So satisfying to see her letting go of so much. She’ll never miss what she didn’t know she had or used. This is her first pass through and she’ll probably let go of more in the future 😊

Yes! It takes three rounds on average for most people bc the first time you show your brain it's possible to let go, the second time you can remind your brain how good it felt last time, and by the third time you're a pro! 😁

I am in the same situation. We've lived in this house since 1989. My parents have retired to another state and have left me with the house - and 40 years worth of stuff! I was doing really well decluttering, but I got burned out. Watching you do the same thing has inspired me to start working on it again! My suggestion for the utensil drawers is expandable drawer dividers, used the long way. That way you can group the spatulas, knives, tongs, serving spoons, etc. It's made putting things away SO much easier for me!

I'm so impressed with your gentle and graceful approach to helping your Mom and Dad. Shame never works, anger is a waste, and regret just stalls progress. Your methodical approach was perfect and I love the family humor mixed in with the tasks. You definitely have a calling for this kind of work. I'm so glad your parents are ready to move on with their stuff. Congratulations to everyone for getting this off the ground!

My mom bought me a new pair of oven mitts about 5 years ago. My old ones still function perfectly, they're just stained, so I keep using them. Whenever my mom comes over to visit she comments that the new oven mitts are going to be buried with me 😅

A big thank you to your mom & dad for sharing this process with us. You're a sweet daughter to help your parents with this chore. My husband spent 21 years in the military so we had to declutter every 3 to 6 years (thank goodness) . My grandparents lived in the same house from 1950 to 1988. They were from the depression era and would NOT let us grandkids help with getting rid of anything 😅. It was a nightmare for my mom when they passed. Goid thinking of your parents to start now!😊😊

I do have one friend who has offered but it’s such a mess, and I’m too embarrassed ,I can’t do much cause I’m disabled, not able to stand , or bend just can’t do much of anything. You two were a great team. You removed every shelf and cabinet, handed things to your mom, decisions were made, and items sorted for keep, trash, or donate. And of course the kitties supervised. On cleaning the lazy Susans, Dawn Powerwash and a scrubby sponge will clean all that. Let the Dawn Powerwash sit for a bit.

My kitchen looks similar to your Mom's - orangey-wood cabinets and white appliances. I wanted to modernize it a bit, so I researched what color brings down the appearance of the orange wood, and I painted the kitchen an olive-based khaki/brown color. Sounds crazy, but it looks great! I replaced the cabinet hardware with modern dark metal knobs and handles. I used a de-greaser on the top of the cabinets (Superclean). And where the wood was water-stained or worn, I put a light coat of a matching wood stain on it. It looks like a different kitchen, for very little money!

I use dish soap (from the bottle, full strength) and a green scrubby. If that doesn't take care of it, not much will :) I'd prefer not to use cleaners that make me cough. I clean up with a cotton (not microfiber) dish cloth or wash cloth, rinsing regularly with warm water. Your mom is a super hero making all those decisions and following through immediately. My daughter and daughter in law help me with this type job a couple of times a year and I appreciate it so much. We make a family day out of it and they bring the kids (8 of them, haha - and yes, loads of fun and just the right amount of distraction). I like to "tell the story" or whatever of the item and so many times that frees me from holding on to it. Sometimes they adopt the item but they don't feel like they "have" to. We try to plan it so that we can take the items to our favorite local place to give to others on the same day. And, they "do" windows and walls. Not kidding. They've said that it is fun to do it now but not so fun if I was dead, which is nice, I think?

What a truly lovely way to spend time together, make precious memories together and also improve day to day life, all in one. You've made me tear up a little remembering precious times with my own amazing mother RIP, when she'd be doing a spring clean and in the summer renovating or redecorating rooms in our house. I used to absolutely love it, I'd clean my room from top to bottom and help her out in whatever way possible. To this day, smelling fresh paint in a room reminds me of those carefree summer days. Thank you for the reminder. Many blessings to you and your family ❤

Absolutely incredible job ladies! I know it was a lot of work but I'm sure it was so worth it. One decluttering tip I have used over the years is to keep just the essentials - especially in the kitchen - and box up everything else and put dates on the box. Then I set an amount of time that I will allow myself to keep the box of stuff I never use. Of course, I would go into the boxes and take things out that I needed. Everything else turned out to be stuff I could get rid of.

Trash bags are dangerous to kids too. I would only store soild plastic item with no small parts that might come off if broken. If you get a basket, either clear, plastic or wicker and put the bags in the basket and put them up in the cabinets it would be better. Or just put safety lockers on all the drawers. It doesn't take long until little ones will climb to get into a drawer or cabinet. On the turn table your dad could be spray can of paint for plastic and lightly spray those turn tables. He would need to take painters tape, and wrap it around the metal pole in the middle, to protect it. Your mom did a great job decluttering🎉!! You are super sweet to help her ❤.

love Love LOVE the decluttering at your mom's house. I am newly retired and this is giving me inspiration to get going on mine. I'm not a fan of the lazy susans either but I have one that is pretty much identical to your mom's. Assuming it's color safe a good product to use is Soft Scrub with bleach. It's thinner than regular Soft Scrub. Put a good coating of it on the stains and let it sit a while. Then scrub and wipe it up. Good Luck.
