HO Scale: BNSF/Santa Fe Warbonnet

Yes, I have branched off a little bit from my usual UP modeling and have been dabbling with some BNSF. #609 is a KATO unit that I bought new years ago, then after not running it much at all, I did a bit of a trade with our club president, Sam, who's favorite line is the Santa Fe.
Sadly, Sam fell ill with a brain tumor a couple years ago and after a long fight, is finally succumbing to it. His last day at the club was Saturday the 1st. I've known him since I was a teenager and he's been one of the best members, and one of the best club Presidents we've ever had. As many years as I've known him, he's been one of those extremely strong willed, don't take S from anyone kind of people. One you'd never imagine something like this happening too.
Back when we did the trade three or four years ago, he said I could have it back if anything ever happens. Unfortunately it has, and FAR sooner than I or anyone ever imagined. So, I've re-acquired it and will keep this unit pretty much as is, I may stick a very small yellow "BNSF" patch under the road numbers, not sure yet, maybe some very minor weathering (I at least want to dust up the radiator intakes and screens) and of course add sound. I'm thinking Loksound's new GE sound decoder would be amazing for this, it's sound is fantastic. So, when money permits...
This video and the 609 are dedicated to Sam... he will most definitely be missed.
Anyway, I honestly don't know what I'm posting next, between last weekend and this weekend, I've filmed so many trains and awesome power, I don't even know where to begin. So, I'm not even going to try and predict what's coming up. It's gonna be a surprise... even for me. :D

Hey Jason. Nice video! sorry about your friend Sam. That really stinks, let him know I'm thinking of him he will be in my prayers. Anyway, that's a nice SF unit there. Can't wait until it gets sound! Thanks Spencer. Appreciate it, and yeah it very much stinks. Been a blow to the club, but we'll keep plugging away at it. As for that Dash-9, I'm thinking of going with a Loksound decoder for it. I've seen some videos reviews of the new ones for GE, and holy cow they sound amazing. They put the Intermountain/Tsunami decoder in my GEVO to shame. Tempted to rip that turd out and replace it also...

Very nice BNSF yeah it's beautiful i too a Santa Fe guy orig from NY NJ area but always loved the Warbonnet paint scheme. It feels as i know your dear friend based on how you described him. I know this video is from 3 years back however feels like today. Death's are just awful when you lose a friend or worse a dearly loved family member. if you lose a wife she can be somewhat be replaced not so with mother, father and siblings they can't be replaced thats why family is most important. Time is a great healer being the further distance in time diminish the hurt/pain. So i like your BNSF Loco and your video @ the club. Good Job !!!

Fare thee well, Sam. Sounds like you're leaving a heckuva legacy. Appreciate how quiet this video is, especially in a club setting. Really makes for a better viewing experience, IMO. And the size of the yard! I gotta get me a warehouse...

Thanks! The layout is 76' x 56' U shaped layout with two massive inner peninsulas. 3 mainlines, each being around a scale 6 1/2 miles. You can literally "loose" a 100 car train on this thing. :D Appreciate your thoughts on Sam. Doctors are saying no more than 6 months, and that's on the optimistic side.

Thanks Vinny, I would leave it as is, but the things I plan to do are things Sam was going to do anyway... well, except for the tiny BNSF patch, but the weathering and sound, he was wanting that done. So, I'll just finish it up. We haven't lost him just yet though, docs are saying maybe another 6 months, but he most likely won't be back to the club. Time will tell though. But yep, I thought you'd get a kick out of the power of choice for this one. :D

Thanks! Yes, this is the club layout. I have a video or two posted of it showing the whole thing, but it's been a while and I really need to do an update on it. But we are also going to have some major changes in the near future, so I may end up doing a before and after.

***** If you want a little cheaper sound, but still fantastic, and great motor control, try LokSound. I got one and I love it! It turned a crappy Bachmann FT-A into my smoothest running locomotive! (Promise I'm not being paid to endorse loksound)

Thanks. Yeah that's been there for years. It's a spot where two modules meet, sometimes those are hard correct sometimes, as long as it isn't causing any problems, it's not been a top priority to get rid of.

If your ever in the Kansas City area be sure to check out the yard over in the east bottoms. I have sat on the bridge there watching the trains get classified or humped. The west bottoms has many older style buildings that were built curved to follow the train tracks. North Kansas City has the BNSF yard and a Norfolk Southern yard if im correct. Theres also tons of Union pacific and Kansas City Southern traffic so one never knows what he will see. Union Pacific has a huge yard over in KCK or on the Kansas side.

I live in the Kansas City area. My friends and I railfan all over the place here. Neff, Knoche, Avondale, Armourdale, Argentine, Murray... all the major yards, and lots of sweet spots in between.
