut neatly with scissors) on top of this pad to get it thicker and it started picking up perfectly.

Thank you! This worked for me :) I used a standard 2x2 Lego brick to wedge behind the grey flap so it kept the two gears engaged. Presumably the gears must be able to disengage for a reason so perhaps another function won't work now? However, basic printing capability is restored!

In the video I show the left gear and the right gear which needs to engage the left gear. After i shot this video i pryed the left gear foward with my screwdriver and the left gear popped forward and sort of locked into place and started turning automatically so if you pry the left gear forward pull the screw driver out of the way quickly if the gear starts spinning quickly like mine did. I think the brother printer sensed it was in position after i pulled the left gear towards me with the screwdriver and started turning the gears.
