Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore near Munising, Michigan holds many great ice climbs, Dairlyand being the biggest, The Dryer Hose being the most popular, but none of the other climbs compare to HMR or I like to call it now, the Michigan Monster!
-
With Lake Superior being unfrozen to Grand Island (01/29/23), the larger and some taller climbs along its shores are unreachable, so join Ed and I on our adventure to check off HMR, an elusive climb that was completed by snowmobile, skiing, and hiking!
-
01/29/23
Start Time: 11am at Trailhead
End Time: 8:30pm at Trailhead
Still had to drive snowmobile in and out ~10 min

Very nice route and location :) 100% agree correct to top rope it. A fall into that water is certain death.

It truly is an amazing route! I’m only in my 3rd season of ice climbing, so top roping this was my only thought for now, but hopefully I’d be able to lead it one day! - In colder years, a shelf of ice forms under the climb, which makes it possible for people to belay from the bottom, after approaching by walking on Lake Superior from Chapel Beach to the climb! In the guide book, there’s a photo of a group climbing it with a hanging belay as well, so people do lead it every so often!

I’ve ice climbed once in Switzerland. I hated it! 😂 I didn’t even have a deathly cold Great Lake underneath me. Impressive winter adventures!

I watched them all haha, this was my first ice climb of the season and I am definitely rusty, so just need more time on the tools! Thanks for the watch!

Sick video. Why are there two ropes in the system? They also look thin. Are you climbing on two half ropes?
@AnOccasionalAdventurer
@AnOccasionalAdventurer Жыл бұрын
Hey Joe, thanks for the watch and the nice words! You are correct, the 2 ropes are half and twin rated, the reason for using them was to split up some weight between the 2 of us for the approach and they were the only dry ropes I own haha, so we just used what we had available!

Bit of an anti climax with the climbing. Only saw the last 6 meters that was top roped

Hey thanks for the watch and the feedback! My videos are more about the overall adventure versus how hard I climb, but I do agree I didn't capture the climbing section that well in this video. I think I have improved on this since then, maybe watch one of my most recent videos where I believe I have improved on capturing the ice climbing part of these adventures!
