another point you might find interesting; when a Naval ship is engaging a target you do not fire the guns one by one, you fire all of them at once. The guns are trained onto the target by the radar (before it was optical) range finder and then the point of aim for the convergence of all the shells was calculated on a mechanical computer called a "Fire Control Table" In a ship like Belfast this would mean you could times the explosion of each of those single rounds by 12. This would be felt throughout the ship as you can imagine. A well trained set of gun crews could pump out these salvoes at a tremendous rate of fire. To bring all guns to bear on a target it was sometimes necessary to weave the ship, this is called opening the guns "A-arcs" of fire. I would have loved to set off all of those forward 6 guns at once as in 6X6 but Health & Safety wont let us reload. It did however guarantee there wasn't a pigeon to be seen for hours after.

@@Kevin-mx1vi It was not unknown for ships to be damaged by the recoil of own artillery firing. Happened to Nelsons for example (if you look at Rodney against Bismarck it was forced to fire half-salvos). With Belfast being old and probably not in pristine condition, there may be a reasonable fear for its structural integrity if all 12 guns were to be fired at once. Nothing unreasonable here.
@onyxdragon11793 жыл бұрын
@@Kevin-mx1vi Belfast is an old warship that can have a hidden defect on its guns, which despite the maintenance they receive because of their age it's kind of risky to fire them. It's like that case of one of the Iowas turrets suffering an explosion that killed some guys, or an M18 Hellcat that got 2 guys killed after they tried firing it and something blew up inside the cannon breech. It's not about being wimpy; it's about about avoiding situations like these.

the firing of these guns was organised by me to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day. The event in the ship took place on the 5th of June, the day the invasion fleet sailed, that evening, for the invasion beaches of Normandy. It was attended by representatives of many of the Allied nations. The firing of the guns, the very same guns that were used to open to bombardment on the morning of 6th June 1944, was carried out for us by the special effect company MTFX working with the conservators of the ship. I hope we will do the same in 2015 for Victory Day, May 9th. Tim Lewin, Vice President HMS Belfast Association.

They were pyrotechnics; we have to be careful with the fabric of the ship not to create excessive kick or resonance through the hull. We used to use the saluting cannon with reloadable brass cartridges which make approx. the same sound but as the cannon was bolted solid to the desk they gave quite a reverberation in the compartments below. The six-inch naval guns like these in the Belfast do not really use cartridges as such, the shell is loaded separately and then the cordite which is in a fabric bag tightly packed is loaded behind it. The charge and bag are completely blown away when the gun is fired, unlike the 4" and standard 4.7" guns used in destroyers, and for HA/LA defence which used brass cylinders. Actually if you fired one of these guns with just the charge and no shell the noise would be rather less, not more! what you hear in the clip is pretty close to the real thing altho there are not many people left who can remember..

@timlewin34117 жыл бұрын
true Belfast has 12 main guns, unfortunately we were not allowed to fire those aft (at the back, X & Y turrets) as these are immediately above the public entrance, health and safety and all that. When a warship engages a target, usually another ship, first of all it is often so far away as to barely visible with the naked eye, secondly, the captain will "swing" the ship to bring all guns to bear on the target, called the "A" Arc, and then shoot, you don't say fire in the Navy, the full broadside as fast as you can before swings away to present the smallest profile for return incoming shells. The concussion of the guns is felt throughout the ship, glass, crockery, fittings are often broken by shock if not stowed correctly. The blast and pressure wave is tremendous. Some of you ask about Warspite (15") my father was in s sister ship, Valiant, in 1939/41 when Valiant loosed off a broadside with her X&Y turrets trained too far forward, the blast wave reduce several of her wooden boats to matchsticks. I am not surprised by the report of the blast wave shattering bridge windows. bigger guns did not use brass cartridges, the explosive material was packed into a fabric sausage rammed in behind the shell, without the shell it would probably not make as much noise as the pyrotechnics we used.Expensive, but great fun, and even better to see how much people like you all get pleasure from watching it again.
@toddf93214 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim. What you say is very true. I have the pleasure of being in the US Navy and saw, heard, felt the power of a 16" Naval Rifle being fired. I am not sure what type of charge was used on the HMS Belfast in the video clip, but the people are saying it was load...I can very well image a war-shot being discharged. All the windows nearby would be damaged for sure.
@paulwood58033 жыл бұрын
Have to correct you slightly there Tim.... Opening the 'A' Arcs describes manoeuvering to bring the maximum number of AA (Anti-Aircraft) guns to bear on a target, for the main battery firing at a surface target you would open gun arcs.

My grandfather served aboard HMS Rodney that was the battleship that largely takes credit for sinking the Bismarck and also shelled the beaches on D-Day. It had the heaviest main guns in the Royal Navy at the time. My grandfather was a Petty Officer in charge of one of the secondary turrets and suffered tinitus for the rest of his life as a result. He said that in the final hour of the battle the HMS Rodney was so close to Bismarck that they were firing flat shots line of sight. At that trajectory its 9 x 16 inch main guns was so powerful that the blast and recoil of its own guns actually damaged the HMS Rodney itself. The shells went straight through Bismarck.

This is the ship nearly sheered in two from what I remember. A sort of monster risen from the dead so to speak. Amazing ship who fired the first salvo of gunfire at the Normandy coast I’m sure I read somewhere.

@@alwoodsmodellingmayhem like the Wiki link I just supplied, maybe you need your eyes tested. "At 05:26, the bombardment fleet opened fire, and so began the assault on the Normandy beaches. The role of HMS Belfast and Bombardment Force E was to bombard German concrete defence bunkers, in preparation for the troop landings on Gold sector beach. As flagship, HMS Belfast would have had the honour of firing the first shot, however it was just beaten by the cruiser HMS Orion, who fired first. The officers of HMS Belfast were triple checking their targeting calculations to ensure pin-point accuracy, and opened fire very shortly after." www.iwm.org.uk/history/dday/

Hopefully HMS Belfast has a store of shells for wartime use somewhere, she has the biggest guns of any ship in the UK. I would be surprised if the Armed Forces didnt have a plan to use Belfast to protect the local area during some such hypothetical contingency plan ;)
@spark300c4 жыл бұрын
well they just put up dated 6 incher because modern destroyers just heavy as light cruisers. also we got shells that have double the range of world war 2 cruisers. the cruiser class is cost effective platform for attacking land targets. It just navy have like cruiser class go to point it not much different than destroyer. though I think cruisers will make come back because improvement of gun tech and lower cost of firing guns for land support make it attractive.
@thomaskositzki94244 жыл бұрын
That ship has zero chance against modern weapons. Just think an Anti-Ship-Missle could be air-launched at it from 40km away and ruin it in one hit. Belfast has no early warning, no decoys, no CIWS. 90% hit propability on the ASM, send 2 and she is a goner.
