On the Hobbiton film set (now preserved as a tourist attraction) outside Matamata (about half way between Hamilton and Tauranga), New Zealand, they've got the actual Green Dragon inn built and operating as a licensed bar and restaurant. The tour guide said that the film crew burned the Green Dragon down roughly five times while filming the scourging of the Shire, and it only made it into the films as Frodo's vision in Galadriel's Mirror.

I’m an Irish historian based in Carlow County. While writing an article on Carlow Town and its castle, I spent a good amount of time going through old editions of the local history journal to get a feel for what had already been written about the topic. Long story short, I went down a rabbit hole or ten, and found myself reading up on coaching inns: spots where stage coach horses could be changed between long journeys by carriage while the passengers and driver took a bite to eat and a drop to drink. One of the main ones was located on the Kilkenny Road - funny enough, where the university is now - and according to the old Ordinance Survey maps, the inn was called… The Green Dragon. Carlow has an underground - pardon the pun - Hobbit population, for sure! (Didn’t Tolkien say that Hobbits still inhabited the world of Men, but that we’re too noisy to notice? You’d wonder… 😉)
