basically, both dom C7 and dom F#7 have a tritone of E and Bb. so you can use those two chords interchangeably. so a circle of fourths can become a chromatic decentsion of dominant chords. looks like he isnt stopping at dominant chords that share tritones, but also altered dominants, hence the tritone in the left, but an Ab chord in the right. Cdom 7 with b6 aug9. or C altered dominant.

Kinda hard to follow, even for an intermediate player. But I was able to grasp enough information to improve my skills. Got completely lost in most of your examples. I have barely any clue how you were able to form all the right hand chords for all those tritones. I assume that's just something I'll have to experiment with. For now I'll be working with the inverted sus2 chord, sharp 9 and 5, and flat 9 and 5 over each tritone. Hopefully I'll get there, but thanks for the info

Hey boss, really quick correction: a tritone sub is typically when you substitute the dominant 7 of the key with they key's tritone. For example, instead of Dmin7 - G7 - CMaj7, the tritone sub would be Dmin7 - Gb7 - CMaj7. Super hip sound. If you mentioned this and I missed it my apologies, keep it up man.

I love your piano lessons. But, how do you know what chords to play in the right hand when playing tritones? I hope you could answer my question.
@markjaylandes9 жыл бұрын
+Miguel Manguiob Lots of chords can go with tritones. A simple formula I use is go one full step down of either note of the tritone. For example, your tritone is E and Bb, then play a D or an Ab chord. Another example; your tritone is C and F#, play a Bb or E chord. Another substitution of the RH chord is playing Jazz 4ths instead. Example-LH tritone is C# and G, you could play B major or F Major, OR you can play LH-C# and G RH-B, E, A or LH-C# and G RH-F, Bb, Eb.

Probably a dumb question, but when you have E and Bb in your left hand, why is this the tritone for C? I just don't understand, someone please explain?
@terrybailey20159 жыл бұрын
Emil Rostad Not a dumb question at all. Tritones are defined by notes being three whole steps apart, and the exact middle of an octave. (from E to Bb is three whole steps and from Bb to E is three whole steps, completing the octave) Each dominant chord has a tritone between the major third of the chord and the minor seventh of the chord. (for a C dom chord, the major third is E and Bb is the minor seventh) So for a D dom 7 chord, F# is your major third and C is your minor seventh, which also happens to result in...a tritone and so on and so on.
@alanasthomas8 жыл бұрын
+Terry Bailey OK, I had the same questions as Emil, so where I am confused is what would make me want to play a C dom chord versus a C maj chord? What if I didn't know to play a C dom chord versus a C maj chord? How then do I differentiate when the E and Bb tritone would be best versus a C and F# tritone? Are you only allowed to substitute tritones on dominant 7th chords?
@kjarrij8 жыл бұрын
It's a matter of taste, some music genres (like blues for example) use a dominant chord as a base chord. But it is more orthodox to use a C maj chord, generally speaking. "How then do I differentiate when the E and Bb tritone would be best versus a C and F# tritone?" A C and F# tritone implies the C major lydian scale, while the E and Bb tritone implies the C major dominant scale. Two very different worlds. "Are you only allowed to substitute tritones on dominant 7th chords?" As far as I know, yes.

wow, great lesson. I'm going home now to work.... i would also like to offer.... when you're talking about the bass line and it's sub, you can say you can sub any bass as a tritone as well. if the bass if Ab, when D would also work...... Ab would be the forth or D the chromatic or visa versa .....

why is E and Bflat the tritone for the key of C major?
@kjarrij8 жыл бұрын
What hnsmusic means to say is that it's the tritone in a C major MIXOLYDIAN scale. Because the distance between E and Bflat is a tritone, and it is the only tritone you can find between two notes in the C mixolydian scale. There are other major scales of course, most common is the ionian, but if he were talking about the C major ionian scale, the tritone would be between F and B, the 4th and the 7th.
@fritzjackson43368 жыл бұрын
It is for C7. The 3rd and 7th interval is only a tritone if the chord is dominant. A tritone is a fourth plus a half step or 6 half steps (notice that that's half of the 12 notes in the chromatic scale). That would mean the 3rd and 7th of a C7 is a tritone as they're 6 half steps apart. If you lower the 3rd and 7th of C7 a half step, you still have a tritone, but it's the 3rd and 7th of the four of C7 (F7), but this time, the 7 is below the 3rd because of the nature of tritones. Realizing this brings you to the Tritone substitution. The 3 and 7 of any two chords that are a tritone apart are the same, just inverted. For example: the 3 and 7 of a C7 is E and Bb respectively. If we go a tritone from C (up or down, doesn't matter since it's 6 half steps), we get F#7. The 3 and 7 of an F#7 are Bb and E respectively. Another example: Gmin7's 3 and 7 are Bb and F... *tritone interval*... C#min7's 3 and 7 are F and Bb. This means that for any chord in a song, you can replace it for the chord a tritone away *a tritone sub*. Usually use it in the context of a stagnant chord and make it a 2-5 otherwise it may sound off.

1st, thanks so much for this video. I"m learning a lot. But I am confused about something you did early on in the video (at 0:48) You said that you played E and Bb as the major 3rd and dominant seven to get your tritone. Then you said if you just go down chromatically and play Eb and A that you have the tritone for F..........................but isn't the interval from Eb to A the Major 3rd and Dominant 7 of B? Hold on, I just got it. The tritone is equidistant in the scale so Eb to A can be the tritone for F or B. They are just inverted. Do I understand correctly? This is all brand new to me and I"m coming up with exciting songs because of it. Thanks!
@kingjliow9 жыл бұрын
+Rick Walker  E and Bb is a tritone away. a Tritone is when notes are three whole steps apart (E - F# - G# - Bb). but i think this "Tritone" theory or technique (well correct me if i'm wrong) its about building chord with its foundation is the Tritone within that chord (look at +Terry Bailey comment, not so far below) but i'm still questioning the idea behind playing a Tritone chord when the Tritone on the left hand is not related to the chord on the right, but still sounded right anyway. i mean c'mon, look at 7:50 even the chord app can't figure it out haha.
@kjarrij8 жыл бұрын
At 7:50 he is playing a D altered chord, or a D major dominant chord with a flat 9 and a flat 13 (D7b9b13). You play this chord by picking out the tritone with your left hand (the third and flat seventh) while playing a major triad , three whole steps down from the root (in this case, a Bflat-major chord) with your right hand. Rootless of course, which is why the chord app doesnt't know what the fuck he is doing. Right after the chord he plays a G minor though, which underscores that it was a D dominant chord.

not really explaining any of the how's or why's just what's and when's, all in all a pretty vague explanation that doesn't help much
@jakejacobs1268 жыл бұрын
Troy Teter II I would suggest doing a review of music theory. I to VI using dominant 7 chords is pretty common. There are many ways to explain how and why. This is just one way of doing a common movement in a fancy way.
@xTEETSx8 жыл бұрын
I know that I to VI wht dominant 7 chords is a common motion, what I'm saying is you aren't explaining it very well in the video, I can't watch the video and immediately apply the theory to other instruments, as in what certain tritones go with what intervally related chords to it and why, as well as other reasons
@jakejacobs1268 жыл бұрын
Troy Teter II I understand. Everyone learns differently. How is easy. It's why that's subjective to the resulting sound. Science can explain but it's the art of music that keeps me from answering why. I could say,"Because it sounds good." But that probably wouldn't help you. Hopefully you find what your looking for. Thanks for the support and comment.
