I was a paper hoarder to the first degree. And I became like a she wolf if anyone even touched my hoard. This came about after my Mothers death. After many years I was finally able to get a handle on it and thin the majority of it out and was able to keep it contained in one spot instead of the whole house. I still have my beloved newspaper articles and items I enjoy reading but I keep them in scrapbooks and in a large plastic bin that I thin out periodically.

EXACTLY. I worked under a Certified Social Worker in a Work-Study position for a Permanent Housing Program as a Counseling Psychology student. You are 100% correct. I had the opportunity to be an aide to a hoarder. She claimed sexual abuse, she had undergone loss/trauma, and she claimed to have a very strained relationship with her mother (which was largely based on her hoarding, so it was kind of an endless cycle). Counseling her regarding her past... It was like chipping at an iceberg.

thanks. its a slow process and you just got to look at everything, your stuff, your future. as stuff goes out the door, the weight lifts off your shoulders. i find i am spending more time with friends, going out, its great. i cant wait till i only own the bare essentials of life. meanwhile, i watch these shows and get better.

its not easy, people think that just throwing things away fixes all but i know what its like to treasure something thats absulutely useless and has no part in your life. i am gradualy clearing out stuff and my mental health appears to be improving. these shows have been so helpfull to me.

If you have a relative who is a hoarder, there is really very little you can do so let's not blame any of the relatives. My brother needs help on so many levels- my final "intervention" is buying a family vacation house in which he can live but NOT his stuff (which has to stay at his dump, about 1 hr. away). I am paying for a cleaning service and lawn service which will come weekly. My mother will come and stay on weekends/summer; family will come on holidays. This is my last effort...
@erbiumfiber13 жыл бұрын
@101Volts. Thanks, I'll check into it- but like so many hoarders, (especially the guys), the junk they pick up is "valuable." It just needs to be fixed up and then it can be sold for a huge profit. So...no hoarding, it's just a "home business" (never mind that nothing has ever been sold his whole life, it's going to happen some day- and the stuff that can't be fixed is saved for "spare parts." Yup, huge denial...

Oh this really makes me cry! I love psychology...love it! These people just need understanding & love. This is no different than an addiction, no different than compulsive eating, or not eating, It is an issue of depression, anxiety, lack of control and maybe even traumatic events that occured in these ppl. lives.

@Burnz2much If you watch these shows, these people have HUGE social interaction problems and tend to be isolated from family and friends or just don't have any (yes, for some, hoarding drove them away but for others a loved one passed away or some other trauma so they became hoarders). So I think getting more positive social interactions in their lives is really critical. Also they need to see how "normal" people live and interact, away from their piles of junk. It's a start.
@erbiumfiber13 жыл бұрын
@Burnz2much Well, it is now 5 months after buying the house and it is REALLY working out. Family has been to visit and my brother is MUCH less isolated (because you can't really invite people over to your hoarder dump). His junk is NOT in the new house and even his DOGS love it because they can move around! He is not going to ever change at his house but he is getting a taste of normality which is positive. I do it all for my mother, who worries about him. I would do anything for my mother
@gillianbrookwell16784 жыл бұрын
It is the most frustrating and tiresome life having to live with a hoarder. My 40 year marriage is over due partly to my husband's compulsive hoarding. I used to put a couple of bags full of what I thought was junk out for the bin collection only to find it back in the house days later in a different place.
@erbiumfiber12 жыл бұрын
Update- house is sitting there, ready and waiting- my brother won't move in because he can't bring all his STUFF (especially his tractors, backhoe, etc.). So we use it as a vacation house (that has worked) and offered to get him a place with NO restrictions on use (could run a "business") but every place falls short. I don't think he will ever move, it's pretty sad. The house will fall down soon or be condemned. Yes, it is a strange and serious illness that consumes his life.

The solution I found for my hoarding aunt was to move her to an assisted living place where they had regular inspections of the residents apartment.It seems to be quite common in the elderly.
@iadorenewyork15 жыл бұрын
My Mom, who has a bit of a problem and history of cluttering, lives in government housing, where there are inspections of the apartments. If a resident’s apartment condition doesn’t’t “pass”, there’s a warning. If it isn’t rectified soon, they are evicted! Severe ... but it gets my mother in gear!
@erbiumfiber13 жыл бұрын
@Burnz2much Yes, I have been financially fortuntate, also the drop in prices made it very cheap and maybe, just maybe, it will appreciate by the time I retire. It has a ton of land and my brother is making all kinds of plans to build a barn (just NOT put junk in it, this much he knows) and clearing out the wooded parts and fixing things up. MUCH healthier than how he was living- he still goes "home" to play with his compressors, etc. but he is emotionally better with more family around.

We dont have bad teeth, they are natural. Most Americans use bleach or enamel facings to their teeth, giving them an un-natural whiteness. A lot also use dental surgery that would be deemed very unnecessary in the UK. In the Uk we have a NHS dental service and a small private service, therefore only necessay work is carried out. There are 100s of shades of teeth through the white, cream range, in America you dont see this just bleach whiteness.

The lovely lady from the 1st story has the advantage of her city apparently letting people just leave the rubbish bags outside of their houses on the street - it shall help her save a lot of hassle of hiring a skip and having to fill it up and remove under a strict deadline. ...I often think town-halls do not offer enough possibilities to put away, resell and recycle all the unused stuff people (and not only hoarders) need to get rid of nowadays in order to keep their houses clutter-free. ...Meanwhile letting it on the street looks horrible for the people walking at night.

Almost all hoarders are avoiding some emotional past, usually sexual / physical abuse, sometimes the death of a close relative, a near-death event (fire, accident, etc.) or some other trauma which has instigated this coniditon which they won't address cuz it'll hurt emotionally. Tough shit, they need to suffer to move forward like addicts suffering withdrawal. The crux is that they have to WANT help, or at least to change & move forward instead of standing still.

I think that hoarding is partially a consequence of affluence. I don't think you have this problem in 3rd world countries. I think the difference between 1st world hoarders and 3rd world people is that our (1st world) hoarders keep stuff that would be "auctioned off" in the 3rd world.

@zackboomer I've been to the UK many times. I haven't noticed any more people there running around with hideous teeth than I've sen here. Hideous teeth being rotten or horrible twisted and crooked. Bleaching teeth to an artificial bright white I don't consider as a hygenic thing - actually that can damage the enamel and eventually lead to all kinds of unpleasant problems. Regular cleanings and so forth are one thing, but that bleaching can cause problems if it is done on a regular basis.

That's AMAZING of you! These people have mental illnesses which are so hard for us to understand, practically impossible. I still don't understand how they can choose their things over their families once given ultimatums: "us or the stuff". Make them adhere to new laws of not bringing new stuff home & police them once a week or once a month, as if it were an actual law. It's easy to clear out a place, but useless if they're just gonna relapse the next day. Any thoughts?

@iftyshifty It is a common generalization, due to the fact most do. It's ok, I would rather have bad teeth then contribute tax's to the murder of innocent's around the world, or in some cases actually carrying it out.
