Your phrase "immersion factor" really hit home on so many levels. That's what it's all about, no matter what facet one might gravitate to. Thanks so much for sharing. Very inspirational.

Absolutely. Often times we are seduced into thinking the bigger the layout the bigger the immersion factor. Not true. Cheers.

This series helped me use modeling skills and art knowledge I already had and apply them to this hobby. But I can honestly say the single most important thing I learned here was painting absolutely everything with Tamia/iso/air. The glow, the softness, the way the colors blend, like 3D pastels&watercolors all mixed up. I just sit and stare at my board and get lost. River Road must look incredible in person.

Great to hear that. Keep pushing the genre. Shelf layouts are the trend and style now-a-days, and they are here to stay. Furthermore, I love "Last-mile" train ops in HO Scale - it rocks! On the other hand, I can just stare at River Road all day long without a single train in the area - and it keeps getting better the more I work on it. The immersion is off the charts in so many ways. Cheers ~ Boomer.

Many model railroad designs do not allow the vision angle to provide prospectives you have shown. When I designed my shelf layout I had no thought about viewing for prospective and until now I was happy with what I had, for the most part. You have opened a new door!

Your school of thought or philosophy explained here is SO important. All artists, creatives of all types, everybody apart from kids really, we all have doubts, fear of failiure etc. The only way to overcome that is by failing some more, learning from it and moving on. Repeat if and when needed. You make for a great contributor to thinking in not just the hobby. And you speak from an informed perspective. Gives you pulling power, ethos if you will. That's also why I follow your channel since the early days and recommend it to anyone who is actually willing to learn.

Your comments really sruck a cord with me. 34 years ago I built a shelf layout similar to yours. Atlas code100 and snap switches made a few kit bash half scratchbuilt structures. I was on my way picking skills in scenery and rolling stock. Then life ,children and exwife got in the way. I almost threw out my previous efforts then I said no and I am really enjoying the hobby. The last 30 plus years of arm chair modeling and buying books and magazines are paying off. Thank you I really enjoyed your video and so what if I'm 65 I'm having fun!

Thanks for sharing these thoughts. When I got back into this hobby after a 30 year break, I was totally overwhelmed thinking I needed to start with a large layout just to have fun again. I discovered shelf-style switching layouts just over a year ago, and what a blessing! So much fun can be had in such a small space, and now I'm loving the possibilities this hobby has to offer even more. I'm starting a new switching layout soon to expand my skills, and I'm really looking forward to the journey!

I couldn’t agree more ! I had a massive layout and just track maintenance and the fact that it’s never really finished. I hear you. As to your new linear "point-to-point" layout I agree. I don`t have one locomotive that has completed a circle yet. They are very low miles on the drive line as well. I'm not into modeling and I'm not into model railroads ... I have a old standard HO Märklin Starter Kit in the Basement but I never enjoyed playing with it as a kid. But I really enjoy watching how you achieve this absolute detail of realism in your models in this small scale. I've seen a few model railroad layouts but never something with this grade of detail.

Thank you for sharing. When I was a young kid I never played with the starter kit either. Once around the Christmas Tree and I traded it away for a Tonka Front End Loader with a missing wheel . . . lol. I loved the concept of the Diorama growing up and as it turned out, trains became the focus in a new way because I could model the environment as well. Trains are the actors and the layout is the stage! Once again, thanks for taking the time to comment. Cheers ~ Boomer.

I hear you! I visited an open house of a 24x36 layout about 6 months before I retired and got hooked, especially by DCC systems. I got myself "invited" to join the crew by the layout owner, bought a throttle so I could run, and the rest is history. Those guys sparked my re-boot in the hobby after a 50 year absence. It wasn't long before I knew I needed a small layout at home, just so I could program and test my growing roster of power and rolling stock. I decided on a 4x8 with a scene divider. It's essentially a 2x16 shelf layout back to back. I've found that I can put a lot of scenic detail in that little space. When I'm not tweaking that little landscape I can zone out with my coffee and just watch trains roll by, or spend an hour or so running the switching puzzle. That's what keeps it interesting because it's different every time and it helps clear out some of the cobwebs in my head. Nice job on your shelf!

One of the first questions you need to ask yourself is: Do I want to run in circles (unrealistic) or back and forth (realistic)? The reason for the question is because running in circles gets old real fast. An oval also takes up "huge" space due to the minimum radius needed to complete the loop as well. Cheers.

This Video is Inspiring Me !! My beautiful aged\weathered rolling stock and motive power been boxed up far too long! From '85 to 2010 I too had a massive basement layout. Double dogbone single mainline - 45' of mainline track which branched off to a 5 loop helix to lower level ( coal mine and Staging area). The yard stretched 7 feet making for glorious switching exercises. Your shelf Layout is what I have been dreaming of lately !!

Enjoying these so much, almost a boomer but can totally relate to all you're saying. I have a partially completed point to point layout from years ago, my problem is that it goes around 3 1/2 walls, and is actually still too big for me with 39 linear feet of track. So I'm breaking the task into small bits, currently landscaping one end of it, about 6 feet by 2 feet. Keep up the inspiration and have a great day!

Thank You. Having a budget is important in the long run. Money saved here can go there type of thing. Large layouts can be a formidable expense. Having said this, I still like to buy the odd piece of really nice equipment though. Once in a while, I will splurge on a nice locomotive or piece of rolling stock if I really like it. However, most of the subjects like buildings, scenery, etc. are all scratch built from material I had kicking around, and I generally like to weather up cheaper rolling stock and change out the couplers, etc. Cheers. ~ Boomer.

You are right about once being settled and then taking on the larger layout for sure. In a way, all I am doing is using the small footprint (shelf layout) concept to demonstrate a "signature scene" which makes up the collective whole of a larger layout in the same way you described concerning, "just focusing on one area." Staging is just the imaginary railroad which connects to the next signature scene or diorama. Cheers.

I've been wrestling with the same dilemma of whether or not to go with a small manageable layout or a larger layout with more distance that would allow some constant running of trains. I love the idea of a large layout, but like you said it's easy to get overwhelmed to the point that your layout becomes more of a burden than enjoyment. After all, why have a hobby if you can't actually relax and enjoy it. Seeing what you've done inspires me and I think has pushed me toward a smaller more detailed layout. I love the idea of a more immersive scene that actually tells a story. Really look forward to future videos. Glad I found your channel.

Thank You for sharing that so eloquently. You just expressed my exact sentiments about why I love to model on the smaller footprint. I understand the appeal to the larger layout, but they always gave me anxiety and never the peace I would seek. Now, I just love going into the small and manageable layout room while sipping my coffee. I just wish I saw the light many years ago. I would have saved alot of money and grief. Cheers.

I'm liking your idea of a highway as the visual "edge" of your layout. It has the effect of drawing one's visual focus beyond the edge of the barren blacktop to the visual drama of the the trackage and layout. It's an excellent technique! And beyond the blacktop, your layout is very well detailed and visually interesting. It grabs one's attention and holds it; there's so much detail in a small space.

Thank you Michael! The road draws the viewer into the railroad scene for sure. What is also interesting is the slight angle of the road as well. One does not notice the partiality of it. It also makes for a good camera platform as well . . . lol. Cheers

Again an interesting topic to bring up boomer, I too was looking to build a large layout then I came across modeler lance mindheim's work and it changed my prospective on shelf layouts since I was living in a tiny one bedroom apartment at the time.Plus the time saving techniques of getting something up and running in days to a couple of weeks VS months and possibility years are a lot better than getting frustrated and losing interest in the hobby and keeping cost down.

Thank You Paul. It`s evolving at a calm steady pace. The whimsical approach allows me to think freely about each subsequent detail. I am really enjoying the process and the small manageable nature of it`s footprint. Glad to hear you are as well. Cheers.

big prijects cost a lot of money and maintanance... to focus on a small layout where zou can easy spend 30-60 minutes and your operation is done for the day, makes it more comfortable to start. I had a pause of 25 years now because of moving around to different jobs... brother and me got the first railroad, just 2 seperat circles from our parents when we was 6 and 3 i think... the old stuff still exist at my brothers place, evolved in the years until we got 20/17 about... today am i more interested in showing something more real than to have long trains which need a lot of space....

You could add lit street light's between the track area & street do some night shots then or video. But you hit all nail's on the head, you don't need a large layout that will never get done. Start small & work your way up as you go .

Thank You for reminding me about that! You are so right. Street lamps would be fantastic. I do have them already. I just don`t want to add them yet otherwise I`ll knock them over since they are foreground features. But, yes, Thank You! - Boomer.

The big "classical" layout is quickly growing out of style. A few do it but it is not as mainstream as it used to be. They require and overwhelming amount of time and resources. Not to mention the shear price of everything. Go small and have more fun and less stress.

The cost of the average locomotive today is just OMG!!! I've noticed some large knobs on the side of this module. Are these the turnout controls?? Do you have a video about how you made and installed them??? I'd really like to see one.

@boomerdiorama 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lucas. The Burrard Bridge Façade in Kitsilano definitely is inspired from the water front. I grew up in Kitsilano during the 60's, 70's and 80's. From there on out, the inspiration goes through New Westminster and Langley (Fraser Valley) along the (SRY) Southern British Columbia Railway. Cheers. - Boomer

Do you use cork track bedding on this layout?
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama 2 жыл бұрын
No. I just glued the track onto the plywood and then attached pieces of insulation foam underneath certain areas where I wanted to deaden sound. However, I found very little difference in sound deadening when everything was done. It ran quiet anyway. It probably makes sense to lay cork on larger layouts with longer running trains. I did with River Road. Shelf layouts are quiet, despite the underlying layers, due to slower movement and shorter distances. ;-)
@cyberpunkdarren

@@boomerdiorama gotcha. Do you need bedding to properly ballast? I'm new. Sorry for dumb questions.
@boomerdiorama

@@cyberpunkdarren No worries. Not if you want the "flat" yard look. Just leave a slight depression in the ballast between tracks and it looks fine.

Do you have other trains as well as the four locomotives that you’re using? I’m into passenger trains rather than goods.
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama 3 жыл бұрын
If you mean locomotives. Yes I do. I am mostly focused on Generation 2 Freight locomotives. They lend themselves more appropriately to small shelf layouts like this. I just don`t have the room to model passenger cars the way I would like to, other than having a random passenger car on a siding. Cheers.

@Madonsteamrailways 3 жыл бұрын
@@boomerdiorama Well over here in the United Kingdom, we have a rather small passenger train called a diesel or electric multiple unit. It’s much more compact than the type of passenger train in America. I apologise for not realising that your videos are not shot over here in the U.K.!! On top of that, we also have pre-grouping six and four wheeled carriages to run behind our small locomotives. Was that ever the case over there?
@boomerdiorama

@@Madonsteamrailways I don't think so. Unless they were narrow guage mining cars etc. Most mainline units like cars were two truck/four axle stuff. Cheers.

is that the SRY rail link locomotives, your layout looks like B.C.
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the model locomotives are part of the active SRY roster in New Westminster, B.C. Canada. They are kit-bashed and custom painted. Except, the paint livery (and older logo) is from 2010-12 just before the current re-paint and the red (SRY) "meatball" logo. The period I am presently modeling is around 2010 with mostly older "short line" rolling stock. Cheers.
