I did my Raleigh training 50 years ago to the month! I must say the training now seems more elaborate than I remember back in 1969 ? the day I passed out was the coldest I can remember with a wind that cut you in half I was lucky that I got out of the guard and spent the time my class was doing the parade cleaning out the instructor's room at the side of the drill shed. that was a close call.

My lad (who is in the video) and another lad was back classed one week after 3 weeks due to illness. It really knocked his confidence, but after the initial shock he put his head down and got on with it. It wasn’t an easy 10 weeks, and moments where he felt that he hated it, but the pass out parade soon comes along and it’s a fantastic day. You just need to be determined, be a team player and get really fit before going.

Andy Shaw you should be really proud of him I was once like him almost 50 years ago at HMS Ganges never regretted it and it made me who I am. I’ve had a fantastic career since leaving the fleet air arm and ended up a director of engineering at easyJet for 10 years. Your boy will do the same and your family will be so proud lets hope and pray his service is peaceful and he isn’t put in harm’s way. But I know if he had to, he would, like thousands of others before him to defend our nation.

Hardest part is kit ironing etc if your fit have half a brain and a positive attitude basic is fairly easy

There'll be one area of training that you'll be weak at. Happens with everyone in phase one. Be resilient though, the staff will encourage you. Keep a positive attitude through the entirety of your time at Raleigh. Be physically fitter than the guidelines and get into the habit of long days with little sleep. I ran an extra 5 miles a day during training and had my locker kit muster standard on a daily basis. I never failed a kit muster that way. Plus the training staff recognised I wasn't messing about. When it came to what I was weak at - I asked for extra help.

Sailors, not soldiers. They don't spend the whole of phase 1 on drill, just the last week or so. Maybe not pongo standards but they've got more important things to do. BZ to them all. The submariners and divers will probably not do such stomping about in the rest of their careers.
