She isn't a HMS Warspite or a HMS Iron Duke. But HMS Caroline outlasted every other ship that fought at Jutland and continues to exist today. That's an impressive achievement itself.

Was just gonna say. It seems avoiding the breakers was the greatest accomplishment for any British warship of the 20th century.

I volunteer onboard Caroline and she is a very beautiful ship and considered lucky. She only ever lost 3 crew members; one who fell overboard in 1914 and two killed at the Battle of Jutland who were onboard another ship during the battle. After her 1919 tour in India she had issues raising steam and returned to the uk at low speeds. So she was to be scrapped, however the first prime minister of Northern Ireland asked for her to be used in the RNVR so her boilers, screws, and rudder were removed and she was towed to Belfast where she has been ever since. She was deemed too impractical to be restored to seaworthiness during WW2. Apart from going into drydock at least 2 times prior to becoming a station in Belfast she remained at dock (although she was moved from one part of the harbour to Alexandria dock where she remains today.) Restored to a museum ship in June 2016 (100th anniversary of Jutland) and closed that Autumn to be drydocked. After the hull was restored from that she was returned to Alexandria dock but turned 180* from how she previously sat, and had two clamps attached to prevent her breaking loose. I highly recommend everyone go visit this ship. She is located behind Titanic Studios (where GOT was filmed) and within close walking distance of the Titanic Experience and SS Nomadic.

Nice museum. I just with they would remove that ugly barn off her and give a proper restoration. I understand its considered "Historic" but it really ruins this nice and unique ship. They should remove it and use it as a display hall offshore, then give the ship her much needed full restoration. That way both are preserved correctly.

I got a special invite and went aboard on the 100th aniversary, May 31, 2016, of the battle of Jutland, and got a private tour. The staff were wonderful, and I made sure to touch the engines as I was sure that part was there a hundred years earlier. Thrill of my lifetime.

I'm going to be honest. I was really excited when I saw that you had uploaded this video. I had uploaded a video 10 months ago on the HMS Caroline. That video at the time of uploading, and until you uploaded this video today. It remained the only history video to be made on this ship. I'm so glad that I can no longer say that I have the only history video on her. This video is absolutely amazing, and very well done. Please keep it up, and I can't wait for more.

You forgot to mention Carolines most famous action at Jutland which involved her dueling with the Dreadnought SMS Nassau, and then firing two torpedos at the ship which passed in front and underneath.

I’ve been looking for WW1 era surviving ships around the world ‘Aurora, USS Texas, Georgios Averoff, IJN Mikasa’ but somehow missed the existence of this one. The fact it’s turbines survived is a bonus. It’s within the realm of possibility for me to visit this one so I’ll add it to my list. In general the Royal Navy hasn’t saved much from this time period.

Caroline survived in the same way as Unicorn, the admiralty essentially forgot she was there acting as a "reserve training establishment" for 50 years. I was her in Belfast in the 1990's but as she was still an active training facility, but you could not visit her as a civilian without an appointment. She looked a bit sad from the Stranraer ferry i was on at the time, she certainly needed a repaint.......but she still exists.

Was the bow remodelled ? The early images appear to show a straight bow. The later images appear to show a curved bulbous bow typical of those better suited to ramming.
@barneymagee32855 ай бұрын
No.
@oml81mm5 ай бұрын
She did not have a " bulbous" bow, but rather a bow designed for ramming. If you look at her today she sits a lot higher in the water than she did as designed. Not sure of the figures but she must be something Like 15ft up at the bow, and a bit less at the stern. Remember that her boilers were removed a long time ago but her turbines ate still in place as is her condenser.

Caroline’s present predicament is disappointing , she is at the end of a cul de sac , which is at the end of another cul de sac where few people go , she cannot be seen from any roads, and visitors have to seek her out , which means they are few. The ship is showing signs of neglect , and the onshore visitor centre is closed , this contains mainly photos , with very few artefacts from her long and varied history. access to Caroline has been severely curtailed , and one now has to book a guided tour , and these only operate on certain days , it seems purchases in the small shop are card payment only , so it looks to some ,almost as if they don’t want visitors , it seems clear that she present management , as well as the isolated location ensures that the ship will never be a successful museum , which is a shame.
@Aren-19975 ай бұрын
I believe the Royal Navy museum who own the ship understand this very well, and have wished to move her to Portsmouth for years, but the Northern Irish Government wont let her go out of pride, despite neglecting the ship......
@barneymagee32855 ай бұрын
@@Aren-1997 I think you are partially correct , but as far as I know, the ship could not have been saved without the financial support of the Northern Ireland assembly , and this only due to local lobbying by ex royal naval reserves . The ship has spent the vast majority of her life in Belfast , so one could argue that is where she belongs, the Northern Ireland assembly, as far as I know, are not “ neglecting the ship” , Their only role was paying for it ….! the maintenance of the ship is, I assume the responsibility of the owner.
@jerry23575 ай бұрын
Last summer, I visited Belfast (for the first time in my life), specifically to visit HMS Caroline. Of course I also visited the Titanic and the Giant's Causeway while I was in Northern Ireland. I thought Caroline was great and she certainly wasn't "showing signs of neglect". She should be kept there, but people should be encouraged to visit Belfast to visit her.
@barneymagee32855 ай бұрын
@@jerry2357 any ship needs constant work , mostly Caroline’s problem is just cosmetic , they should form a team of volunteers to do the wire brushing and painting to make her look tiddly again , Chatham does this very well , with Hms Cavalier looking like a new pin.

The powers that be were told by the late Prince Philip not to touch Caroline while he was alive, that may have played a role in why it lasted so long, soft deplomacy in action.

It’s unsightly , but it is an interesting survivor of an RNVR drill shed , no other survives , for nearly a century , and through the Second World War , this was a meeting place, for her ships company , as well as those of the smaller escort group ships that were attached to her , sadly it has been stripped of all the fittings , and is now just a featureless cinema.
