Get yourself the Leeming luts. So simple to use. Expose at Zebras 75% with V LOG 90% with HLG and 100% with Cine D apply Lut and done. Very easy to use and you can use all 3 profiles together for a project and the colours match perfectly and way better than Panasonics own profiles to Rec 709 luts.

Nice, thank you for the tip. I've stubbornly stuck to V-log L and haven't touched HLG since this video. Occasionally use Cine-D if I'm working with others who prefer it (or don't have the Vlog upgrade)

@@PhillipRPeck I have done a few tests and so far V LOG L seems the best. I have been told it occupies a wider range than Rec 2020 although I don't know for sure. Honestly the Leeming luts are amazing. I wouldn't use V LOG for vlogging for example as there is too much going on and not sure how well it would work with auto exposure like AP but for things you can control it really is a case of expose to the right with your zebras apply Lut and done. Maybe adjust some things dependant on the scene and you are good. All the info is on his website including instructions and I am not affiliated with him just a happy customer!

@@JoeMaranophotography Thank you for the suggestions. I would like to check it out. I've been using the GHAlex Lut for my KZbin channel, but it seems more of a stylized look than a regular log to rec709 conversion

Thanks for the video. Nice to hear your thoughts and so great comparisons. I am now almost always shooting V Log - 422 - I’m finding it’s what most clients wants / the 10bit gives lots of creative freedom and there is good dynamic range. Getting into colour is like Pandora’s box - big rabbit hole indeed

Thank man, in all honesty, I've never shot HLG after making this video. I just prefer Vlog. The stuff on your channel looks great! Whatever you're doing is working

@@PhillipRPeck thanks ! Ya HLG I don’t think fits the market much personally. Appreciate the kind words! Most my work on YT is 8bit 420 - I’m about to start publishing my 10bit. - but I mostly use YT for creative experimentation and fun :-)) all my work projects are else where for now All the best! Thanks again for your time and video :)

Regardless of the technical details, just really interesting, dynamics shots. It's easy to tell that you're thinking and experimenting

Thanks for this video. Very hard decision lol. I usually use CinelikeD for 8bit and low loight situations and Vlog for 10bit. Never tried to rec in HLG.

No problem. I never used HLG again after making this video! Pretty much Vlog all the way for me or whatever clients and collaborators want to use

Thank you for the test. I'm betting that HLG has as much dynamic range as v-log, but you need to use the highlights option on Davinci Resolve (the full version, that supports 10 bit). There are two highlights options there (unfortunately both called "highlights" so many people confuse them), one is similar to the one you used with curves, and the other one is an algorithm that extracts as much dynamic range out of the h.264/5 stream. I'm using that second option all the time with Cine-D on my GX85, and I get plenty of highlights that way (also helps to bring highlights to - 5 in-camera -- a lot of people suggest against it online, but to me, it brings a lot of detail to the footage). I don't think Premiere has a similar option though.

Thank you for the information. I will have to look into that. Definitely a lot more options for displaying color information in Resolve than in Premiere. I agree that there is probably no difference in dynamic range, what I showed in ny footage was negligible and might have been the difference of a wispy cloud passing by

There is a HDR highlights tick box in Lumetri panel that you can use. Be keen to see if the barn door comes back in after a HDR tweak. 😉
