Roy is very selfish to impose this on his wife. I don't think I could stand it, I would have to leave. His is obviously a psychological condition and he needs to get it treated for the sake of his marriage.

I'd say the only rule is that the horde should be not be a burden for the hoarder or his/her family. The possessions/collections should be a hobby, or otherwise enjoyable. Once they are a millstone, what's the point?

I'm not a hoarder, but I am a pack rat. There are rules that must be followed. Keep standards high; both in what you pack and how you display If it has no significant value, pitch it No storage: If you cant display it, dont pack it Pick themes and pack accordingly, dont just grab anything Know your themes and packings like a professor Dont go for top prices for your packings (buying or selling) "Too good to throw away" is no excuse. Thats what Goodwill is for A good packrat knows when to let go

one time I found a desktop computer in a garbage bin... since then I started checking garbage bins more often and finding more desktops, laptops, electronic stuffs, good used clothes sometimes new, recyclables where I make about $70 a week.......good thing I had to migrate to another place where I can not do that now....but I still miss the times when I need something I know 90% of the time I have it

I don't understand how she takes it. I couldn't live like that. If it were me, I'd wait until he had to go out of town to visit someone and I'd CLEAR HOUSE. There's no getting through to a hoarder it seems but to tell you the truth I'd nip it in the bud from the getty go. I wouldn't have let it progress this far. It would be better for her to get a 2nd home or apartment and tell him he can come stay but he can't bring ANYTHING with him except for the clothes on his back.

It wouldn't work. You would just infuriate him and it would be filled back up immediately. It's a mental illness, not something that is purposely done.

0:05 a ripped pair of pants 'that need repairing' are no good if they are not repaired. That's why they are torn, they are trashed. If fixed, it will be torn again. Start over, get a new pair of pants. Toss out the stuff. But it's easier said than done. Have to find out why a person seems to need to keep these things. If tossed, are you breaking a memory? Feelings are involved. Once feelings are exposed then healing can begin;)

Hoarders have an attachment to objects. They don't follow rules about how to throw stuff out. They have memories attached to each object. They can't throw anything away. They transfer feelings to each object. They are not stubborn, they are not lazy, they are not selfish. They have an illness. Many have had traumatic experiences as children or young adults. The comments from some of these viewers tells me they know nothing about this condition. Hoarders are definitely not packrats!

Wow what an amazing video! I feel for these people, I have OCD but the opposite end of the spectrum, I am a neat freak and I do not do well w/ a lot of people in my home, such as having a party. I get anxious and feel as though I will have a panic attack. OCD is a tough thing but you can get through it, I recommend cognitive behavior therapy it has positive out comes for many people. God Bless you all

Yeah, thats the goal. But since hoarders can't recognize when they reach that state. That's what concrete rules are for. It's a guidline to keep from that point. For instance, my themes are minerals (with a heavy focus on cut and uncut precious gems and geodes), pre-1900s bottles, and a tangent on fireworks. By these rules I have amassed many thousands of dollars of collectables on a minimum budget and all are nicely -displayed- (not stored) in a single walk-in closet.

I hate clutter but my two hot spots are the kitchen junk drawer and my purse and watching these motivates me to do those two tasks asap :) I feel sad for these people and pray they will get the help they need- none of us is perfect and we all need help sometimes, so hopefully people will stop condemning these hoarder types and try to get them help instead.

My grandfather is like this. I remember I went to school for two years and I lived with him. But before I could move in, I had to clean out one of the rooms to be able to live in it. The whole room was a sea of stuff going all the way up to my waist. I threw everything in the trash.

cuddley, From reading your replies I can tell you know very well how difficult it is dealing with a hoarder. My sister is also a hoarder of the worst kind (there are different degrees, or levels, of hoarding). She is a recluse. If anyone even moves something from the piles of stuff she goes crazy. This has been going on for 25 yrs.

I do not think this man was being selfish and robynsegg you might need to understand that there are different types of hoarders. Many are just lazy, living in their own rubbish and filth. This man lost his job as a computer programmer which in the later years of your life can be devastating. His home is not dirty just full of bikes. He suffers OCD but does not harm to anyone with his type.

My father has this thing. Last year he had a sickness and he is on a wheelchair now, so I went to his house and threw all his shit away, while he was sitting there unable to do anything and saying "Wait wait wait... are you sure you can throw that?" and I was all like "Yeah, don't worry dad, it's just some trash." Took me three days. Now once in a while he asks me for some thing I threw away, but it was worth it.

My brother's been a hoarder since early childhood (as early as I can remember, he is 5 years older than I am). Now he's 52- I haven't gone into his house for at least 6 years-no one does. Just a matter of time before the health department declares his house unfit for human occupancy. Or it all falls in on him because I don't think it can bear the weight of his junk, much of which is machine tools, compressors, really heavy stuff and his house is over 100 years old.

I'm worried about the state of one of my brother's house. No one has been allowed inside for years and my mom said that it was really cluttered, which isn't like him. Now that he's disabled, I worry about him falling and not being able to reach the phone. How's your brother doing now?

While it's recently been discovered that Serotonin may play a significant role in some types of OCD, the PET scan of a hoarder differs from those with other OCD or OCPD symptoms. BUT, that is a break-through. Hopefully there will soon be others.

Well I can tell you from being a landlord it's an issue. I co-own several apartment buildings that were built in the late 90's and they are in a very nice part of a small town about an hour from L. A. & we have had issues with this. We inspect apartments at least once per year & are in them for maintenance and repairs from time to time. We have had to evict several people and you would not have a clue that they were this way when you leased the apt to them, They can ruin an apartment with junk.

it's so hard because telling a hoarder to stop collecting stuff and to get rid of it is like telling an anorexic to just eat- it doesn't work, it doesn't solve the problem. But at the same time, you can't allow someone to be drastically underweight just like you can't allow someone to live in all that filth- but I think they need to move slower, give him time to understand why he hoards, because at that rate, he'll just start it again

I visit third world countries and they do have these mental problems. I agree, they do not get treatment. This problem becomes worse with age and in third world countries they don't live as long. I know someone (mid 60s) with these hoarding traits and encourage him to donate, share and sell. Sometimes he will let me do that for him. He is brilliant but there seems to be something (mentally) missing to enable him to sort and organize. It's so sad. He is a bachelor. No one can live with him.

@Therzroomattheback You wouldn't be saying that if you lived next door to one of these people. I've seen cases where these people will have infestations of roaches that will spill out and affect their neighbors. Plus, living like that is an extreme fire hazard. Why should someone else have roaches and their house burning down because their neighbors choose to live in filth?

That would be a lot easier, but they'd have a rebound collection growing stronger. I would never agree to clean while the person is there. You cannot ask hoarders to clean out stuff themselves they'll work on a small box and remove 20% of it that can be removed and later put most of it back. The hoarder needs a year vacation and come back to a few real things he desires. Possibly never to go back to same home. Just my opinion. All these people are putting tremendous obsticles to success by clearing stuff with them there and not moving them out!! Just my take
