What a delightful video. The choreography was superb with such precise timing. I liked the added touch of humour at the beginning where the crew member is 'cleaning' the decorative statue of a woman. The cast must have practised for hours to get their dance routine so polished. I must also compliment the videographer for the choice of shots. A truly enjoyable show, I wish I could have been present for the live and full performance. P.S.F. 15/06/10

@torgo21 Like I said below, this is really more for those on the "Gilbert" side of "Gilbert and Sullivan," like me, ie, those who care more about the snarkiness and comedy than matching the old master note for note. So I suppose Sullivan is rolling in his grave listening to this, and his fans are moaning over this stylization of the Master's work. However, Gilbert's giggling, I'm sure, and nudging Sullivan, saying "Oh, lighten up, Arhur!" who of course replies- "We are not amused!" ;)

2 kinds of people watch this: People who don't have a lot of interest or exposure to theater and like this for being able to relate to this production and have fun with it and true theater goers who don't want their classics messed with and hate messing with tradition. Personally I think this is a smart production: It knows that it won't appeal to the high theater goers so it doesn't even try and it just has fun.

This is DEFINITELY a version for those more on the Gilbert side of the music (those in favor of snarkiness and wit and parody) than the Sullivan (the brilliant music and orchestration.) This takes all the liberties that Gilbert loved to take, and many of those that Sullivan HATED. But I like it (and in any case- watch the "Little Buttercup" number from this same production- GREAT Buttercup, one of the best I've ever seen, really captures the fun of the song and character.) We ARE amused!

@crzxr Well, the DO say they're doing a more musical-based version of it, they're not pretending to do this in the typical G&S style. For what it's worth, I like this and LOVE the regular, G&S style, THAT can't be beat...but this is alright for a change of pace so long as you know they're just having fun with it and not attempting to capture the beauty of Sullivan's score, this is playing around more in the Gilbert Side, the whole production's his sort of satire--satire of G&S's style... ;)

@torgo21 I'll agree their choreography is only so-so. However, I don't think it's bad because trading choreography for booming voices is still just one form of spectacle for another. What's important is how they portray the characters and drive the plot, character and plot matter far more, for without a good plot or fun characters, even with Sullivan's music and Gilbert's sense of humor, Pinafore would have sunk. And the mains play their parts well, especially the lovers and Buttercup.

@crzxr Sorry I disagree! I have seen and appeared in conventional G and S down the years. This Australian Company (ESSGEE) have breathed life into Pinafore, Pirates and Mikado and played them to packed houses in Aus and NZ. Sullivan may turn in his grave but I am sure Gilbert would love it with jokes brought up to date in 1997 - 2000 or so. Mikado in particular is hilarious.

While I have no trouble with alternate interpretations of classics (e.g. I always thought the Brian Macdonald versions of G.&S. were tons of fun), they have to be good. I have to agree that the "modern" arrangement with the electronics and the drum kit pretty much sucks.
@crzxr14 жыл бұрын
If anyone thinks it necessary, let alone desirable, to distort G&S in this manner, I think the point of their work has been missed by several miles; a circumstance that I hope is not emulated by this Pinafore and a high explosive mine.
@Tillyvalle15 жыл бұрын
I don't think they claim to be. It's just for fun, there's plenty of 'proper' G&S if you want it. Strange I manage to watch without being drawn to their (ahem) 'private areas' and yes, I am female!

he is being sarcastic because these looks like gay actors lyrics Album: Hms Pinafore We sail the ocean blue, And our saucy ship's a beauty; We're sober men and true, And attentive to our duty. When the balls whistle free O'er the bright blue sea, We stand to our guns all day; When at anchor we ride On the Portsmouth tide, We have plenty of time for play. Ahoy! Ahoy! The balls whistle free Ahoy! Ahoy! Over the bright blue sea, We stand to our guns, to our guns all day. We sail the ocean blue, And our saucy ship's a beauty; We're sober men and true, And attentive to our duty.
