Rule of thumb, ALWAYS keep the mail as it helps establish a pattern of harrasment. The actual problem, as HOAs help defray city, county, and state costs, many courts will refuse to do anything about the transgressions of the HOA

@@KingSteven26 Too many believe all blind people are the same. Some wear the sunglasses, because they know their eyes are disturbing. I don't think they need to, personally. Sadly since some do many assume all do. It also might be an assumption from the media using the glasses to hide the actor's working eyes from the audience. Increasing the feeling the character is really blind.

Why would there be a question about whether or not you can sue the hoa without being a member? If an hoa illegally dumped waste on private property they can be sued, if they damage someones property, if the assault a utilities worker, if they trespass upon private property etc. Thats like saying i couldn't sue the gym upstairs when there equipment falls though the floor into my business, because I'm not a member of the gym.

All those creeps should have gone to jail considering how much damage they did as well as ther other crimes. As to the entitled idiot she should be charged with harassment and theft for stealing the cane and if possible any charges for a crime against a disabled person. I have been shopping and felt a cane gently touch my leg. I will respond quietly saying I am off to your right and do you need anything. As for people living in a hoa (lower case letters) there are books written by George Hayduke : the complete book of dirty tricks and getting even. They are only for humorous reading.

I went through a transition to being blind (not visually impaired, but blind) as an adult. There was an incident where a person stepped on my cane and broke it while I was walking along a train platform on my way home from work. The person did not stop or apologize. I did not have a spare. A stranger had to help me get to my bus connection so that I could get the rest of the way home. And yes, I carry a spare now. That's just one of the things blind people have to learn to do. A carbon-fibre mobility cane costs $57 in Canada. Being without a cane is disorienting and frightening when outside the home and dangerous around moving vehicles of any kind. Most people are decent and will help a blind person in distress. And yes, I have run into people that accuse me of faking it because I don't wear giant dark glasses. Yes, some people are just that ignorant. The purpose of the cane is just as much to signal to other people that I cannot see as it is a device to help me navigate.

How could a husband, knowing a person is blind and never ventured out on their own, send them to a store to pick up something without assistants until they were able to tackle it on their own. If OP had recently become blind, wouldn't they at least have a shadow to see if op has learn to do it themselves to insure they are ready to do it on their own? I can understand that some things have braille, but that is something to learn as well. The kid was a brat and the mother an enabler. The pair should have been banned from the store and charged with disabled abuse.

I would love to agree it's total fiction, but I live in a development with an HOA - one of the reasons I disagreed with my husband about buying there. I've seen some unbelievable, illegal, corrupt behavior. Since we live in the "low income" section we have more ridiculous rules and violations than the rest of the development. The corrupt behavior is shocking - apparently they believe anyone living in low income housing either doesn't have a brain or can't afford to fight them. They've charged $800 "fee" for sending a form letter, allowed the shrubbery to grow over the windows - almost 10 feet high - so anyone on the first floor feels like you live in a cave, have someone come and install "speed bumps" right outside the entrance to the parking lot in June (as if anyone here owns a vehicle that can go from 0 to 60mph in 30 seconds) that are basically squared off curbs that have broken tie rods, destroyed alignment (none of which is easy to prove) and then take them out in October/November so the plow can get through - I could give you a very long list. The best one had to be when they sent a letter stating I would be fined for having my TV antenna outside the window. I had to secure it to the AC holder of my upstairs neighbor because - you guessed it - they refused to replace the hedges (used to live with a landscaper - they only last about 7-8 years and then have to be replaced) allowing them to grow over 10 feet which blocked any signal from getting through. I guess I was supposed to live without any TV at all unless I could pay for cable. Naturally being in low income housing I couldn't afford almost $300 a month for cable TV. They have raised the fee from approximately $70 per month when we first moved here 20 years ago to about &200 per month now. For this you get garbage pickup and you're supposed to get plowing, which is crappy at best. They shove all the snow against the curb in front of the building where you park leaving exits only at the end of the 2 buildings. Therefore you have to walk the length of the building on a sidewalk that's shoveled poorly and often icy, then walk through a slippery parking lot all the way back to your car. When my husband was alive and we had a bad storm he would shovel out my car and a couple other single, senior ladies' cars, then make cuts from the sidewalk to the parking lot every other car so we could get in and out without having to risk falling. Both my neighbor and I use a cane - we are both legally handicapped. The handicapped parking is right in the middle of the 2 buildings - but the ramps are located ONLY at either end. What rocket scientist came up with this idea? The handicapped parking is merely a "courtesy sign" with no legal enforcement behind it. Anyone can park there and can't be ticketed or fined as it isn't a legal DMV sign, so it's irrelevant. Neither of us needs to use a wheelchair, thank God, as there is no way to get above the second floor if you need one. The place is falling apart, the hallway in the laundry has flooded for years after a hard rain or several days of rain. This is located in a wooded area. We have deer, turkey, fox, raccoon, bears - you name it. My husband and I grew up in the woods and we don't mind - but we also know better than to leave garbage out to attract wildlife. There's a small building that holds 2 dumpsters and all the mailboxes. It has a garage type door so the company can empty the dumpsters. That door is left open more nights than not, creating a veritable "raccoon buffet" as I like to call it. Don't bother calling the office with complaints. Most of the time they don't answer the phone, they just let the machine take the message. You could wait forever for a call back. If you do contact them about a problem you're ignored. They have intrusive rules that are senseless. We were painting and had taken all the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors down to paint. It was very obvious that we were painting. They came in to "inspect" that we had the stupid things. Upon seeing and being told that the home was being painted they went ahead and fined us anyway. I figured it was worth the $20 just to get rid of them. They came back to "reinspect". Turned out the inspector, who was a pretty quiet, non-aggressive type had his girlfriend along both times. She was the nasty, rude one who demanded we let her in RIGHT NOW OR ELSE!, didn't even work for the state inspection company, had a fake ID around her neck and "wrote us up for failure to comply". At the reinspection the smoke detectors were up and worked just fine. Until she banged on the one in the hallway with a stick, and then all of a sudden it didn't work (gee, I wonder why?) at which point she tried to coerce me into taking a card from some business (hmm - is it possible she knew them? And got a kickback?) to come in and "properly install them". And don't worry it doesn't cost that much. At this point my husband had crossed the river. I just wanted to sell and get out as I couldn't afford to live there alone. I absolutely couldn't afford to pay someone to come in and install smoke detectors - which really isn't that difficult in the first place since it was a matter of just replacing the batteries, they were up when we bought the place. BTW, the damn things were a PIA, went off all the time when we cooked, we NEVER used them anyway. Once "inspection" was over my husband always took all the batteries out. We both loved to cook, my husband was an amateur gourmet - he made seared Ahi tuna at least once a week because I loved it so much. We got sick and tired of the detectors constantly going off. I'm sure our neighbors appreciates him dismantling them as well - who wants to hear that? There are a bunch of rules we are subject to that non-low income housing is not - such as not being allowed to use a grill in the nicer weather even though we have plenty of yard space, not being allowed to have wind chimes or holiday lights or holiday decorations - just petty crap because it's "the poor section". I lost my beloved 2 years ago this December and I can't wait to leave here. I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER live any place with an HOA again. I'd rather live in a tent in the woods. And I'm pushing 70! They are evil, run by evil, petty, power tripping people. When I hear these stories I find them completely believable. Even in my area there are stories about HOAs coming in and trying to coerce people into signing up. If you have the misfortune to be in the middle of one, and all your neighbors have been intimidated into joining, they can and will make your life hell until you join or move. In my opinion they should all be disbanded and made illegal. Originally a genuinely good intentioned idea destroyed and made criminal by power tripping Karens and corrupt lawyers. Since they seem to attract the worst sort of people to run them, they need to go.

Yeah... that first story is highly illegal. I have to question the legality of having what's essentially an armed police run by the HOA, without any real legal backing or authority. I can just imagine a group of "police", running around with guns and in knock-off tactical gear, busting in people's doors and attempting to "arrest" people for HOA dues or fees. All of which is highly illegal. Assuming this takes place in America (Because it's the laws I'm most familiar with), you have breaking and entering, trespassing, assault with a deadly weapon, and, if they actually tried to "arrest" anyone, you could add kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment to the list. And unlike an HOA security force, which has it's own inherent value to the community, a "police" force working under the HOA and performing unlawful raids would have no real value to the community as it comes off as being the HOA's personal hit squad. The reasons police can do raids and the like is because they have legal paperwork backing them up; paperwork a judge signed and handed off so if they're ever under scrutiny, they can show what evidence lead to them getting a warrant, the warrant itself, the judge who signed it, etc. This sort of backing gives the police a sense of legality; one of legitimacy because every piece of paperwork will also say what they can and cannot do. Like the police can break down your door if necessary to get inside; they cannot blow up a wall to do so; that's just unreasonable. But these illegal cops wouldn't have that, especially if they're going around with weapons and enforcing HOA policy, even on people they have no legal recourse against. HOAs can do a lot of things, but only with people under the HOA. If you're not in the HOA, they cannot, legally, do anything. Which would cover their little police force too.
