This film contains one of my favourite character traits. Pure and utter unadulterated courage. Midshipman Blakeney, despite being only a boy, and missing an arm, sets about defending the ship when he sees that the enemy mean to sink them, even getting hands-on with the cannon rather than standing back and barking orders like many officers would, and then storming the breach unto the enemy ship, at the head of the charge, all the while calling orders and inspiring his men. He successfully repelled a sabotage attempt, and instigated a successful counter-attack raid, all at age 12 or so. This is the kind of characteristic more characters need. Not the “I have a dark past and am an absolute killing machine.” Bravo Sir, well met!

I always found it amazing when the onearmed boy-officer charged into the fight with one pistol: Well, what do you do after that? You had to rely on the men following your example and cover your back. If not, you are toast.

British Navy always had the attack motto on their minds. Such is what made them a truly world super power. This is a very accurate depiction of how things truly were on the high seas. 💪🏻🙏🏻✨

When I watch movies like this the adrenaline rush is amazing. One thing which saddens me about war is that it is usually the result of one mans vanity and ambition. Thousands die as the result. This movie was very well done.

@twarztr It is very unlikely, but so was the nonfictional Speedy/El Gamo action. (Google it) Jack Aubrey was actually based on the captain that commanded the Speedy. Acheron looks like a 42 or 44 in my opinion, since it has only one gun deck and is very similar in size and shape to the Constitution. It also must have been built in the US at around the same time the US was building their "super frigates," according to the film. In most regards it's almost identical to the Constitution.

@twarztr Well, the HMS Shannon decisively defeated the USS Chesapeake off Boston and the American ship had 50 odd more crew as well as a few more ordinance. But on the whole it was very difficult for a smaller ship to beat a bigger one.

@twarztr well that was the point of sweeping the quarter deck, knock a few off the number of sailors/marines on the acheron, then when they finally got below the main deck they freed the whatever number of prisoners, which gave em a number boost, plus the whole idea that they just were caught completely off guard and lost a crap load of men must have been very demoralizing

@ACAhmann The Acheron is just a French version of the American frigate USS Norfolk whom they battled in the book. They made the ship French to avoid turning off American audiences to the film (nobody likes to see their nation as the antagonist, even in war with such grey morality like 1812).

I know your comment is old, but kids in the US know nothing of Napoleon and 1812. Our history books are all full of the War of 1812 as a stand alone incident.

Read the books they are a delight, l enjoyed the film, but the books transport you back, to the Napoleonic period in such depth and detail, around a prodigious friendship

@KrazyKommieKiller The story was certainly based on the whole Norfolk affair, but from what I could ascertain from the film, the Acheron was far larger than the Norfolk. (a 32 gun, I believe) Based on its layout, the Acheron is more similar to the Constitution. A 32 would have been much more similar to Surprise in appearance. (The real Surprise, not the former HMS Rose.)

Good flick. Perhaps too much dark and murky close up shots that I assume was for budget reasons. I preferred Hornblower. The movie lost money unfortunately so we never got another.

Not a brig. Brigs only have two masts. Surprise has 3. She's a smaller one, but she's a frigate.
