It's because the US Navy name their capital ships after States. As the SSBN is the capital ship of today, so their SSBNs are called after states. Their SSNs, (Fast Attack USN/Hunter-Killer RN) Are typically named after major cities. The RN has a very long history and tends to reuse ship names from the past. For example HMS Vanguard SSBN takes her name from all previous Vanguards, the previous being the Royal Navy's last Battleship.

Just a thought, which I'm sure the Royal Navy and HM's government must have already envisioned. What happens when a surprise first nuclear strike wipes out the whole of Central London and with it the entire cabinet including the prime minister? Who then will have the authority including the knowledge of the nuclear code to give the order to strike back to the crew of HMS Vengeance?!
For this exact reason all of our ballistic submarines have something called the "Letter of Last Resort" which is written by each new Prime Minister and placed aboard all of our ballistic subs. It is a "what to do next" should such a thing happen and the UK's government becomes incapacitated. Whatever is written in these letters is completely confidential and not known even to the submarine commander until the tragic day they might have to open them but they would generally dictate what the sub does next, which could be anything - firing upon the nation that attacked the UK - awaiting instructions from an ally such as the US - moving to a location to defend an ally such as Australia - anything. The Letters of Last Resort were once thought to be a myth but were revealed to be a real protocol in the 1990's. Writing the Letter of Last Resort is one of the first things that any incumbent Prime Minister is asked to do.
@julianfp19523 жыл бұрын
@@krashd I read that part of that protocol is to burn the letters unopened once a prime minister leaves office so that no one except the by then ex prime minister knows what he/she put in their letter (or letters - one identical letter per boat I assume) of last resort. Has any ex PM ever divulged the contents? I think the answer is no but I’m not 100% sure. Edit: Oops. I see the Wikipedia article mentions the destruction after leaving office. I should have followed ggarlick46’s link before commenting!

@joe caterman agree about not using them. But the accuracy is important. Without that, it's impossible to get a clean hit. If you don't get a clean hit, there's a lot of messy radiation poisoned people with a lot less actual dead people. If they wanted to poison thousands of people, detonating it in the sky is better. And using radiated cobalt (like dirty bombs) is better. Those nukes are to kill and finish once and for all. Not to leave thousands of people with lots of radiation poisoning and after effects that would last centuries.

An attack boat can surface to have a severely ill person transferred to a hospital, a bomber can't, so the doctor on board a Vanguard-class submarine has to be able to treat almost anything.
