This is like comparing a battleship ( like Yamato) to a light cruiser (like Atlanta). Constitution was a great ship(frigate) but she can’t fight 1st,2rd, or even 3rd ships of the line. HMS Victory was a 1st rate if I recall correctly. She was built as a 5th rate, but carried the same number of guns as a 4th rate so she might have a chance against 4th rates if her crew is good and lucky.

the first time the Victory passed the Constitutions stern, if she had fired it would have been hell of a stern rake
@tonybmw57853 жыл бұрын
Although the Victory would almost certainly win any engagement with the Consitution, there is no way the Constitution would risk getting into a broadside confrontation with a first-class ship of the line like Victory or want to come within range of her big guns. Constitution was strong but she relied on speed always ran when she faced one of the Royal Navy's first or second rate ships of the line. Much is made of her five prizes but they were all smaller than her 44 gun capacity. However had such a confrontation taken place, the Constitution would have been totally outgunned, and given her reputation for strength Victory in the early stages would have avoided going for the hull and instead used canister and grapeshot from upper gun decks to rake Constitutions decks, and then chain shot to cripple her by taking out her rigging before moving in and letting the big 32 pounders blow her to kingdom come. No one in the late 18th and early 19th C would mix with the British ships of the line unless they were sailing a ship of comparable size and even then given how good the RN's gunners were you also needed a hell of a lot of luck. Having been on board both ships one thing that Americans don't get unless they have been on Victory is just how much smaller the Constitution is and how limited her guns elevation are in comparison to Victory, who's upper gun deck would have been able to fire down on to her decks had she been foolish enough to come close enough for her guns to attempt to cause any significant damage Victory. The Consitution might have relied on hit and run but to do it effectively she would have come close enough to have been a sitting duck to the big guns on Victorys lower decks and for all, she is a strong ship I'm not sure how she would have stood up against a broadside of 40 odd cannons blasting her with 15 32 lbs, 14 22lbs and 13 12lbs shot all at once. Also given the speed that the RN could fire she would have been in range for between four and six rounds from each cannon, and that is a devastating level of firepower, and even if she did try to hit and run she would have had to expose her much weaker stern to the Victorys guns as she tried to pull away which would result in a one-way trip to see Davy Jones!

I suggest two broadsides of 50 guns each as they came to bear; up to 32-pounders. VICTORY passed across CONSTITUTION and therefore would have raked the frigate. While CONSTITUTION's construction had seen broadsides fail to penetrate the hull in the 1812 war, raking would have ripped her insides to pieces and killed most of her crew. This was the tactic Nelson employed against the French/Spanish fleet at Trafalgar. That said, I'm not quite so sure VICTORY could manoeuvre as smartly as shown here. More likely she would have held off at superior range and used her far superior firepower including in throw-weight to hammer CONSTITUTION into submission; all depends no who is in command I guess.

Thanks for making this video, very interesting. I see a flaw in the battle sequence. The constitution had the weather gauge in your scenario. If the captain had chosen to engage at all he would have turned under the victory stern and raked with a heavy broadside without suffering much damage hoping to take out her steering gear and mizzenmast..Then using his maneuverability and speed to flee the engagement without loss. This is the only way to survive full combat contact with the ship of the line. In reality the constitution did meet a ship of the line and its support squadron. And it took all the ingenuity and strength of the crew to get away but that's exactly what they did.

@speed150mph8 жыл бұрын
I agree, and the US navy knew this when they had envisioned the design of constitution. They chose a heavy frigate so that her captain could choose his fights. She had the speed to evade the british ships of the line, and the firepower to deal with the fast frigates that could catch her. If USS constitution had encountered HMS Victory, her sole chance of survival would have been to use her speed and possibly her shallower draft to stay out of gun range and break contact. Just like she did to the British squadron during the great chase.

The only difference between Constitution and UNITED STATES were the 32 pounder Caronades on Constitution compared to the 42's on UNITED STATES. But they wouldn't have been engaged until the guns had been reduced in number on Victory. Victory had 18 pounders for the most part. We could reload our 24 pounders faster than Victory which would allow more effective at a greater range than Victory. The HMS Macedonian made this mistake against the USS UNITED STATES. That's how we defeated Macedonian. Long range, heavier hitting, at a faster rater of firing.

There’s a few things here I’d like to mention even if no one sees this. 1. It is true that the Constitution has cannonballs bounce off her sides, she was built from a very strong oak and sure, the occasional cannon ball wouldn’t be able to penetrate her. 2. The Constitution sails at a speed of around 13 knots at best, somewhat superior to the Victory’s 11. 3. The biggest weakness of a 1st rate is the huge amount of gun powder and cannon supplies needed for the huge amount of guns on each side, if even a spark got near it the victory would explode as any 1st rate would. Unfortunately they kept their explosive materials under good protection so it would take a direct hit to make the magazines explode. Unfortunately even these 3 factors, the Constitution would be utterly destroyed by a broadside. It’s only chance to fight (which shouldn’t be the Captain’s first option) is to keep distance and maneuver around the slower Victory. A one on one wouldn’t take her down, but perhaps 3 or 4 of the original 6 ships made by the US Navy, similar in structure to the Constitution would do some damage. However once again it would have to be at a distance since just one broadside would obliterate any ship.

@@TheMountainMan001 I understand what you say, and surely you are right, since the holy trinity due to design problems had to be taken to reforms, which fixed some of these failures. The battle of Trafalgar, if it is true that from the beginning it would be thought that the combined fleets would surely win, but the ships in that defeat had little to do, the crew, who were levies recruited in the surrounding towns who had little training + the little vision of the captains and French command + the low morale for the previous points were what led the holy trinity to lose that battle. On the other hand, the holy trinity that, because of Nelson's good strategy of cutting the enemy line with columns, was left almost alone with two other allied ships (with an inexperienced crew) and even managed to fight a lot and leave almost to the drag to victory, and that in the strategic and numerical inferiority that Nelson managed to create. But yes, you are right in the end, the ship does not win the battle, but the crew wins it, which in that case surely won the victory. The Constitution would never have won against the Victory in a squared up 1 on 1 fight. There's just no way. The Constitution's advantages were it had the speed to allow it to run away from ships that could sink her. And the firepower to sink the ships that could catch her. This allowed her Captain to pick and choose his fights at will. Which meant the Constitution only ever entered a fight the captain knew he could win. Which explains her never being defeated. The Victory on the other hand was an absolute behemoth. If she ever brought her broadside to bear on you, you'd be better off just capping yourself in the head with your flintlock. Higher odds of survival there. The Victory was, and I know this is hard to believe, a "Ship of the Line" meaning she was meant to be right there on the line going toe to toe with the most powerful ships of her era and WIN. If those two ships ever did meet each other unescorted you can bet your bottom dollar the Constitution just would've put her rudder to the Victory and outran it. It'd be a draw in that sense. The Constitution not having the power to sink the Victory, and the Victory not having the speed to ever get the Constitution in range. In short: USS Constitution = Speed and cunning HMS Victory = Raw power and fortitude.

I dont know if this is a typo or not, but the HMS Victory was put out of active military service in 1827 and the very last time it saw battle was at the battle of trafouger in 1804. There is no possible way the HMS Victory could have ever seen action against a ship like the USS Constitution much less any other ship in the US fleet since the US and Great Britain had been on fairly good terms since the war of 1812. As I said in the beginning of this comment, I'm not sure if this is a typo or not but if it is than I suggest that you fix it or else your going to trigger another historian that may not be as polite as myself. This speed would not be enough of a difference unless USS Constitution turned around and fled immediately upon viewing HMS Victory. If it stayed to fire 1 salvo, it wouldn’t be able to get away fast enough to survive the impending returned salvo from HMS Victory. Which would result with USS constitution being sunk. If the commander of the Constitution was actually insane enough to go against the Victory, the last thing he would do is trade broadsides as seen in this video. He would try to use his ships superior speed to cross the bow or stern. In this video I actually saw the reverse, the Victory crossing the Constitution's stern. One Victory broadside fired the into Constitution's stern, raking the length of the ship, would ruin the Constitution . As has been pointed out by others - the exercise is kind of silly. Ship of the line vs frigate is something no frigate commander would ever willingly do. They were brave, not stupid. Upon sighting a ship of the line Constitution would turn the other way and raise the "catch me if you can" signal.

The CONSTITUTION was not the best ship of her time. The USS UNITED STATES was heavier, faster, and more powerfully armed than CONSTITUTION. The Old Waggon had massive diagonals and a poop deck which added to her weight in excess of 2,000 tons. In the War of 1812 she was up-gunned from 32 pounder cannonades to 42 pounder cannonades by Stephen Decatur. And as far as speed, she was faster than CONSTITUTION in the Indies she was constantly slackening sail for CONSTITUTION to catch up by log entries by 1st Lt. John Malowney of the USS UNITED STATES, and testimonies of officers of the USS CONSTITUTION. In a chase by both frigates after a French privateer. The USS UNITED STATES disappeared over the horizon and captured the privateer before CONSTITUTION arrived on the scene. There was mention of she being a sluggish sea slug. The _Constitution_ and her sister ships were the heaviest and best-armed frigates of their day, and they did well enough against the Royal Navy for the Admiralty to issue standing orders for British frigates not to try and take on American frigates one on one. But the _Victory_ was a first rate ship of the line -- the heaviest battleship of that era, and it's just in another class. _Constitution_ would no more have tried to take it on than a British light cruiser in WWII would have tried to sink the _Bismarck_ by itself. Usually in a battle ships of the line did not engage frigates unless the frigate attacked first. If they met one on one the frigate would escape as it was much faster and lighter gunned. Also the disparity in crew sizes would mean that a boarding was going to go heavily in the larger ships favour.
@danielsprouls94583 жыл бұрын
The constitution was a handy ship. Designed to outgun anything that could catch it, and to outrun anything that could outgun it. It never was meant for the line of battle. Hms victory was meant to fear no one. But extremely expensive and not likely to catch anyone on the open sea.
@morteparla69265 жыл бұрын
Here's something that no game ever gets right, and no person seems too know.... Ship battles would almost never take place with the ships sailing anywhere near each other. Most engagements happened no closer than 1/8th mile, and some of the longer engagements were over a whole mile. Getting close was suicidal. Remember, the process of actually manuevering a ship isn't as simple as pushing a button, or even turning the wheel. There's an entire coordinated effort between tens of men just too change direction. Now consider that if the ships sailed close to each other, the chance of crashing into each other is almost 100%. Ships also don't sail in a perfectly straight line. The current, waves and wind make sure of that. Not good for either party.

I think the USS Constitution would win for the following reasons. The Constitution was newer, faster, and more maneuverable than Victory, which was built in 1765. Constitution is armed with 30 24 pound guns with a range of 1200 yards. Victory is armed with the following: 30 32 pound guns: 500 yards range. 28 24 pounders: 1322 yards range. 30 22 pounders: 1969 yards range. 12 short 12 pounders: 2000 yards. Victory could return fire with her 24 and 12 pound guns, but her 12 pound guns would not be very effective against Constitution's sides made of live oak, so it would be a more or less even fight. The advantage Constitution has is her speed and her long guns. She would stay out of range of most of Victory's guns and use her superior speed and maneuverability to get behind Victory and rake her.

So where's the rockets and Ironsides on the constitution?
@briananthony40446 жыл бұрын
The Victory is a slow ship at 8 to 9 knots so the Constitution could probably have maneuvered them with her 13 knot speed and closed and opened the distance at will. It also had very thick hardwood hull, much thicker than normal for a frigate, it could be considered a battle ship of the line cut down to one gun deck.The Victory did have that stupendous broadside, and both had similar cannon. Some of the Victories cannon balls would have gone over the low silhouette of the C while the C's fire could hardly miss the high sided V. So with the first volley the C's fire would have slammed into the V's side knocking out some of her guns and guncrew. The V's broadside would have damaged the C and probably brought down a mask. The C's speed advantage would now be lost. Coming around the back of the C the V would have fired into C's stern taking out it's rudder. Unable to steer the V could now pound the C into submission though that would be slow with 'old ironsides' thick hull. Would the V have come alongside and boarded, the V had twice the number of crew, I don't know. All things considered the Victory should win, but with a good Captain the Constitution could take out the V, how? By realizing that a broadside battle was against her, the C would used her superior speed to keep out of range of the V's guns, and cut across the V's stern firing a broadside, that would take out the few guns at the stern of the V and probably take out the exposed rudder. Then it would be won by firing on the V at her vulnerable bow and stern and keeping out of range of her broadside. The V would have her bow and stern shot away, be dismasted and internal fires would eventually cause the V to strike her colours and surrender.

Constitution would have had to get within range of Victorys guns, to be able to fire her own guns, Victory had 30x32 pounder guns, the biggest guns on Constitution were 24 pounders, she did have 32 pound Carronades, but they are pretty useless at anything over point blank range, so once Constitution was in a position to fire her guns, she would have been under fire of Victorys 32 pounders and also Victory could then use her own 24 pounders.

Constitution's heaviest armament were 24pd Cannon while the Victorys lower gun deck had 32pd Cannon, the latter would have been pounding the former before her guns were even in range.

Hms victory's weaponry was intended to be thirty 42-pounders (19 kg) on her lower deck, twenty-eight 24-pounder long guns (11 kg) on her middle deck, and thirty 12-pounders (5 kg) on her upper deck, together with twelve 6-pounders on her quarterdeck and forecastle.

A 44 gun frigate would be so screwed if she tried to take on a 100 gun line of battle ship. 32 ponders on the gun deck, 24 pounders on the orlop deck, and 18 pounders on the upper deck. Against 22 18 pounders per broadside. No contest

Costitution carried 52 guns. 30 being 24 pdr long guns, and 20 being 32 pdr carronades, she also had two 24 pdr bow chasers. This isn't too say she isn't boned in a fight with victory.

People here saying:"oh the constitution was faster" yeah by 2 knots... The victory had over 100 guns, long barreled 32pdrs, and when it was in construction the wood was left for a long time as at the time the need for the ship dwindled and so the wood strengthened so the constitutions wood wasnt even that much better, yes the cross brace design was very intuitive and would be adopted by all major powers at the time, however the constitution never got into a true fight with a British ship, All the ships she fought were captured French or merchant ships. The constitution was by far the best 5th/4th rate frigate that wasn't a frigate, but the victory was the best ship and would of easily destroyed the constitution with highly trained and experienced crew and would of been apart of an armada

Hms Victory. Massive fire power, for the time. Incredeble.

"Both ships won..." That's literally impossible, this video shows what would have happened. And HMS Victory won fair and square.

Why would a 100-gun line-of-battle ship fight a 40-gun frigate? There would have been no honor in such an unfair fight, nor would the captain of said frigate have been stupid enough to even consider challenging a ship that large. This video portrays something that just would not have happened, as the frigate would have tried to run away or strike its colors, if it could not escape.

unfair battle hms victory is called "victory", therefore victory by default, hence why constitution sunk with no cannon fire
@bennewnham44973 жыл бұрын
The Constitution is a fine ship but HMS Victory is a first rate ship of the line with triple gun decks - it has vastly greater firepower.
