Technically, Tauriel isn't a made-up character for Jackson's movie of THE HOBBIT. In the book there was a Captain of the Guard in the Elvenking Thrainduel's employ, but the character was unnamed, was male, and was merely a cameo. Jackson merely expanded on the character.

I like Evangeline, but I've never been a big fan of book adaptation film characters that were made up to appeal to a certain fan base. What they did with Arwen in the original trilogy was fine because she was an established book character, even if her part was considerably fleshed out, but the idea of Tauriel just doesn't appeal to me at all.

I agree with Lily's view that the STAR WARS prequels were an abomination. And although I don't see Tauriel as the "JarJar Binks" exactly (Radagast is a lot closer to that dubious title), I don't exactly see her as necessary either.

meh, I don't mind her like I minded Liv Tyler, because Liv Tyler wrote over Glorfindel, my favourite non-main character from the book. It's especially in issue in the Hobbit when the only named female character is Belladonna Took, Bilbo's mother, and only in passing.
