One of the better model railroad layout videos I've seen. Not quite Ken Patterson quality but clearly a 9 out of 10. No panning, no schmaltzy music, no arcane narration, no "Today I'm gonna show you..." , no talking head (really, nobody wants to see someone's ugly mug). Instead nice short scenes cutting to shots relative to the previous shot, framing taken from the perspective of a human actually standing on the ground (as opposed to hovering 50' in the air), nice transition shots from down a street or on an overpass just like a real live rail fan would take. Nicely done!

I Often traveled up Rt 7 on the way home to Oneonta, thru Bainbridge, Otego, Unadilla, Sidney. There was an aerospace company in Sidney, had a tour of it, but can't remember the name. Was going to try to represent it in my layout. Did you ever see photos of the propane explosion just east of Oneonta in Colliersville, Feb of 1974. I have some slides. Those cars where thrown about like they were HO scale.

For being "highly freelanced" this sure is a treat! Grew up in Binghamton, NY and at least once a year our family traveled--first on local roads, then on I-88 up to Albany-Schenectady and out to Massachusetts. There is indeed, more industry on your layout than what I remember---but enough suggestion to make the journey reproduce fond memories! Somewhere in there this train reversed directions and missed Binghamton. Oh Well...modeling "Bingotown" isn't easy to do...even freelanced! Thaks for keeping the NYO%W in....what do you run for it's power? :)
@dnhman7 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Caswell thanks for watching and your kind feedback! We had to go with freelance as many aspects of distance, trackage time and era would not be 100 % and I was certain I would be called out on it🤗! I only was only able to cherry pick certain aspects of this part of the line to capture the feel. I added the extra industries so as to make operations more interesting. A few prototypes are modeled such as the power plant, Blue Seal, H&k and oil dealer in and around Bainbridge. The NYOW interchange was added for more operations. Offline staging represent Binghamton and Albany/Canada to the north. I do have one SW which painted for NYOW #114. We will have to make more video of that part!!! Cheers!

One of the problems I have with the look of all model railroads (and this has nothing to do with the skill of those who built them) is the turnouts. I have yet to see a truly realistic looking model railroad turnout. I don't know why manufacturers make the gap in the rails as wide as they do. But other than that, which I know is beyond your control, your layout is magnificent.
@dnhman6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, it is true about the turnouts, even some of the more costly ones are not prototypical, i had built this layout at time i was on severe budget so had to make do with what I could afford. Additionally I do not possess the skill to handlay turnouts. I will say from a performance perspective these Atlas turnouts have been very reliable. Thanks for watching !!

Boy, did you ever nail the Southern Tier! The town scenes of Unadilla, Bainbridge and Oneonta are incredible. Love the scratchbuilt depot in Oneonta. And the rural scenes are just as well done. They are the hills of southern New York. I also liked the Foscale Deckers Tar and Jerry's Signs. Very unique stuff. One question. What is that sound like a goose honking throughout the video? Is that a programmable sound in a Tsunami or Lok Sound to represent the D&H diesel sound? Curious as to what it is. I've never heard it before. Great layout that ought to be in RMC or MR. Go for it!
@dnhman7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your feedback. As mentioned this really started out as a test with the GoPro. We are think of fixing a few things and trying again . The Locos used were both Atlas c420's with sound (QSI). I am not sure about the air horns sounds and if prototypical or not but we used them straight out of the box. There may be a way to change CV's for a different sound will have check. With small space it was hard to get a lot of the southern tier in but I tool the main towns an such and use them as the backdrop for freelanced operations.
@bschopf17 жыл бұрын
Just wondered about them. They were very unusual. Maybe the cold southern tier air had something to do with it? Again, great job with the modeling. The layout feels and photographs like it is 40 x 40 and not 19 x 22. Really really nice work.

You sir are one OUTSTANDING MODELER! You capture a level of realism few can manage - well done! I as well agree with the positive comments regarding the video... When it first started I thought to myself, please not just another 1/4hr cab ride - and you did not disappoint. And not to nitpick (and I could be wrong) but wasn't that ex LIRR C420 with the smoke deflectors still in place set up to run long hood forward? ;)
@dnhman6 жыл бұрын
thanks very much for the kind words, appreciated, As for the C420 you could be right,, I have a lot of work to do on knowing all the prototype particualrs for both Locos and rolling stock. But hey thats the good thing about this hobby, you cant get bored with some namy aspects to understand.

@@dnhman That engine looks very much like those advertised at a train store in New Jersey very near to Philadelphia. I am not sure I am allowed to mention the business' name. In their ad they list it as a Long Island RR Alco C420, but they do not have a photo, they have a drawing. That has kept me from ordering one as the drawing shows a lousy view of the truck side frames. This reply has been done on 7-7-21.

@dnhman Жыл бұрын
Hello thanks for watching, Yes sort of, everything has to be compress for space but I tried to convey the feel of these towns when the railroads were still in some demand. Some of the industries names are taken but not modeled exactly. Just tried to capture the mood. I have made several visits to the areas for ideas.

Nice layout. You're a good modeler. How big is the layout and what area do you model? What passenger trains do you run? How come the camera on the car is off to the side at times? You think you can do a straight cabride clip of the whole route? Thumbs up!
@dnhman7 жыл бұрын
layout room is roughly 19x 22 with some staging over a crawl space. We model roughly the Susquehanna division from Oneonta to Afton. My sons had just gotten a GoPro camera and wanted to try it out on the layout, the GoPro is really too big to fit on an HO scale flat car so the view is canted somewhat. This was first try just see what happens and we are thinking about trying again after we fix some scenery and find better camera/mount to use. Just need to fond the time! Thanks for watching !!
