The gate story sounded pretty good until Karen showed up with the bolt cutters. There are no locks on an automated gate system. The system itself secures the gates, and it would be highly impractical to have to jump out of the car, unlock the gate, operate auto system, then pull through the gate, and jump back out of the car to replace the lock once the gate closes, and then drive away. Methinks the story was penned by Grimm, or Aesop, because it surely is a fairy tale.

The priest should have refused absolution at the second time "confess and be sorry". They weren't sorry, if it's no true confession there's no seal.

I'm not sure they can officially declare someone to be un-sorry if they said they were. However, what he *could* do would be to assign the same type of penance as the requirement for absolution that he would have used as school discipline anyway. You want to give them detention after school every day for a week? "Very well. Your penance is to stay after school for two hours every day this week, praying the rosary." Serves exactly the same purpose, and assigning penance is the one way in which priests *are* allowed to act on what they hear in confessional.

@ a priest refused me absolution because I was on birth control to regulate my cycles, just before my wedding. My fiancé cousin was our officiant and a priest who granted me absolution over the phone(I was 20 and in tears)

@@heypatk Understood, but (even though I think that was garbage of him to do, I'm trying to think from his perspective for a moment) you were telling him about concrete evidence that, at that moment, you were not trying to change the behavior. You were, after all, still using the stuff, and intended to continue doing so. If it's behavior that happened over the weekend, then on any given Monday someone *could* legitimately have repented and intended never to do it again -- even if it wasn't terribly likely.

All of these Karen neighbor stories are designed for one purpose: to reinforce the concept in listeners' minds that property owners are the good guys. And, in limited types of cases, they are -- which is why those are the cases that actually get stories about them. We don't get slumlord stories, or stories about companies which destroy the supply of safe drinking water for an entire city by dumping toxic chemicals into the water table, or anything of that sort. But they happen.

You gotta love new management. They don't take the time to learn how things work. Then proceed to alienate the people and policies that make things work. Then they're clueless as to why things don't work any more. Often times it turns out they're not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Seen it, business was booming, owner was getting too old, sold it, new owner made major changes and didn't understand why everything failed, it ended with the old owner leaving retirement and buying it back for "pennies on the dollar" (something about they had breached the buying contract, some things had to be kept and maintained and was not allowed to be changed for a number of years, due to the breach he could force the buy-back at the business current value, from how I uunderstood it) and found and trained a successor to take over, he could not stand to see the business he had founded and build up with his own blood, sweat and tears be mishandled like that.

Gate Story: It's remarkable how much OP is patting himself on the back twice and three times for how brilliant and super and generally great he defeated Karen with his great plan to build a GATE and how much everyone likes him now and did I already say how brilliant and great and super he did it? This eternal self-praise at the end of the stories is annoying when the OPs are beating themselves up about how much they've learnt that communities should stick together and that you should stand up to bullies (what else ?!), but in this case it's really tiring. -.-

Who still uses a keypad at a gate, pretty much the only place that does is a place with a central entrance, for things like delivery drivers, but the vast majority have gone to wireless remote controls, or use an app on the phone to do this.
