To start, I have to thank Shane (thebrakeman17) here on KZbin for stumbling on Josh's (NSmodeler24) video about installing locomotive engineer gauge lights in the cab. Shane saw Josh's video and wanted to try it, but he models N scale and needed some HO units to try this out on. So, the first thing he does is come to me to ask if I would offer up a couple of mine. Of course I was all for it. I was super impressed with Josh's work and would never try it on my own. So Shane didn't have to ask me twice. He's still got my other unit, so when I get that back, it'll be featured in a video too.
I also need to give some thanks to Chris for his assistance in filming this, and a couple up coming videos. He came out to the club the past two Saturdays and I let him run my trains so I could film. Especially what we got yesterday, that is going to make for a really neat video. I was able to film angles and areas I don't normally get to, because running the trains and operating the camera at the same time is pretty limiting.
But this video gave my computer a rough time. It took 13 hours and 15 minutes to render out, which is the reason I'm just now getting it posted. But its an HO scale railfanning vid with a few neat surprises. Oh, even though this is basically a "KCE" video, there's only one KCE train in it. :D
Anyway, that's about it for now. Keep an eye out for some more club stuff in the next week or two. Till then, thanks for watching!

Thanks Randy! Yes we let everyone run pretty much whatever they want. That steamer was mine actually. Our fictional railroad, the Kansas City Eastern, rosters it as an excursion unit, but in between jobs, it earns it's keep pulling freight.

Super fun to view, as always. Can't wait to see that Union Station. A big city passenger depot with lots of platforms and tracks, is a striking attraction on any model railroad.

UP 3984 is really a show-stealer! Great job. I'd like to see you do it all again with more steam and from a lower angle. Most train watching is from ground level and videos look more realistic from a lower angle.One thing missing though. Good sound like this makes the viewer wonder: "Where's the smoke?". Maybe one of these days we'll have realistic "scale" smoke. :-)

I run the UP&W a 2200 linear track feet layout in my basement. I have found that the one thing that can destroy a wonderful video is rolling stock that is wiggling. Rolling stock should rock and roll; not wiggle. You'll find that the heavier the rolling stock is the less it will jiggle. A 125,000 pound car should weigh in at 8 full ounces. Bolsters that are too loose cause cars to wiggle also. A good three point suspension is a must when doing video work. Rough track can and does destroy a video. You should go through all of the turnouts and fine tune them with no wowies in them. I get rid of all the hinges in the point rails and sharpen the points to a razors edge. Commercial turnouts are a disaster waiting to happen especially on curved turnouts. There is a little known trick called a "kicker" that guarantees that you will never derail a train in a curved turnout. The flanges of all the wheels ride up against the high rail eventually warping the point. The kicker prevents that. The railroads use them in slow speed turnouts temporarily when a switch has been run through. There is a fairly new frog called a "jump" frog. I modified some to lift the wheels a lot more gradually than the way the real railroads do it. There are no bumps or wowies in them at all and they make for some real conversation pieces. The flanges ride right over the rail head of the mainline rail and you can't tell. I run Miniature Railway Foundries & US Locomotive Works and have decided to sell the ideas that I have incorporated into my own layout. Waterfalls that use table salt as the water, and "lightning" in the backdrops with recorded thunder claps make for some real head turners when I have people over. Operating truck stops and lumber yards with real working trucks and fork lifts are all possible with a deice called the Multiple Position Rotating Circuitry "MPRC" switch. It is a belt that turns at 1 RPM with risers in the channels. These risers open and close the contacts that control the motors on the little trucks and forklifts. No micro-processors or software, just a slowly rotating belt that opens and closes switches on a given channel. They are guided magnetically "Faller" steering mechanisms and power is supplied by metal "pavement"---blackened brass sheet. If they were battery powered you would be unable to control them. The UP&W isn't even close to done but it really gets the modeling juices flowin' when they see the things that I have been able to do with it. If anyone is interested I can tell you how to do all of these nifty little things that take model railroading over the top. They are really simple!

+Wasatch Range Railway A lot of criticism for someone who doesn't post his own work. I think that this is one of the most well shot, well detailed HO scale layout videos on KZbin. Oh I also think that you are full of it with what your layout can do.
@wasatchrangerailway6921
@wasatchrangerailway6921 9 жыл бұрын
it was very well done and I did like the video and yes I can do the things I said I can do if you would like to do some of them, i can tell you how to do the things that I do like lightning---its just a box about one foot wide by about 24 inches tall with a single neon light bulb it is never allowed to start completely so it flashes. it sits behind the backdrop. the backdrop has slits cut into it in the shape of a lightning flash so when you push the switch, you get lightning. the mprc switch is just a cam switch with multiple channels. it can control any motor that you want. it will operate a forklift at a lumber yard or an 18 wheeler at truck stop several at a time. the faller guide system guides them where ever you want them to go and it controls when they move as well you can find all of the components that make it operate on e-bay it is all very, very simple. there are also moveable point frogs and spring frogs and the jump frogs are being built. I'm sorry that I sounded so critical of the video. it was really a nice layout.

hi Jason... love train #1 & not for what you think... it was the length that was impressive... Shane did an awesome job with the instrumentation .. kudos to Shane... you are right about the different camera angles ... awesome... the "H" unit train was sweet.... i have a question... besides any internal modifications that were made to a es44ac what exterior mods were made to make a C4??? .. i'm asking 'cause i want to renumber one of the es44ac's i got to 6951 which is a es44c4... thanks for sharing this great vid... vinny
@RailfanJason
@RailfanJason 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Vinny, this was a fun one. Yeah, Shane is getting to be quite ingenious with this... he's turning out to be quite handy friend to have around :D Only thing that would have made the H.U. train better would have been to have all six, rather than just four of the six, but eh, it was pretty cool as it was. As for the ES44C4s, the over all body is pretty much the same as the ES44ACs, but the C4s all have an extra brake cylinder on each truck sideframe. For me, that's the biggest spotting feature. Google images of both, and look at the sideframes. It's pretty easy to spot. Glad you enjoyed it.
