In the movie version, in Helm's deep, if they'd ditched the immeasurably inane call-back to what Gandalf told Aragorn (what is this a lifetime movie?) it would have been a 100% perfect scene. That stupid call-back was dumb...it makes it look like Aragorn is only riding out because he know he has a cheat code rather than as a last ditch effort to let people escape through the caves.
@jacobemery27126 ай бұрын
@@justjeff386 Aragorn knows, but he's letting Theoden Have His Moment so that his confidence grows post-Sauron-spell. That confidence comes in handy later in the larger war when Gondor calls for Theoden's aid, and he rolls up in full force to the battle of the Pelennor Fields 10:20

Also Aragorn suggests it before Gimli reminds him of Gandalf's coming 1:03
@justjeff3866 ай бұрын
@@jacobemery2712 I just think for story telling it would have been way more impactful not to give away that Aragorn was expecting Gandalf's return. While I agree Aragorn was doing his best to mold Theoden back into the King and general he had been prior to Saruman the fighting of the despair of certain death for the faintest of hopes of saving a few living humans was not only a growth point for Theoden but also for Aragorn who had spent so much time as the ranger Strider that he needed help seeing that he was truly the King of the West, the heir of Isildur who can rally and lead all good men. Anyway it's a small nit in an otherwise truly epic moment!
@osric17306 ай бұрын
@@jacobemery2712 Except Aragorn doesn't know because Gandalf is not a god and can fail to turn up and have things go wrong. As indeed they had reliably done so up to this point when Gandalf failed to protect the early stages of the journey from Hobbiton to Rivendell, and then got himself wiped out in Moria resulting in the destruction of the Fellowship at enormous peril to the Ring. At this point Aragorn would be safer to assume Gandalf was going to cock it up again since this is in fact the first time in the book where Gandalf actually comes up with the goods. So its highly unlikely Aragorn believed that rescue was assured and instead agreed with Theoden that they might as well die with their boots on.

One of the things I love about the LOTR is how the most memorable scenes are from ancient history. When they ride out at 2:30 in this video into what they think is certain death, that actually happened during a siege, the knight templars charged out on horseback instead of dying in the fortress, in history they actually all died though, unlike this scene. The massive horse charge in the same battle down the steep hill and then outside minis tirith? (That big white city, sorry I don't remember the names) That was from our own history too when 18000 heavy horsemen from the Holy Roman Empire charged an Ottoman army of 90000 that was besieging Vienna. Apparently the hill was so steep they charged down that there was no slowing down or stopping once it started, it was biggest cavalry charge in history and sent the Ottoman army into retreat and ended their expansion. The Polish winged Hussar knights had 3000 involved with the charge. I can't even begin to imagine what 18000 knights charging toward you would look like, it would have looked endless.

I read 15-20 of the comments down below and all of you talked about LOTR!! It is hard to describe how it feels when you watch your favorite characters from the books come alive on a huge screen! Or just characters (not in the books). Some stories and epic scenes stay with you forever if the Director and Composer did a good job. You watch it again and again and the hunger to see it again only intensifies. The music only adds to the scenes and all the HAIR on the body stands up, saluting for a job well done! Like you guys, I've seen the first 3 LOTR countless times and no matter how many more times I will watch it again, it never get's boring. It took over 4 months for the CGI team to get that battle scene.

The Charge of the Rohirrim is no doubt the most powerful movie scene ever made. I cry every time I see it. It's just a fucking masterpiece. Theodes speech and the way they all know they're most likely riding to their deaths but still doing it becomes some things just need to happen and Saurun needs to lose. The way they all scream DEATH and run right into the afterlife with a big "FUCK YOU!" written all over their faces. Just downright flawless.

@Maedhros1981 Жыл бұрын
I am unsure of how many actually knows that the Rohirrim Charge at the Battle of Pelenor Fields is likely a historical reference to the Siege of Vienna 1683. - At the time, Vienna was considered the gateway to Europe and it was widely recognized that if it was to fall, the turks would have no problem advancing further into Europe. The turks were MANY more than the force defending Vienna, so a call for aid was sent out and Poland (a mighty force at the time) among others responded and arrived at Vienna with almost 20.000 cavalry! - It was the Polish King Sobieski and The Winged Hussars that in 1683 wrote themselves into history books as the largest ever cavalry charge ever recorded! Try reading through both stories once more and you'll see that despite some differences the similarities of The Siege of Vienna 1683 with Tolkien's Battle of Pelenor Field are striking! Of course the Rohirrim Charge at the Battle of Pelenor Fields is THE charge of cinema history! - Everytime I watch it, I just wish I could relive the first time I watched again and again with the emotions attached while at the cinema! - EPIC!

I have watched it dozens of times and it still brings a tear to the eye. Even Gandalf's expression when he realizes Rohan really did answer the call. That combined with the moment where Theoden weighs his options back when Aragorn says "The Beacons! The beacons are lit!" and Theoden KNOWS that he could live longer if he didn't answer the call, but decides to anyway, because mankind must stand together... that momentary expression from Gandalf says 'There really is hope for this world, when we can count on each other'.

For those that don't know, the reliefe of Minas Tirith is heavily inspired by one Christian Europe's most important historical reliefs itself. For those that have heard the song "When the winged hussars arrived", it's based on the 1683 siege of Vienna, when 170'000 Ottoman soldiers are sieging the Capital of the Holy Roman Empire, defended only by about 15'000 Austrian soldiers, volunteers and mercenaries. If it were to fall, it would be a mighty blow to the Christian Europe, the Holy league and allow for further Ottoman expansion west and north. The siege were broken after 60 days when a massive relief force of about 90'000 arrived, and the largest cavalry charge in history of about 18'000 hussars broke the Ottoman moral and sent the on a retreat.
