Orange is not only narrow in our minds in terms of hue position (i.e. it becomes "red" or "yellow" pretty fast as we move around the colour wheel, but also limited in terms of tone (i.e. where terms like "beige" and "brown" are fundamentally used instead). In fact, I work in gemstones and had to convince a jewellery student who was asking where "brown" (or "dark orange") was on the colour spectrum by getting her to open MS Paint, pick the brightest orange default colour and then pull the tone scale down towards the black end of the spectrum. We simply don't imagine "dark orange" in the way we would, say, "dark blue" or "dark green". "Pink" is an even bigger mess, as nobody can decide if it is (i) light-toned red, (ii) analogous to Magenta or (iii) both.

My tip is that if you want to go a bit wacky with orange, try using dark violet or purple wash as a swadow for orange. I did this with my blood bowl team's wights armour and it worked surprisingly well because of the blue pigment in those colours.

16:38 excellent! My 300+ collection of paints is justified! ;o) I often have conversations with people who suggest large paint collections are wasted money; I always knew that there are some colours that just cannot be mixed from primaries, even if you use CYM instead of the more traditional RYB
@alfyb45124 жыл бұрын
Mikey R Of source you can mix them. It’s just a bit more difficult than most, especially if you don’t have access to single piment paints. That’s not to say there’s not a good reason to have 300+ pots (for one thing, why shouldn’t you?).
@Mikey__R4 жыл бұрын
Hi @@alfyb4512, that's almost true, but not quite. There are some single pigment colours that you cannot match by mixing two other pigments. You can get close, but not exact. I'm sure there's some science involved, and wavelengths and such like, but some bright oranges and really bright greens are beyond my mixing skills, even when I switch to CMYK.
@VinceVenturella4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we are limited by the pigments that the people are using (which of course have certain properties and impurities from the pure wavelength, so it can be very difficult to get some specific colors. I am obviously never going to judge for too many paints, paint is awesome. :)
@zakhoskins64044 жыл бұрын
That orange over a standard zenithal does zap the pop of the color, but man does it make a nice desaturated base for certain kinds of leather. I remember one time just playing around with my Warcolours by mixing Red 1 (which while technically red pushes as close to orange without being orange as you can) with Black at about a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio, and it made some very interesting brown colors that you just can't get straight from one of the droppers. They were dark yet warm at the same time. Good colors for certain monsters for sure. Looked like something you'd see on some of the more nuanced depictions of the Marvel villain Carnage when the artists weren't using only red and black to color him with just flat super saturated hues.
@VinceVenturella4 жыл бұрын
It's true, you can use the desaturated nature to your advantage, I just wanted to make sure I was clear as I think many people have a challenge with getting the bright warm orange, so I just wanted to make sure. :)

Hi there Vince, I have a question about painting amber. In relation to the AOS, Realmstone from Ghur, for my megaboss on foot. I wanted to show the bone shoulder pad like it was a piece of this realmstone. I have watched your tutorials on other stones and techniques, but have not found an answer or solution to paint this. In the end i used Seraphim sepia over zenithal highlighing. I would like to know how you would approach an amber on bone effect, as i am looking to improve this feature. If you have covered something like this in a Q & A video please let me know as i have not watched them all so far. Cheers, Nick Drew from Australia.
@VinceVenturella4 жыл бұрын
So that sort of thing is quite difficult, if you are talking about an amber gem, then you are talking about something like making it look like it's transparent. THe challenge here is going to be that we have a strong preconception of what a skull is, and we expect it to look like bone. So you are doing a very complex effect on something that has a strong pre-conception. If I were going to attempt it (and I am not sure I would to be honest), I would have to put something inside the amber, as though it had been trapped there and try to show that over top with glazes and make it look like it was underneath, probably with a reflection line as well.

Thanks Vince! My love for this series hasn't desaturated. :-) Just a thought to illustrate the fact that you need to use "orange pigments" to get a poppier orange, instead of mixing red and yellow: since the spectrum for orange is "thin" on the color wheel, it is harder to touch / be close to the "exterior border" of the wheel when mixing, because when you mix you actually move along the segment that joins the points where your starting colors are. Of course at this stage I'd need a drawing... but the triangle between "poppy orange", "poppy red" and "poppy yellow" is more pointy (because of the reduced perception of orange), thus making the orange point further away from the side that joins red and yellow.

Vince thank you so much for the extremely helpful video. I'm wondering if you'd be interested in exploring Triadic color schemes (or complementary, or analogous). I ask because I'm trying to paint a miniature army (necrons) with a triad of purple, orange, and green, and have been on a never-ending exploration of differing all the properties of each color, the matching and mixing, highlighting, etc. While I've strongly enjoyed how the fluorescent orange pops out, I've have struggled to make purple as a secondary and green as a tertiary color work. Wondering if you'd be interested in making a video showcasing how to paint (or warn us away from?) triadic color schemes. Thanks!
@blakeariusАй бұрын
I use them when oil painting. The best seem to be ones that focus towards the CMYK colour space, not that RGB can't work. It's one of those things you just have to play around with. But if you do want to go down that route, the Golden Solflat range seems to be a good choice, with Kimera doing similar things but being more inconsistent.
@Connor-g4eАй бұрын
@@blakearius To make sure I understand, when you suggest going the CMYK route, are you saying to try priming with white and adding CMYK colors to "subtract" down to the colors wanted? Essentially focusing on having more tint/white in the colors?
@blakeariusАй бұрын
@@Connor-g4e You don't have to prime with white. But it's easier to get vibrant reds/ yellows and oranges and other colours. White and black are always going to desaturate your colours so you have work around that when mixing. I'm not an expert on mixing I'm sure you'll find more practical stuff from regular painters on youtube. You just have to translate it to miniatures by using alot thinner paint.

Vince - Do you have any recommendations on acrylic painting resources that are not miniature related? Canvas acrylic painting tutorials have so far been the most helpful for me in getting better at miniature painting.

I don't have any specific channels I watch regularly, but there are many I watch, more for just incidental techniques or just entertainment.

do you consider vermillion an orange or a red?
@VinceVenturellaКүн бұрын
A red

@@VinceVenturella ive been working on it a lot and i find it that you can't treat it as a red nor an orange. its its own thing, like how teal/torquise are not cyan

Unrelated to the topic but when highlighting a mini should I stick to the same color for all highlights or change accordingly? Or just stay with warm/cold colors?
@VinceVenturella4 жыл бұрын
The answer is yes. :) - So there are actually multiple schools of thought around this. Many artists use a single highlight color (i.e. all Warm highlights with Ice Yellow or cold highlights with glacier blue. That's certainly valid. You can also use colors more unique to each color (like they could all be warm, but still in the color.). In the end, each tactic will produce a different feeling piece but there is no wrong way.

Vince should have said “we’re all used to seeing the colour orange in Rust when we see a Ford”.

Thanks for this video Vince, orange is my favorite color and I love using it in my armies! Any thoughts on how you might incorporate purple with orange?
@VinceVenturella4 жыл бұрын
I think it works very well with purple if you also incorporate some turquoise/teal. That triad works very nicely with Purple as the pop color.

hey vince, great video! i want to paint my lumineth army in orange and have a blue/green complimentary color, do you think could work and are there any colors you would recommend?
@VinceVenturella4 жыл бұрын
I think it would be killer, beyond that, you likely just want some neutral tones like creamy white and black.

this is fascinating, honestly you could have just done a whole video simply on how the bottle of war colours flourescent orange changed and reflected the ambient light from the other bottles of paint dear god lol transitions galore

That Warcolours Fluoro orange is wonderful.

I noted the lack of "Caucasian" when you were doing the giants skin with oils, guessing you got some feedback on it?! Love orange on figs.

Oy gevalt!
@VinceVenturella4 жыл бұрын
No, no feedback, I just always try to be aware. :) - It's easy for me (as a caucasian) to just make that the default "Skin" and make everything else the other, which is incorrect of course just in description, but sometimes those inner hueristics get you even when trying. :)

Wooo! Love these will you be doing more colour theory videos in the future or do you feel you've covered them enough already? I'm always looking at trying to learn more theory

Oh, there are always more, we aren't going to stop until we cover basically everything in a standard set of "hues" plus white and black.

When you talk about light and physics, orange and brown are more or less the same color. Brown is dark orange and orange is light brown. That is also why caucasian skin tones use orange, there is still some of the melanin that makes the brown African skin tone.
@VinceVenturella3 жыл бұрын
I'll have a video coming soon on brown. :)

Orange and Turquoise are the reason I moved to oils. There’s just nothing in our hobby paints that compares to the brightness, saturation and vibrancy of cadmium orange or cobalt turquoise.
