HMS Queen Elizabeth Visit To Liverpool

The Royal Navy's Flagship the HMS Queen Elizabeth visits Liverpool for the first time today. She was helped down river by tugs Svitzer Trident, Stanford, Stanlow and Amazonas. She is in Liverpool for 4 days.
HMS Queen Elizabeth is the lead ship of the Queen Elizabeth class of aircraft carriers and the Fleet Flagship of the Royal Navy. Capable of carrying 60 aircraft including fixed wing, rotary wing and autonomous vehicles, she is named in honour of the first HMS Queen Elizabeth, a World War I era super-dreadnought, which in turn was named after Queen Elizabeth I. The carrier Queen Elizabeth carries her namesake ship's honours, as well as her Tudor rose-adorned crest and motto. Due to the absence of catapults or arrestor wires, Queen Elizabeth is designed to operate V/STOL aircraft. The air wing will typically consist of F-35B Lightning II multirole fighters and Merlin helicopters for airborne early warning and anti-submarine warfare. The design emphasises flexibility, with accommodation for 250 Royal Marines and the ability to support them with attack helicopters and large troop transports such as Chinooks. She is the second Royal Navy vessel to bear the name Queen Elizabeth, and is based at HMNB Portsmouth.
When on operations, Queen Elizabeth will deploy as the central part of a UK Carrier Strike Group, comprising escorts and support ships, with the aim to facilitate carrier-enabled power projection.

Thay normally take the aircraft off when she is going in to port, even in Portsmouth. No idea why. Did come back into Portsmouth for a couple of days with aircraft on the deck, it was quite impressive.

@@ispi_video_photo It took days of preparation and planning to get that F35B off the ship in Portsmouth. They pushed back the dockyard workers a long way before it could take off. The only reason they would leave aircraft on the ship in port is because they can't fly to a shore base.

Great footage there, thank's for sharing. It's impressive watching this lady arrive and leave. Always draws a big crowd in Portsmouth and Gosport and makes it difficult to find a good place to film.

Aircraft carriers never have aircraft o9n board when in home ports (unless its an emergency). I really don't get why people keep banging on about 'no aircraft' when a ship like this has a whole sequence of training serials to work through after a refit and aircraft on board are just not needed.

Bigger than what? the QE Class is the 2nd largest carrier in the world, is 65,00 tons and only 150 feet shorter (in the bow) than a Nimitz. Her flight deck is also wider than a Nimitz.

@@1chish the USS Gerald R Ford is longer, wider, taller and carries more aircraft and crew. All I was saying is that I thought it was going to be bigger and nuclear powered due to the fact that the UK is one of the leading sea fairing nations in NATO. That is all not picking a fight or anything I just thought your carrier’s were as big as the United States carrier’s.

@@pfcajwatkins OK well I never mentioned crew or aircraft because that isn't 'size'. But as you mention the Ford that is basically an updated Nimitz hull and I was treating the US Carriers as the biggest (which they are) and therefore the two QEs are 2nd largest. In both metrics you mention the QE is still 2nd to Ford / Nimitz. The Ford displaces 100,000 tons similar to a Nimitz. QE is actually 70,000 tons all up but still 2nd by a big margin as I said. The Ford is the same length @ 1,092 Ft as a Nimitz. The QE is 920 Ft The Ford is 256 Ft Beam, Nimitz is 252 Ft Not sure you can call 'taller' just because it has a big Christmas Tree on the Island. The QE island structures are similar to a Nimitz or Ford structure. As for being nuclear power the UK decided there is no strategic or tactical advantage to a nuclear powered carrier. None. They still need RAS for aircraft fuel, victualling and weapon replacement so a stores ship is always in the CSG just like in a UK CSG. And they are the slowest ships. And when you add in costs there is simply no justification to a country that does not spend $760 Bn a year on defence. The US Congress did a report back in 1998 and in today's money the extra costs per each ship life of nuclear power is $12 Bn (plus decommissioning) above conventional power. Then we get build costs. We built two state of the art carriers for $10 Bn and they both work as designed and have sailed around the world. The Ford cost $18 Bn and to date doesn't work as designed (but knowing the 'can do' attitude of Americans it will get sorted). For a nation 1/5th the size of the USA we punch above our weight.
