Wouldn't a structure creating a roof over it make it much easier & less costly to preserve from the elements in the medium term?

That is a good idea. However, that would require a huge building and possibly the moving of the ship to another location, it's also probably too expensive.

@@madcyclist58 will one? guest age she some 40 years old then USS Constitution? and she 261 years old, war damage, pollution damage during the late 19th century and 20th century. the fact she about 97 % wood and she in the open air all her life , where Brit sh weather can be quite challenging at times there things come to mind. i also herd the USS Constitution is now starting to show her age and her sailing day are slow coming to a end

@@madcyclist58 The USS Constitution is not the same ship that originally set sail, it has over time, been completely rebuilt with newer materials.
