The Hobbiton Movie Set was a significant location used for the “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy and “The Hobbit” film trilogy, situated on a family run farm in New Zealand’s Waikato region. It has become an established Tolkien tourism destination where visitors can enjoy a guided tour of the set.
In 1998 Peter Jackson’s location scouts began searching for suitable sites for the “Lord of the Rings” film series, when they spotted the Alexander Farm, they concluded it had the ancient England appearance they were looking for.
The original set was not built to last, the hobbit hole facades having been constructed from untreated timber, ply and polystyrene and partially dismantled after filming. The set was rebuilt using more permanent materials for “The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey”.
In 2002 Guided tours of the 5.5 hectares (14 acres) movie set site commenced and continue to this day.
